National Treasure

el toro calvo grande's picture

I speak of arts luvvie Brian Sewell. Been watching his Naked Pilgrim series on Sky Arts which has been both enlightening and entertaining, albeit with a rather disturbing image at the end as he lived up to the series title.

Also watching his series following the Grand Tour through Italy as well which is equally good.

Now I'd always thought of him as a somewhat pompous, inveterate snob (all of which appears to be true) but he clearly has a wry sense of humour, a twinkle in his eye and a thread of emotion that runs close to the surface, as with a number of us here.

He is also not afraid to speak his mind. His views on some of the architecture he comes across in both series are particularly robust. Anybody who is a fan of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Paris should avoid episode 1 of the Grand Tour.

Any other treasures that we should pay homage to?

I'm sorry to take it down a notch...

but I was just thinking about National Treasures, and after watching Genius with Dave Gorman a few weeks ago, I think you've got one in the shape of Noddy Holder. Don't ask me to explain, 'cos I can't.

Brian Sewell's rise to fame

I think Brian Sewell does know a lot about art, can be an informative and enthusiastic presenter and writer, and is quite a droll figure.

But, didn't he first come into the public eye when he defended his friend Anthony Blunt when he was exposed as a spy? I for one had never heard of Sewell before, but the media seemed to pick up on him as an endearing and eccentric figure during that episode, and his public career began to take off from it.

Dont know who he is

but as the Sacre Coeur is my favourite building in Paris I dont think I will be agreeing with him.

When did he stop being public enemy No. 1 and start being a national treasure?

And Richard Briers, but he has always been a NT.

Skuds | 10 November 2010 - 7:17pm

In my humble opinion....

.... I think Mark radcliffe is a national treasure.

Top man.

I love Mark Radcliffe. I had to accost him and shake his hand at the Word in Your Ear gig, for no better reason than that I love him and have loved him since I was a teenager. Unrequited.

Are...

...national treasures supposed to give one the fackin orn? Again, I love her, and have loved her since I (and she) was a teenager. We're almost exactly the same age, and for some reason that makes the flame of my Lauren Love burn brighter still.

Nigel Blackwell

Just one picked at random.............

One way system – smooth and commendable
Go by bus – they’re highly dependable
The swings in the park for the kids have won awards
The clean streets acknowledged in the Lords
But what’s a park if you can’t see a linnet?
A timetable if your journey’s infinite?
My bag’s packed and I’m leaving in a minute
For what is Chatteris without you in it?

Car crime’s low, the gun crime’s lower
The town hall band CD, it’s a grower
You never hear of folk getting knocked on the bonce
Although there was a drive-by shouting once
But there’s a brass band everywhere
And I don’t drive, so I don’t care
And as a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square
What’s Chatteris if you’re not there?

Like a game-bird reserve short on pheasants
Weavers’ cottages devoid of tenants
A market town that lacks quintessence
That’s Chatteris without your presence
Three good butchers, two fine chandlers
An indoor pool and a first class cake shop
Ofsted plaudits, envy of the Fens
Prick barriers at both ends
But what’s Chatteris if you’re not there?

Big Up For Mark Williams

Memo to whoever: Can we have more of him on tv please?
What about Rolf and Wogan or do you have to be "of the nation" to be a national treasure?

0
STD | 10 November 2010 - 8:40pm

Agreed on Mark Williams

But I think he now spends his time rolling around on a carpet of crisp fifties following his Harry Potter adventures.

I still think he owes us another series of On The Rails or Industrial Revelations.

Witty, erudite and courage beyond belief

2
Johnny Topaz | 10 November 2010 - 8:55pm

He gave us "Felicity"...

... so a NT by definition.

0
man.of.soup | 11 November 2010 - 1:46pm

Er...

James Kirk gave us Felicity. But for YCHYLF as a whole and everything since Edwyn is a definite NT. For what it's worth, I have met him and IMHO he's a top bloke too.

I nominate Jo Brand....

Saw her years ago in the "Old" Comedy Store and she called herself The Sea Monster then, and she was great. As time went by I didn't care for her much but in the past couple of years she has become brilliant again IMHO, especially with her NHS comedy show Getting On.

What makes a national treasure?

They need to be a recognizable character. Who have been ploughing their furrow for some time whether or not it has been fashionable. They need to be themselves at all times, possibly grumpy, preferably older, but that's not the be all and end all. Nigel Blackwood fits all of these categories. But Alan Bennett has seniority here.

ganglesprocket | 11 November 2010 - 12:38am
PaddyH | 11 November 2010 - 12:58am

Nah!

He's too young still , but will be there for sure in another 10 -15 years.

0
Helena Handcart | 11 November 2010 - 3:11pm

He's best mates with Thatcher

so the Dalek must seem like an ickle kitten in comparison. But he's also been presenting The Sky At Night for so long you suspect tv was only invented so they could show it:

Just don't let him bring his glockenspiel to the induction ceremony...
