Where:
Leamington Spa
Comments:
Nanci has a decent way with a tune, demonstrated to purposeful effect despite all kinds of issues for the punters - standing outside for 20 minutes in the subzero waiting to get in as credit card bookings were checked was one. Unreserved seating another, as was selling too many tickets so that there were dozens of standing patrons. For a crowd for whom the first flush of youth is but a fond memory in a fading album, this is unwise. Nanci was graceful, intelligent, witty inbetween songs and the band was in good shape for a first night of the tour. The set hung on too many old faves played too often - "Play some new!" - but being in her company is aways an old world delight. I'm sure she'd be handing out milk and cookies were she able. The contrast between her and some members of the audience was surprising, such as a couple of aesthetically challenged muppets behind us speculating that support act Edwina Hayes was a love goddess suppressing an urge to run off with them.
The Audience:
I neglected to bring a bucket with me so that the woman stood next to them could have held a tune in it, rather than bellowing tunelessly throughout Nanci's set. Then there was the cock with the St Georges flag he insisted on waving...
Food & Drink:
The FPO had a diet coke while I emitted what are known to friends as my "Fuck off and leave me alone" vibes to ensure we kept the two remaining seats in the house. Worked.
It Made Me Think...:
Too many venues in this country don't give a damn. I've seen dozens of Cowboy Junkies gigs in the US and in almost every case, the venue has been suitable, the people treated well and the evening successful. We just dont get it do we?
