johnsimpson1965's picture

Common story. Need more space for sprogs/office etc.

It`s taken me a while to get here but now I am I`m not that bothered. It`s hardly ever played and at least in years to come i`ll be able to re-discover it.

How did you feel when your`s went upstairs?

Don't worry ...

... in ten years you'll haul them all down again, and get a hard-on from the sound of the stylus biting into the dead wax, all over again.

I sold everything I had, about 4000 albums I'd collected over four decades, irreplacable stuff I thought I'd have entombed with me. Don't miss it at all. Surprised myself with that one.

My vinyl is still going. I

My vinyl is still going. I have doggedly hung on over the last 20 years. Have loads of cd's as well, but never play them at home - i use those for ipod and in the car. Vinyl simply sounds better, but also it makes you play at least one side. It makes you put some effort in to put it on the platter, and the sleeves are bigger and better. Spent a bit of money recently on my turntable set up and it sounds even better, and most things are now being released on vinyl.

I

buy more on vinyl than I do CD these days, especially with the increase in free downloads linked to your vinyl purchase. To pick two examples at near random from under my record player, the recent Mogwai and Titus Andronicus LPs are lovely artifacts with some great design that would be wasted on a CD sleeve, and totally pointless as a little square with a purchased download.

Around ten years

ago I had to clear a terraced house I had rented before meeting my wife and moving to Nottingham. I was 42 or so and thus had collected NME's, records, Wisdens, Rothmans' Yearbooks, and all the other ephemera one accumulates for decades.
I put it all in a storage unit in Blackburn and signed up to pay £50 a month or so direct debit or standing order.
When times got hard for us, that was one of the things that could no longer be paid for. when we moved back north to Preston, I couldn't even remember what the combination for the lock was even if I got in there!
I have no idea whether it's all been rifled through and disposed of or what happens but among the haul would be a complete collection of Rothmans, 1970-2002, Wisdens and Playfair Cricket Annuals for the same era, everything released by Bowie, The Velvets, Costello, Springsteen, Clash, Jam,Roxy, REM and dozens of other acts on vinyl during that period and a collection of Blackburn Rovers programmes and memorabilia which must have been worth a fortune.
Though I sometimes fantasize about winning the lottery and it all being still there as I pay my unpaid bill, I've never really had any incurable pain about losing any of it.
Guess the old adage about if you haven't worn it/read it/played it for two years bin it might not be as harsh as it sounds after all!

How did I feel?

Meh. That's how I felt.

I very occasionally miss flicking through them, but I prefer the fact that I can carry my entire music collection around on a box the size of a fag packet.

The turntable in the attic

but still have the vinyl in my room, for fetish reasons.

Vinyl albums in the room?

They're not for listening to - they're for reading.

Starting Over...Again!

I got rid of most of my vinyl, started this process by, as have many of us, replacing albums with cds and when I moved 6 years ago dumping hundreds of them on friends who really didn`t want them.
And now boy do I regret it, I decided to have my Linn turntable overhauled, replace the cartridge and now I`m buying all my old favourites all over again, when I can afford to. I doubt if I will ever possess as large a collection again (1,500), maybe small compared to others, but the sheer enjoyment of opening up a gatefold sleeve again and listening to what is a far superior aural experience to other formats is great.
I must admit having to get up every 20 minutes to change the album over takes some getting used to again!

For most vinyl re-visitors that probably coincides with,,,

the need for a pee.

Two problems solved at once!

Sold all of mine...

...along with some fairly expensive kit (Linn, Quad etc) about 3 years ago and haven't regretted it for a moment. I did, of course, digitise everything before ditching it, so i'm not missing any of the actual music (probably breaking several laws, there)

All done now...........

All done now...felt a bit "meh" as some have said but think i`m going to miss my singles most. That`s my childhood disappearing into cardboard boxes.

Hey ho. Tapes and videos next.
