Entertainment For Lively Minds
My quality night in with V+
(other PVRs are available)
Paxman interviews Christopher Hitchens (the E4 version would no doubt have been 'Paxo v Hitch')
Utterly captivating. The poignancy brought about by his illness served to add depth to what might otherwise have been an overly adversarial contest. Shame the continuity announcer introduced him as 'Peter Hitchens' but still...
The Trip (episode 5 - The Yorke Arms)
Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon's pseudo documentary gastro travels around the North of England. This series completely passed me by but I thought it was great. Seriously brilliant impressions throughout. Particularly loved their discussion of Abba's "The Winner Takes It All".
Mad Men
Last of the season. Multi-layered and generally fantastic as ever.
The Art of Germany
The excellent Andrew Graham-Dixon brought the subject vividly to life as always.
And they say there's nothing on 'these days'...

want more Hitchens?
Just watched the Paxman interview on iPlayer. Well worth a look. As someone who has recently had cancer I found his perspective interesting. Many views shared although he expresses them far more eloquently than I ever would. Until now.
Anyone interested in Hitchens, and I understand he's a love him or hate him kind of guy, may be interested to know that the BBC World Service are airing a debate between him and Tony Blair on Saturday evening. Both Labour party members and both supporters of the war in Iraq but with very different religious views, it could be an interesting debate.
World Service is fast replacing Radio 4 in my life, there's some interesting stuff on there but that's probably for another thread.
Thanks for that.
I'll look out for it.
It's on YouTube I think
in 9 parts, first one here:
9 into 1
and someone has taken the time to take the 9 parts on YouTube and paste them together as a single mp3

Coogan talking to his son was heartbreaking as well as the Abba/impression head to heads/dream sequences. the photography is amazing too.

yep agreed about world service. love to hear your selection from there.
big fan of The Strand when i'm awake overnight with radio 4 left on. i often dream of the world service.
a list of one
Not a complete list of World Service gems, being that it is only one thing, but last night whilst cooking a Pilaf rice that in all honesty was far to much for me to realistically consume they ran a fascinating documentary by John McCarthy on the evolution of kidnapping and the psychology behind negotiating a release.

So good my dinner got a little over done whilst I stood in the kitchen hearing it out. Good stuff.
And I ate ALL the rice.
