My night with Randy Newman

Steve Riddle's picture

Very pleasant surprise to encounter David Hepworth during the interval at Randy Newman's concert at the Sage Gateshead last night. I was aware he was there for an afternoon panel discussion on music journalism - which I sadly missed - but had assumed he'd have high-tailed it back to the Big Smoke by the evening. So, nice to chat to you David - a proper gent who tolerated my attempts at conversation with good humour. I'm so glad I resisted the temptation to open with "Excuse me, aren't you Mark Ellen?"

The concert itself was magnificent. One man and his piano filled Hall 1 of the Sage. My first time seeing Randy Newman, and I should confess that other than the well-known songs such as Short People, I knew him best as the man responsible for the songs in any number of Disney/Pixar films including the one in Toy Story 2 - When She Loved Me - which always reduces me to tears. It's thanks to the Word CD that I'd been introduced to his recent album Harps and Angels and got to grips with his combination of acerbic lyrics and toe-tapping music.

The man belted through songs old and new, pausing to take another run at a couple of the trickier intros to some of them and full of self-deprecating wit while doing so. Some very entertaining asides about the Toy Story films as well - they keep interrupting his songs with talking and crazy action sequences, apparently. Meanwhile I'm sat there thinking, all these years I thought Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear was written by Alan Price.

After a standing ovation, the encore consisted of a couple of songs (what, he wrote Feels Like Home as well?), another ovation and that's your lot. Excellent - leave 'em wanting more, but best of all, all done and dusted before 10pm.

Well all I can say is -

you lucky bastard!

I'm a Newman fan from way back - first discovered him when "Sail Away" came out in 1973.

I've seen him in concert a couple of times - the most recent was a long time ago in 1983 when he came to Australia and apparently got lost in the Capitol Theatre in Sydney and almost didn't make the encore. The tour lost money and no-one's been game to bring him back to this part of the world.

However I loved it when I took my kids to Toy Story etc and was able to tell them about the guy who wrote the songs...

Cherish your experience - it doesn't get much better!

Cherish

Ooh, I do.

As it happens "I'm a Newman fan from way back - first discovered him when "Sail Away" came out in 1973." is more or less what D.Hepworth said too.

My Minute with David Hepworth ......

I was there too and said a quick hello to Mr.H. in the interval, embarrassingly introducing myself with my nom de plume.
What a tit I am.
Agreed, it was a great show. It's breathtaking the way Newman can mix the rollicking footstompers, with the fragile spinetinglers.
And we were such a good audience, he said he wished he'd given it more than 79%.

Like ships in the night...

I too spotted Mr. H wandering around outside of Hall 2 of The Sage, iPhone (or other brand of mobile, maybe) clasped to his ear. I was just stood having a ponder at the top of the steps near Hall 2, and sipping on my bottle of water. I didn't feel able to approach him - he wasn't working and was rather enjoying a night out, so best just to leave him be. I was stuck, however, by his glorious mane...

Anyway, who was it I went to see? Ah, yes... Randy Newman. It was The Word that introduced Randy Newman to my ears, and after last night - I'm so glad they did.

Great tunes, fantastic lyrics - a great wit, too. Just a wonderful, wonderful evening.

Early doors

We're off to see him in Glasgow tonight and very much looking forward to it. Finished by 10pm? Bliss!

I'm going to see him in London on Wednesday...

it will be my first concert for 4 years. Hearing that he'll be finishing at a reasonable time just puts him even higher in my estimation, if that were possible...

if it hadn't been for

the vagaries of the Sage's unique car park bottleneck system, I'd have been able to get home, relieve the babysitters, and still catch most of the Westminster hour before drifting off to sleep.

What was the last one?

We should open a book on it. I'm guessing Roger Hodgson / Supertramp (natch!) or Orchestra Baobab.

I last saw Supertramp in 1986, so it wasn't them...

it was Radiohead at Hammersmith Odeon. I got so pissed off with the chattering audience that I listened to their set from behind some fire doors in pitch blackness.

"from behind some fire doors in pitch blackness ..."

I suspect that that is how Radiohead would prefer all their music is listened to!

There could be a massive gathering now

just to meet the enigma that is you sir!

So was that really

someone playing a trumpet in the balcony of the RFH during 'I'm Dead' or a vaery loud fancy ringtone?

DogFacedBoy | 20 May 2010 - 2:31am

The security people

obviously thought it was a real trumpet and were absolutley non plussed as to how to handle it!
