Intelligent Life On Planet Rock
My name is daveross and I'm addicted to The Word Blog...........
So it started like this. I was trawling the net for Del Amitri stuff, you know anything that might tell me I wasn't alone. It's tough sometimes when you think you're on your own. Then it happened I clicked on a line on Google and there it was Uncle Wheaty (wtf) and http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/del-amitri-now-there-was-a-band. I read the comments, mostly positive, it drew me in you know, they were saying what I wanted to hear, some guy called Mr Radio said "Loved Nothing Ever Happens", these guys knew what they were doing, they called to me, softened me up. Within days I was posting and I noticed a heavy Beatles vibe, you know kind of obsessive and I let loose on that Paul McCartney dude. I was on their territory and yet they let me dis their "man", pointed out where I was going wrong and still accepted me. OK it got a bit heavy but I knew I was amongst friends, I guess I was doing an hour a day by now but you just don't realise, it's like it's not happening to you, I never wanted this......sorry, sorry it's ok, I can carry on. I tried something new about this GaGa chick I knew http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/lady-gaga-you-know-you-want-to and suddenly I was getting a good response, 69 comments and now I was in a place they call "Hot Topics" and I don't remember too much after that, I guess I was doing up to 3 maybe 4 hours a day. Some guy called Bargepole took a heavy hit and got out, I hope he's ok. I just can't stay away, the kids don't recognise me and the wife, well she just can't take it no more. It's taken over, how do I get away? I need some help from the inside, LennyLaw seems ok, there's a real sweet guy called Patrick and Archie, poor Archie it just got too much for him he's in a better place now. Listen to me, get out while you can, take back your life, run, run, RUN, now the leader is setting experimentsfor us, they want your mind and £ 4.80 a month for their literature, once you've read that shit you're hooked. Listen, don't subscribe, PLEASE GOD I CAN'T SUBSCRIBE, help me, help me I need my life back, I can't give it up, what's happened to me, no, no, NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Good here ain't it? What brought you to this place we call Word?

I saw the first issue in WHS
and have felt at home here ever since. All the more so since the blog took its current open form (albeit slightly less so since it got whupped up with the ugly stick a few weeks ago - I'm getting used to it, like you get used to an unflattering new haircut on your partner).
Are you sure you don't want to tempt anyone with just wan, waffeer theen subscreeption, meester Dave?
Re: whupped up with the ugly stick
I like it now. I even quite like the orange.
Funny how time does that...
Yes, it's generally a good place.
I had been a subscriber for a while before I checked out the blog - I had tried the Mojo one and it was nowhere near as civil as this place generally is. I posted a link from there recently for its news content and a
There was a thread about bands only being as good as their drummer, swiftly followed by one about first singles - Senora Malo correctly said "That place is just perfect for you!".
I like the breadth of banter - music / drink / food / TV / stuff! It does feel like some kind of community of like-minded people. We don't all like the same music, but we share an enthusiasm about music, and often want to share that enthusiasm.
I have met one of the fellow bloggers, which was great fun, and will meet up someday with more (*waves to Mr Blast*).
But I can't be bothered when things get really argumentative. There's enough of that elsewhere in the world.
So I'll raise a glass of Bruichlladich and bid you all the best of cheer!
Dave.. be strong..
I'm lucky. I can do the odd bit of Word blog every day. It's no big thing, y'know if you know how to handle it.. you need to steer clear of the heavy shit; none of this extreme pedantry. All the posting of threads, though.. you need to be careful. One minute it's a Del Amitri song, the next it's Justin Currie's entire home video collection. It sucks you in. Don't listen to them bad dudes talking about Education and shit. Stick to the light stuff about Cornish Pasties and anything Dave Hepworth posts. He knows the score.
Hang in there, dude. We're with you.
Cuz,
it ain't no thing, right?
That Hepworth shit is da bomb
One hit and you in the game for good
Dave:
were we separated at birth?
Apart from your monumental McCartney-dissing aberration (which I have to say created a chasm between us for a while), we do seem to have quite a bit in common. In fact, I posted a comment on similar lines to you some months back, and our mutual appreciation of The Jam, the Del boys and, ahem, our (strictly musical of course) appreciation of A-ha also seem to be in harmony.
I know what you mean about the addictive nature of this site. I'm in serious danger of being found out at work. I have to say that 'update every other minute' threads like the Rob/FAQ/Archie/Middlerabbit epic are like crystal meth...
...er..
"ahem, our (strictly musical of course) appreciation of A-ha.."
I still feel guilty about my being naughty regarding that little episode.
Del Amitri
A great way to discover this forum where something always happens.
We will all pity the last one to know!
Sadly,
I fear this site will Be My Downfall...
Still,
with this post Dave, you look like you're on a Roll, To Me.
EDIT - near simultaneous thought alignment with Iain!
I Thank You!
That's why we're hooked to this nonsense!!!!
Of course...
...there will come a time when we have to kiss this thing goodbye.
At least
you're not trying to Currie favour...
There's a ....
...Justin case joke around here somewhere, but I'm not going to make it.
That's
Just as well...
Likewise, I'll have to
kiss this thing goodbye shortly because I'm spending unhealthy amounts of time here, and I've only been around for a few weeks. But it might as well be you lot rather than the drivel that passes for TV round our way.
In ancient times, hundreds of years before the dawn of history..
I seem to recall sending Mark Ellen an email proclaiming Led Zeppelin's Presence to be a great record. He sent me a reply in which he mentioned that 'Underrated albums' were being discussed on the Word website (the 'The' had yet to be affixed). I took a look. The site was in its infancy and not the world famous repository for erudition and bollocks it is now. But over the months I fell in love with it and I realized that I had a place where I could write all the tosh I liked and get away with it...
...it's Andrew Harrisons fault.
I posted a comment about the KLF / Bill Drummond article last year, and Andrew responded straight away. I was so impressed that a website was actually being used by the journos, and not just moderated to death like those awful BBC Have Your Say sites. I was hooked.
In no time I was admitting my love & respect for Will Young. Hmm.
the world famous repository for erudition and bollocks
heh heh heh. Tee shirt? Tag line?
"erudition and bollocks"
What a fabulous summing-up of everything this site is all about. Proud me to be a part of it. It makes me very happy on a daily basis.
"Look inside ...
....your head, daveross baby
is this somewhere that you feel you should be?
The right place, the wrong situation,
The right time, to Ro-oo-ooll to ..erm...this website."
Just say no
The Chicklets = The Word Staff
I have three kids...
...so this genuinely struck a chord. Thanks Beany, you may not have intenede to be thought provoking this earlu on a Saturday, but you were!
Now, back to the big question, which one of the Chicklets is Hepworth?
I was reading an Elvis Costello interview
in a shop. It said that an extended version was posted on the website. So instead of reading it for free in the shop, I read it for free on my computer.
http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/elvis-costello
I then wanted to post a Pink Floyd 68-72 playlist so I created my first blog.

It's just the game y'all

In times of need
its great to know you guys who've been through the same shit are there with me. Lenny, I've learnt not to hold a grudge, lifes too short. Dougie, as my name suggests I have a Scottish history, who knows where our genetic paths may have crossed? You two and the rest of the guys, you're the best, you know, really the best. I've managed to just do a half (an hour) today but it gets worse after dark. As for JC he's got me through some tough times in the past and he'll get me through this, poet, philosopher, agony aunt, friend.......
