My favourite TV music moment of the year so far

Dave Amitri's picture

has finally appeared on YouTube. It's from the recent "Songwriters Circle" series and encapsulates everything I love about Justin Currie, lyrically, vocally and musically. The effect it has on Chris Difford is incredible to watch, hope you enjoy it.

Justin Currie "If I Ever Loved You"

I like you Dave

I've never met a fellow Currie fan before.

And as you've nicked my fave TV moment, I guess I'll just have to post a fave Currie moment.

Wow...

A great song, beautifully sung. Man moved to tears. No costume changes, lasers, phone calls to presidents, inflatable cocks or robot armadillos needed. Simple is often the best way to go...

He's got a voice on him that chap, hasn't he?!

I've never bought anything by him or Del Amitri, but after watching that I might just have to (any advice Dave?!)

Where to start Patrick?

del Amitri were never better than on "Waking Hours" and " Change Everything" although there is a fantastic double album best of "Hatful of Rain" that contains all the hits and some of brilliant songs on a B-side 2nd disc "Lousy With Love".

Justins first album "What Is Love For" is my favourite thing he's done it includes "If I Ever Loved You" and is the saddest album I've ever heard but each song is beautifully written, crafted and performed.

You're right about it being sad

It's so powerful my wife can't listen to it - she says it's really good but the emotion is so raw it makes her feel terrible!
I get the same effect from reading Raymond Carver short stories - too many tales of broken, wasted lives and I feel like slitting my wrists...

You may remember Dave,

that I am another fan of all things Amitri, and I had Justin's album pre-ordered from the first day it was possible to do so. On the day it arrived it was slapped immediately into the CD changer for the drive home from work. Half way through the drive, I feared an accident, even dawdling along in the inside lane of the M4, as I was unable to see properly for the tears. The man is a genius with a sad song, an utter genius.

I'd definitely point a neophyte at Hatful Of Rain, as there are diamonds scattered all through the canon.

Are you on commission?

Just downloaded "What Is Love For".

Really enjoyed seeing Del Amitri at university in fresher's week and often listen to Hatful Of Rain so expect I'll like it, especially on the strength of that song.

Praise at last!

Justin is a songwriting genius and Del Amitri are one of the few bands, like Suede, where the extra tracks on the singles often bettered the singles, such is the depth of his ability.

Sleep Without Teardrops must be the greatest B-side ever

Emjoy...

Much as I will often take the piss out of Mr Ross..

What with the Justin Currie fixation and all that..

That clip is utter dynamite.

Thanks for posting it, Dave. Proper music. Proper, proper music.

Remarkable

no finer praise than to have a fellow songwriter moved to tears

I saw it on the Songwriters Circle programme and thought

fuck me, that's craft and heart. Resolved to look into this man's talent. Thanks for posting.

Hmmm

It just made me worry if Chris is OK. He seemed a bit fragile.

That was my thought

...exactly.
