My current earworm - but *is* it current?

Theo Zoffrok's picture

I keep hearing this song on the radio (mostly Radio 2) and in shops, at the local children's fun day. It sounded familiar - I now realise it's because I'd heard the Four Seasons version - but I'm still puzzled. Who are/were Timebox? Was it a Mark Ronson type pastiche? Why is it being played all the time on radio? Has it been re-released as a single? Anyway, I bloody love it!

For those at work or reading on an Iphone, it's Beggin' by Timebox.

Timebox

There's some more info here - looks like the album was re-released at the end of June.

It sounds great in headphones - the split stereo is drastic.

Madcon

did an updated cover version in 2007 without significantly changing the arrangement. I think they're black Norwegians. You're dead right: great song and Madcon's is like a forgotten slab of classic Motown (really!)

Whoops

Sorry, double post there, not a pathetic attempt to up my strike rate, honest!

Timebox later became Patto

In fact, apart from the geezer on the left, Chris Holmes, the other four are Patto - Ollie Halsall, Mike Patto himself, John Halsey and Clive Griffiths. Halsey and Halsall were also involved with the Rutles (to differing degrees).

I have to admit that I'd never heard this version until a few years ago, only coming across it after hearing the rather good Pilooski remix/re-edit of the Four Seasons original. Great tune, either way.

It's Barry Wom!

I thought he became a hairdresser (after spending a year in bed for tax reasons.)

Introducing...

...Please give a big warm hand to Britain's latest supergroup, TIMEBOX, featuring (from left to right in pic) Leeds' most celebrated punk-poet, Mr Alan Bennett on vox. From somewhere posh, flighty mockney vibraphonist Damon Albarn. Very tall percussionist and former James Bond star, Richard "Jaws" Kiel holds this new combo together, along with former Inspector Morse sidekick Kevin Whatley on bass (nice wig there, Kev!). Lastly, providing the sure-footed rhythm guitar licks that really get this combo smoking, we have some bloke that used to lecture for the Open University on telly in 1975. Rock On boys!

Ollie Halsall

The big three (Page, Beck and Clappo) get all the accolades, but Ollie had the best chops.

We are now

in Brian Matthews 60's territory. I heartedly agree with previous correspondance that Brian needs to be featured in a great music mag. Any suggestions?

Cherry Red

Bought this a few months back from RPM/Cherry Red and it is indeed a very good album.

Word review

I do believe I reviewed the Timebox anthology a few months ago in some publication or other!

This could have been a discussion of a recent pop hit

...but it's gone into a discussion of a hitfree 60s/early 70s combo instead. This is The Word.
