Must-watch TV

Handsome.P.Wonderful's picture

Mrs W and I have Sky television. Yesterday evening we struggled to find anything in the squillions of channels we get that we fancied watching. Can the Word massive recommend anything in the far-flung corners of the Electronic Programme Guide that it might be worth setting the Sky+ box for?

30 years ago, Roger Waters sang

"I've got 13 channels of shit on the TV to choose from".

These days, that would suggest that his Sky box has broken and he's only got Freeview.

13 channels seemed an OUTrageous number back then...

Survivors

Law & Order: UK
Burn Notice
Glee

and coming soon:
Mad Men
The Good Wife
24

Scroll through your EPG. Though there's not a lot on offer outside of the main terrestrial channels, BBC4, FX, Sky1 and the odd thing like Alibi or Sci-Fi throw up the occasional gem.

Hairy Bikers

I'm really enjoying the latest Hairy Bikers series, which is called something like Mum Knows Best. they gather family recipes and cook them with great joy.

I'm also enjoying Only Connect - a cryptic quiz show on Bbc4. Yesterday is a sky channel that is out near the Discovery Channel - that sector is usually interesting and I've been watching and stockpiling Simon Schama's History of Britain. Lastly Mythbusters (which I am sure was tipped by someone here) - 2 slightly mad scientists test to see if Coke really does rot a tooth / shine a penny / clean up blood etc.

Erm, that's it for me.

They're loveable lads, for sure...

...but every time the big one with the pointy beard calls someone "Dude" (and he does so every minute), a part of me dies.

Another vote for the Bikers

They are doing 'proper' coooking and despite the artifice of the fetes they set up, I think that the sharing of Mums' favourite recipes is a great thing - and is to be applauded. The crumpets they did in ep 01 looked *luverly*...

Sky Arts - Channel 256!

Check out this channel for loads of progs on everyone from Al Green, Led Zep to Johnny Cash and Elvis. If you like Neil Young, they seem to show Rust Never Sleeps all the time.

They also show Songbook and Classic Albums - both series worth investing in and they also show the superb In Treatment, which was really must see TV.

Also worth having a gander at the Bio channel which normally has interesting documentaries on everyone from Mick Jagger to the Rolling Stones.

MTV Two also comes up trumps, mainly with Zane Lowe's in-depth interviews with Macca, Morrissey, Ian Brown and Oasis

The Book Show

On Sky Arts worth ferreting out when it's back on.

Always interesting authors and a hell of a lot less pretentious than Newsnight Review was.

Yesterday

Simon Shama's History of Britain on Yesterday. Always interesting.

Star Trek Voyager on Virgin

The best Star Trek series since the original - intriguing, tightly-plotted scripts, interesting characters, plenty of shoot-outs. No aliens/robots trying to learn about being human, no boring inter-alien politics, no tedious romances, no families in space storylines.

The Sweeney on ITV4 still holds up.

not much

There isn't a great deal on at the moment. All of the things that were amazing have finished or have stopped mid-season.

When they resume:
Ugly Betty (if you haven't got into it yet - do, you'll be pleasantly surprised)
Flashforward (aka Lost but not as confusing)
Stargate Universe (aka Alien but with less aliens and more paranoia)

Always worth Sky+ing:
American Dad (like Family Guy but more consistently funny)
Spaced (has been popping up on Dave recently)
documentaries on the History channel NOT about the Nazis - all the others are great
Born Survivor (Bear Grylls is a genius / nutter - very gripping viewing)

When the second series starts...

True Blood should be worth watching, IMHO.

Can I recommend buying Radio

Can I recommend buying Radio Times? EPGs are a nightmare to navigate. RT has helped me find all sorts of programmes and is pretty comprehensive on digital channel. It's also quite useful in telling you when something is repeated during the week.

Here's what's rocking the eddie household:
Modern Family (sky 1, Thurs evenings, new episode this week)
How I Met Your Mother (e4, Thurs evenings)
TV Burp
Survivors (although the 1st episode of the new series was disappointing)
QI

Glee looks good and I'm looking forward to the new Higson/Whitehouse show starting this week. Oh, pretty much anything on BBC4 is worth your time.

... what he said re BBC4, specifically that Pepys

repeat from 2003

was fascinating-sadly not on iPlayer but worth catching if it reappears.

Being Human

Ace supernatural drama on BBC3. Though it's just started it's second series so might be a little incomprehensible. I'm sure they'll start it from the beginning again soon, this being the channel that repeats everything forever...

I'll second that

- Being Human always seems to get overlooked, as it's stuffed away on BBC3.

- I'd also recommend Brothers & Sisters starting tomorrow night on More 4. It's not a conventional 'man' watch, but any show that includes Sally Field, Rachel Griffiths, Rob Lowe and Matthew Rhys in its cast can't be all bad. Oh, it's got Calista Flockhart, too. Meh!

- Thumbs up for Glee

- I also enjoy Hustle, even though it's a load of hokum and has kind of jumped the shark.

- If you missed Wallander, go onto iPlayer and catch up quick.

- Have also heard good things about The Good Wife.

- Nurse Jackie on BBC2 is great.

- If you've never watched any episodes of Medium with Patricia Arquette, then give that a whirl - usually on Sci-Fi at some point. It's actually very inventive with its plots.

- Other things to look out for this year are the remake of The Prisoner - don't groan, it stars Ian McKellen and Jim Cavaziel - and the 'new Heroes' called Day One.
