Musicians Of The Massive Unite And Take Over?
Posted by Tippy Wooder on 14 October 2011 - 1:09pm.
So, there must be many of us in the Massive who have dabbled with the dark arts of songwriting, recording, being in bands, gigging etc etc...
How about a handy thread - let's say... this one - where the Massive reservoir that talent, allowing the rest of us to siphon off a glass or two?
I'm suggesting posting YouTube links to your "work".
You never know, perhaps Messrs Ellen and Hepworth and co may be sufficiently charmed to include, say, one Massive track per podcast or CD?
Worth a go? Apologies if this has been suggested / done before...

I'll be brave
and post something then!
Here's some prog jazz funk in 7/4 that I layed down man. http://soundcloud.com/thegps/the-gentleman-players-dakar
7/4 ..?!
I'm a meat-and-tatey pie man, myself - strictly 4/4 and see you at the end.
Funky.
I like the way it builds.
Supergroup
I thought you were going to suggest a Massive Supergroup drawn from the musicians in our ranks. That could be a unique selling point - subscribe to the Word and join a band. Play at mingles and cruises. Of course there might be a lot of competition for particular instruments, but I say pick them all.
I'll take the triangle please, if the Count Basie orchestra have not already claimed it.
One exists already :-)
We've been playing together for a little while, writing our own stuff, having lots of fun. Don't have anything to post quite yet but I will do soon. (I'm on ukulele and shared keyboards, btw)
The band is, no doubt, called The Clique?
:-)
Haha!
Excellent. (Actually we're named after another board thing... we're called The Karma Errors.)
Shared keyboards
I'm fascinated. Do you have the white notes and someone else the black ones? Or you have the bass side and someone else the treble? Or is it a Rick Wakemen double decker thing and one plays the top shelf, and the other the bottom? Or do you only have it every other week? Actually I imagine two of you pushing and shoving and trying to play it at the same time.
(go on - disappoint me and tell me that there are just 2 keyboards).
To steal a Joe R gag..
I wanted to play triangle in a reggae group. But I'm not very good. So they made me stand at the back and ting.
Bravo!
Have an up.
I am Alan McGee
In a way....
I have since joined this great band, Cousti, and I now play the mandolin (as mimed here by oor Alan).
Here's one of mine...
Private
The link shows 'private' but I went through to Youtube. Nice stuff.
Many
thanks.
Oh go on then
Something bluesy
And something prog folky
Nicely done!
Is that you on the red PRS/Yamaha style guitar, or the Tele?
Either way, some really nice old school blues lines there.
Cheers Mojo
It's me on the red one. It's a Washburn HB-50. Very rare!
http://www.rootsnroll.co.uk/page8aa.html
A Washburn!
Nice. I've got one of those. Not the same model as yours though. Here's a picture:
Yeah, alright then...
A writing/recording (and amateur video making!) partnership with a good friend. Nothing too serious; just doing it for creativity.
Me in the grey shirt, Dave in orange.
very good
indeed..really enjoyed that
That's a corker, is that, Dan.
Nicely done!
Nice
melody and singing. Thanks
Nice...
... good harmonies and nice rhythmic guitar.
Excellent
Just the sort of thing I would buy.
Shucks!
A very genuine thank you for your comments! One of the (many) reasons I visit this site is the learned opinions of the Massive, so this is very high praise indeed! I now feel approximately 10 feet tall.
Cheers!

In case for any reason you didn't have the odd six and half minutes spare to investigate some lyric-free prog-metal noodling, here's an even longer clip, wherein my friend James has his tea while talking over some rough mixes from the forthcoming Songs from The Blue House album in his shed. Warning; contains performances by some of Bellowhead, The High Llamas and The Wailing Jennys.
Here I am...
Well, I'm not quite ready to upload any of my original material (I'm too shy to inflict my singing on you lovely people). Instead, I've just uploaded a vid of myself playing one of my very favourite tunes. Be kind (it's a bit rough around the edges).
As I've mentioned above, I also play in a band with some of the other fine people on this board... hope to share something soon.
Nice Piano
Not to damn with faint praise nor nothing but that's a nice looking and sounding piano.
Thanks!
My piano and I have been together for twenty years. I'm very lucky to have it; a friend of my aunt's did a flit from the country (some sort of tax dodge) and so we got the piano for a pittance. Would never have been able to afford it otherwise. I love my piano.
I love mine too
It's not as nice as yours though. It's a B. Squire upright. 51 years old - same as me - and it was bought when my folks had to sell the baby grand to make room for me. It's not in good shape though as I've neglected it over the years in favour of the ease of digital with volume control!
I thought
that was damn good..post some original....
Very nice all round
Used to play Gershwin preludes many years ago, might dig them out again. You play really well, more please. Go on let's hear your own stuff!
What are those wonky white things on the piano?
They're called
'keys'. I believe.
If you look closely, there's some black ones as well.
No you twit
On the right by the globe. Look like art deco milk jugs.
They're
art deco milk jugs.....
blimey missus
that is a bit good. Looking forward to hearing the Karma Errors.
I will join in....
...I think some of the "massive" may have heard my stuff before but here goes

Just listening to Waltzing Along
Very nice.
Did this many years ago.
Hope the link works. If it does then I'm the one singing....if it doesn't...well...er...

And here's something a bit more
recent. Recorded at the famed Toerag. Filmed at the slightly less famed Llandaff Fields...

A little bit of my past
Korg DS-10
I'm a bit of a minor virtuoso in the small community of Korg DS-10 on the Nintendo DS. Or, at least, I was a couple of years ago. There are a few people that do cover tunes and put them up on Youtube using the very primitive Nintendo instrument. They're mainly Japanese and Americans. Anyway, have a video of me doing Smooth Criminal.
or Joan of Arc by OMD...
Go on then.
A handful, from RPM Challenges past.
Be Warned by bobtheidiot
Adultery by bobtheidiot
Birdwatching by bobtheidiot
Edited.
This belongs in the other thread, I guess.
mmm
Rather good, those - my 2 y.o. son was tempted away from his snack and has sat beside me to listen. His spoken review: "It's Good!". His unspoken review: "Better than tangerines and chocolate!". Can't say much better than that I think.
Any more where they came from?
Thanks, Stephen!
Oh, there's loads, but not much online. Might post a couple more later. Thanks very much!
Since you asked so nicely....
Black Wings by bobtheidiot
And You Are by bobtheidiot
Blood Ties by bobtheidiot
And this last one is about the only recording my much-missed old band, Idiot Bear, did which I'm almost completely happy with. We had a few songs which I loved, but never seemed to get the recording process right.
Future Song by bobtheidiot
Good, them
Really like them. Good stuff Bob.
Thanks, Twang!
You too. I was listening to your record only the other day, actually - Paul W reminded me how much I'd enjoyed it.
Cheers pal
Is you stuff available in CD form? At the next Mingle we must discuss recording a bit - terrific sound you've got there. I remember you saying you track guitars in a rehearsal studio? We can get down and dirty about mics. :-)
Spose it could be!
Not actually put a CD out since the last IB EP, which was in 2003. All online since.
The last thing I did, yeah, I just hired a room at a rehearsal space and did the guitars properly there: a Shure SM-7b close-miking at the front, and an SM57 about 3 feet behind the cabinet to pick up some ambience and a bit more bass. Of that lot up there ^ the electrics on "Adultery" and "And You Are" were recorded like that. Everything else was just done in my front room!
I enjoyed those
Good lyrics and interesting movements in the songs (the rhythm changes in 'Birdwatching', the stripped chorus in 'And You Are', the last section of 'Black Wings'...) Nicely varied too.
We talked about the RPM a few months ago, did you finish this year?
Thanks!
Sadly, this year I didn't do the RPM. First time in a while. What with one thing and another, it was too much.
It was my first go at it...
...and it was tough. I was ok for ideas, but finding enough time to do it all had me down to 4 hours sleep a night for the latter couple of weeks. I hardly picked up an instrument in March or April!
It's good...
... I remember you putting some music on here ages ago and I liked it.
Good tunes
interesting lyrics,..What's not to like ? very good indeed!
*Embarrassed but delighted face*
Thank you!
We've never got the hang of video.
bags of atmosphere
on this track.
Here's one
03 surfs up for the chemicals by user7229792
I like it
Good writing, and lots of nice references. The Amaj7 (is that right?) at the end of the chorus is an unexpected change and it works well.
Thanks
and yes..recorded it on an old 4 track at home..lots of fun...
Here's some
music I wrote in a dreadful Danny Dyer film. Got my PRS statement this week, with dvd royalties and itunes sales I've earned the grand total of 39p off this track.
Oh alright then
OMD meets 70s Dub anyone?
Almost Dub by Kids Indestructible
and from a verrry long time ago:
Nice Thread Idea
I like these, I'll have a flick through the clips above.
Here's two from me then. The first one is Life, Exaggerated from a record called The Anxiety Bomb which I spent most of 2009-2010 sporadically working on. It's guitar-based, most of my stuff had been up to that point. For the video I chopped together some borrowed footage:
Earlier this year I did the RPM Challenge (Bob mentioned it above, you have to write & record a whole album in the month of February). I'd just bought a midi-keyboard had a go at doing an electronic album. I'm quite pleased with the results, so this is The Reverse-Memory Hat (from Fox Shoots Man). It's about wishing you could forget things so that you could enjoy them anew. Again, the video is "borrowed footage". (Most of my other vids are of stuff I've filmed and I'm even in some of them, I promise that these are my only ones of famous people dancing!)
Both records are free downloads here: www.facebook.com/roghildrethmusic
Cheers!
visuals and that
I'm not the pretty one doing the singing ...
"...one Massive track per podcast or CD?"
Oh God, no. What toe-curling bloggy hubris.
correct
well said - totally agree.
Tsssk
.
one Massive track per podcast or CD?
one Massive track per podcast or CD?
Noooooo, dreadful idea
It will end in tears.
Did this back in February
We're a sort of tr*ph*p band, but we started adding bits of indie and stuff. For our second album I think we're going completely acoustic.
and I was also in this ambient/weirdfolk/drone/electronica ensemble, and we even got played on the Freak Zone (but not this track)
Wrote the music and played keyboards on this
"The Man With The Elephant Nose" by Bend
I'd like
to introduce a bit of amateurism to proceedings
Stroud To Selby by Toiras
it
nags and nags..should have added a vocal ,it could have, should have been rather good..loved it!
Ah
We knew our limits, hence no vocals! Ta for listening and being kind though :-)
This just in
Just did quick vocal and mix on this one which is a collaboration with El Hombre Malo on electric guitars! Boogie!
Never too late 151011 by Twangothan
rocks along merrily
As a guitarist, it is incumbent on me to ask, plaintively, "Can you bring my guitar up a bit, please" ?
LOL
Always happens when you're not at the mix!
Only jesting good to hear your having fun guys - well done.
Oasis' comeback single...
... in 2025 anyone?
New to this Soundcloud lark
Despite starting way back in 1976 I'm the world's slowest home studio recorder. A few weeks ago, after some good advice from Bob of this Massive (and indeed this very thread) I crossed the point of no return and bought an iMac. This necessitated abandoning my Sonar software that I'd spent 5 years struggling with, and buying Logic Pro. Due to lots of other stuff happening I haven't had much time to explore it, but I did record this which took me just under an hour from start to finish. I'd spent ages trying to get my drum kit to map properly and once I did I was delighted to discover that the range of kits available in Logic includes Classic Dub 1 and 2. You just bang on the kit and it comes out sounding like The Mad Professor. Awesome!
I can play several instruments but none of them well as I've never really put the work in. I don't write songs, but ocasionally come up with some instrumentals. This was completely improvised, with 2 drum tracks, bass guitar and a brand new midi keyboard, each track recorded in one take, and only once. I like the way it starts stepping at around 1:38 and about 10 seconds later I discover the pitch wheel on the keyboard. As it has no production beyond the Logic sounds I guess it's a work in progress, but I doubt I'll ever do any more with it
Beginner's Logic Dub by Vince Black
ah, never mind
some other time.
That's a shame.
Here's a couple of videos
The Beat Poets (me on the black guitar) - from a BBC Scotland show, fSd
and more recently
The Primevals - live at King Tuts (me on the white guitar. I'm very versatile)
I put up my instrumentals at : http://soundcloud.com/el-hombre-malo/
I'll have to delegate!
I wouldn't know how to begin to write a song but these are some of Pinmonkey Jnr's efforts. He's a happy lad really.
Goodnight Sweetheart
When I Die - Niall Ransome (Produced by Jamie Gray) by Jamie Gray Producer
Oooh if progeny are allowed...
...this is The Boy at the relaunch of his and his mates' website (www.zestforlifezine.com, thanks for asking).
it's a bit rough and ready and a bit sweary as well. No idea where he gets it from...
Be gentle with him...
My Name's Matt - Have Things Changed Since Ten Years Ago? (The ZFL Sessions) from Zest For Life on Vimeo.
I'm really pleased with this one
Possibly the most time I've spent on a single recording. Started life as another 3 minute song, but I wanted to take it somewhere else. I'd love to hear any responses to it.
Rog Hildreth - The Life Repeater by RogHildreth
not forgettting the Word Massive music project!
A couple of years ago The Massive collaborated on tracks, and we ended up with these (although there are a few missing now, since deleted from soundcloud)
The Word Magazine Massive
My last gig
Looked something like this. I'm on the right.
Us in Paris last year
Well, since you ask...
Here's my tribute to the finest thing Scotland has given to the rest of the planet. And I'm not talking about Karen Gillen's legs. No, it's the humble Tunnocks Tea Cake.

YTDS the band
With Nash The Slash - 2008
And my main project at the moment
This is rather frisky & silly
hence not representative of my normal stuff (which is thoughtful piano stuff).
But it seems to be going down well elsewhere, so I thought I'd post it here. A bloody silly song for anyone who's ever tried to juggle sex and the school run. Mercifully short.
heres a couple of mine...
this is the incredibly low budget video i made for "Supernova" a song by my band "driven like the snow...", i'm the singer and guitarist.
and here's me doing a solo cover of a cure song.
hope y'all dig it.
Late to the party...
...just back from Paris & Luton - looking forward to hearing more of these tomorrow, after I get a bit of real life stuff out of the way.
Here's a song of yesterday, which was a song of yesterdays when it was written and recorded 6 or 7 years ago.
Blues For A Green Earth from Colin Harper on Vimeo.
That's...
...just lovely Colin.
It could be an outtake from Bert's Avocet, or even something from Bert & John
Hmmm..
..that would sound nice with a little bluesy guitar....
Ha!
..very good, Shane! :-D
(Not very secret: I'm very much looking forward to recording something instrumental with the None-More-Bluesmerising Pacemaker in due course! Isn't the Word forum great for this kinda thing?!)
Go on then
Two recordings from my band, of the same song. First, the original version from around 2004:
Time's Up by Split the Kitty
Months later, minus a couple of the group, we did an alternative version at home for a bit of a laugh:
Time's Up acoustic by Split the Kitty
Another song written by Hannah
and sung by me.
Shallows of Love by Stick's Licks
that
is a superb song...good voice too!
Thanks Bingham!
Although I've *really* got to re-record the backing track, the quality's dreadful. But that's my fault entirely, not Stick's; I couldn't be happier with his singing!
Lovely song
You have a really beautiful voice.
Thanks toiras :)
Just wanted to do justice to a great song.
And a recent one from me, sung by me
Do excuse piss-poor piano solo in the middle. I'm not a bloody pianist.
Everything by Stick's Licks
*thinks*
Hey, I'm a bloody pianist! Give me a shout if you want a new piano solo, I'd be happy to create one...
Clifford T Ward!...
..surely.
success is showing up....late

Follow That Dream: we toured Norway (oh yeah) in cheap, rented vans for four or five years in the late eighties, released an album in 1989, sold 1400 copies and broke up.
