Musician for hire

Roger Manning is a hugely talented musician who I have followed from the days of Jellyfish. Alongside his seminal work with Jellyfish and all the 'sideman' work mentioned above, he has produced some great solo work that never got anywhere eg

and now he is having to actively say '...I'm for hire!...'

Similarly Jason Falkner doesn't seem to be able to get proper recognition. Don't get it- both really talented musicians but they can'y seem to connect with a wider audience or make a success of what they have.

Moog!

RJM Jr was 50% of the Moog Cookbook, how could he not mention that... a genuinely great record...

Pearls before swine..

With the lack of sales that Jellyfish generated, Mr Manning should've realised that, sometimes, life is a bit shit and the great players and writers don't get the rewards they deserve. The cognoscenti will continue to recognise him and his oevre but, sadly, the rest will not.

He must look at the Black-Eyed Peas and want to reach for the narcotics.

This news breaks my heart.

OK, Roger and Jason shouldn't be millionaires (not many musicians are, and it usually spoils them), conversely they're probably not starving. But of all the bands reforming - and we know why they usually are - Jellyfish deserve a payday. Here's one reason why:

And here's why I can't wait for Jason Falkner to come back to Britain:

Wait a minute, wait a minute

Why would this news break your heart? Why? He's putting food on the table by making music, being creative. What a fortunate position to be in. Isn't it fantastic that the internet can allow him to make a living like this working remotely with musicians, and even better, sympathetic musicians, from around the world. It possibly more pleasant than dealing with a record industry exec who doesn't know what to do with "that crazy band Jello-fish" that the old A&R guy left him.

I'm tempted to send him some of my old demos with some £50 notes to see what happens.

I was about to point out that Baby's Coming Back was a UK number one for McFly in 2007. But he didn't write that one. Oh well.

Ok, Ok...

'Breaks my heart' was a bit strong.
Nevertheless, I still feel less musical folks with money and contracts should be beating a path to Roger's door, rather than him having to tout his wares. It reminds me of driving past my old college a few years after I'd left to see a large printed tarpaulin outside reading: 'Courses still available in...' The friend I was with wondered why I was a little disappointed - I asked him if he'd be any different if his Alma Mater had a sign reading 'Degrees still available in many classical instruments, composition...' (he went to the Royasl College of Music).
