Music to watch Fireworks by

PaulDavis's picture

At this time of year I get roped in to provide some musical accompaniment to our local Scout's firework display. Using a fairly basic portable CD / i-pod combination plugged into an old pa system, I try an put together a suitable playlist for the assembled 10-16 year olds and their parents and friends.
However I'm getting bored of the usual stuff - The Launch by DJ Jean, 2001 Space Odyssey theme, Theme from Gladiator etc.
Has anyone got any suggestions for kid / family friendly music to accompany the display?

A Glass of Champagne by Sailor

Two years ago this was played at our town's firework display and it worked an absolute treat.

don't think they'll all fit in the scout hut

and you'll need a hell of a lot of bridge rolls for the hopt dogs....

strangest music I heard at Bonifre was at huge council charity fire a few years ago they played "you gorgeous" by baby Bird.

As for suggestions how about Kashmir?

John Williams

A greatest hits of John Williams was playing at a particularly good firework display I was at a while back; Star Wars, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Superman.

Worked for me anyway.

Staralfur

from Sigur Ros. 3.18.

Could be a tad too genteel for the, erm, celebrations that take place on the 5th of November, but it also reminds me that I have The Life Aqutic With Steve Zissou to watch. Woo!

Make a date with Kate

Hounds of Love will fulfil this role admirably. Even the song titles for "side one" have the right flavour: Running Up That Hill (from where the fireworks are often unleashed), Hounds of Love (the gunshot-like sounds, the frenetic atmosphere), The Big Sky (speaks for itself), Mother Stands For Comfort (coincides with the quiet bit before they fire up the monsters for the finale), and then Cloudbusting. Perfect.

Bonzo's intro strikes again

(and even he nicked it from someone else, didn't he?)

Catherine Wheels by Crowded House gets an honourable mention here?

Cheesey and obvious, so don't do it

I once went to a organised firework display in Perth. As I arrived the bonfire was crackling, the crowds were gathering, and some local commercial radio station was represented by a lorry/ cheap roadshow blasting out "Disco Inferno (Burn Baby Burn) by The Trammps.

The mighty Bellowhead

and Sloe Gin gives you plenty of rhythmic patterns to go at - you're bound to get the bangs right some of the time.

Watching that video

Has made me late for work. Wonderful. ANd John Boden has a beard too. Put him on the next cover.
