Music Binge
Do you ever go on a new music spree? In the space of this weekend, I downloaded:
Spoon: Ga Ga Ga
Epic 45: May Your Heart Be The Map
Battles: Mirrored
Tom Waits: Various
Panda Bear: Person Pitch
Burial: Untrue
Tegan & Sara: So Jealous
Maps: We Can Create
Tom York: An EP
Radiohead: The Webcast
Laura Veirs: Saltbreakers
Wilco: Sky Blue Sky
Arcade Fire & David Bowie
When will I ever listen to all of this? Why do I download more and keep looking for more when I haven't listened either at all or properly to all of this stuff?
I think it's because A: The internet plays up to my completist side, I now have every PJ Harvey album, I won't recognise half of it when it comes on the ipod but I sleep better at night knowing I have it all and B: I think that every album might just be the thing that blows me away and makes me feel like I did when I was 12 and Live Forever came on the Mark Radcliffe show when I was listening under the covers when I should have been in bed.
Does anyone relate to this, or is it just me?

I can agree with point 2
I continue to search for that 'perfect track'. I used to walk into record shops and feel depressed because I knew it was in there somewhere but I didn't know where.
So no, it's not just you!
The question is...
did you pay for all that then?
I too tend to get more music than I have time to properly listen to. It's nice to have options though...
did you pay for all that then?
Errr. Well...
the great unlistened
I too continue to buy music both as download or sometimes cds whilst not having listened to some or sometimes all of the music contained therein. Its a real shame, isn`t it? One day the great undiscovered track (or maybe even album) may present itself during a casual listen. Until it does I`ll keep on doing the same thing. I remember someone saying that you will probably never have the time in your life left to listen to all your music. But the fact that I have that music in my possession helps me rest easy at night.
The only stuff I download......
is exclusives of band websites or stuff not commercially available to purchase. I have this argument with a number of friends - with cds coming down in price significantly I still prefer to own the physical product and the price difference between buying it and downloading it is not that great. Many sites allow you to hear snippets of each track before purchasing and usually that is enough to enable a judgement to be made.I am sure there are numerous sites where you can download unusual stuff for free - I tried limewire and it kept crashing my computer plus the quality was not at all good.
Steve,
I steer well clear of limewire and suchlike for similar reasons. I have to say though that the £5 odd quid I spent on a rapidshare account was money well spent and my discovery of rapidshare and megaupload and their ilk has been a revalation this year. I've just bought a house and what spare cash I have, I'd rather spend on a gig than on a cd these days.
All I want a cd for anyway is to rip it on to my ipod. I have about 4 or 50o of the buggers so I don't feel I'm at the front of the que of those who are 'killing muisc'.
If I just stuck to what I could afford to buy, my musical taste would be quite narow. I wouldn't have Epic 45, Burial, Maps, Laura Veirs, etc. I do however think that a band like Epic 45 should have an 'honesty box' on their website so I could pay into it if I like the album.
I may not have paid for any of my Decemberists albums but I paid for a live ticket and will happily do so again.
Thanks for the tip
dude-1981.I hadnt heard of rapidshare but will definitely check it out. I was born in the wrong decade to be totally computer literate but am trying to get there. Good luck with the house!!
