Mumford and son

Steve Turner's picture

The Amazon page has 24 reviews of the Mumford and sons album. 23 of them are 5 star reviews and 1 is a 4 star review. I have never seen an album with such Universally acclaimed reviews. The preview on the site sounds great - anyone able to expand on that?

Unanimity is overrated

This particularly applies in the world of stars. They just fling them in the direction of anything they feel they should *approve* of. I heard it once, it seemed alright to me but I have't listened to it since. But given that it's on Spotify, why not go and listen to it and see what you think?

Stars

And this applies more than anywhere else in Amazon. The reviews, especially for new bands, are written almost entirely by people who are hardcore fans of the band in question. Personally, I'd give it a 3.5.

Mixed, but when they're good they're great

To me they are positioned as the UK's answer to The Felice Brothers (with a dash of Fleet Foxes), and their album is patchier than Felice's breakthrough second album. The main voice has a slightly earnest feel to it which grates at times. There are 5 really strong songs: Winter Winds, Roll Away The Stone, Little Lion Man, Awake My Soul and After The Storm. The others I can take or leave.

I'm glad I bought it for those 5 songs, especially Winter Winds which I adore.

Sorry, I am not much of a reviewer...

December

From what I've heard (and I'm not keen on that so I'm not going investigate further) there's a pretty big dose of The Decemberists in there too.

A colleague was playing their record in the shop where I work...

and it struck me (never having heard it before) that the singer at times sounds remarkably similar to Monster-era Michael Stipe.

Oooooh....

...and I just ordered it for the wife as she expressed an interest.

She described it as a 'beardy band' which was an expression that appealed even to me. Hirsute folk-tinged rock is always worth a spin...

Don't like 'em

well, a couple of the faster songs are ok. Mostly, though, I find the voices irritating and the sentiments of the songs universally preachy - the seem to be constantly telling me what to do.

You've gone and done it now

Likening them to Fleet Foxes won't help endear them to Steve, trust me.
