Mr Scruff

20/02/10
Where:
Koko, Camden Town, London, England
Comments:
If you don't know, this DJ is different to most. Rather than participating in a line-up of multiple DJs, all playing for an hour or two each, Mr Scruff books entire clubs for the whole evening - meaning he normally gets to play funk, soul, Motown and Reggae on the decks for about 6 hours. This naturally means that rather than going for the kill immediately, he gets to well and truly set the scene - playing a diverse range of the more relaxed tunes to welcome people in. In the last few hours, the inclusion of tracks from Fela Kuti and his own albums get a great reception. It’s a wonderful sight to have every single person in a venue such as Koko dancing. To pick out individual highlights seems to go against the emphasis of the evening, which was to provide quality soul music without pretensions. You can hear the entire 6 hour set here: http://bit.ly/aCuZlJ
The Audience:
The crowd are fantastic, very friendly and clearly buy in to the Mr Scruff experience. It's refreshing to see a relatively young crowd appreciate (and dance to) the likes of Curtis Mayfield and George Benson.
Food & Drink:
The best drinking experience was the Mr Scruff Tea Shop, a small merchandise stand by the bar that also sells his own brand of tea. All profits go to a local charity and it’s great to have a substitute to booze, especially when sobering up!
It Made Me Think...:
A DJ set doesn't have to be short and punchy. It can be progressive, set the scene and introduce a lot of people to some exceptional music.
