Mp3 file on The Word CD..

Gorbalsbhoy's picture

How can I access said file..I tried it in my car MP3 player,Itunes, opened it in windows explorer,no luck, any ideas people?
sorry to be a luddite :)

Nothing 'luddite' about it

I suspect there are many of us completely mystified by the concept of putting a hidden track on a cd that is so hidden that it can't be played. I understand it is to get people to buy the mag so why not e-mail a download link to subscribers so that we can all join in the jolly jape?

I am smiling as I type this but it is a miffed smile

Notcast

To add it in iTunes if you're using Windows, go to File -> Add File to Library, then click on your CD drive - you'll then see 'The Word Notcast' listed on the root of the CD.

MP3

Still not there Fraser...

I can't check this

Because I don't have access to a Windows machine at home, but it is there, honest. Depending on how you have your preferences set I guess it may behave differently to the way I've described, but this has worked for other readers with PCs.

Yep

That worked for me

More Mac smugness

When I put the CD in my Mac's CD player two icons appeared on the desktop: one for the CD and one for the MP3 file. Easy peasy...

Same here...

Couldn't have been simpler.

Me too!

Don't know if this applies in Windows but if there's a setting that automatically opens a CD in iTunes or Windows Media Player etc, disable it and then extract the file from the CD as you would with a data CD.

And me

Working.....sort of

Didn't work on the Vista Laptop upstairs but did work on the Windows 7 Laptop downstairs. Perhaps it's an OS problem or the altitude!

Running Vista here

and had no problem finding it or playing it, although I didn't use iTunes for any of the above.

Ditto here.

Ditto here.

Not sure what the issue is

Just use file manager and go to the appropriate drive. Don't treat it as music - treat it as a data file.

I admire your perseverance.

It takes a special kind of gritty peevishness to insist on using File Manager 12 years after its demise. Good for you! :)

Tried all suggestions

still not there...oh well

Gorbalsbhoy | 15 May 2011 - 3:01pm

Same with me

Can't access the file.

0
tiggerlion | 15 May 2011 - 3:15pm

Stupid me

I asked the same sort of question on the Home page here and Fraser kindly answered. I then found the said file in the Music library of iTunes ngther than in the podcasts where I was expectign it.

Hope this helps.

XP

I'm running XP, all works fine for me. As soon as I put the disc in my pc, it automatically opened Spotify to play it on. I can also find it as an mp3 via the drive in "My Computer".

I suspect this an iTunes thing, not a PC thing

if you're using iTunes...pop in the Word CD and as Fraser suggested above click 'Add File to Library' and browse the folders until you see the drive with the CD in it.
On my PC the disc comes up labelled 'Podcast'.

You should then see:

Make sure you have 'files of type' set to 'All files'

Click the file marked 'The Word Notcast' and click 'Open'

Now, iTunes will have imported the file into your library but you might find that it doesn't treat it like a normal Podcast, but just like any new music file. So if it doesn't show up in 'Podcasts' then just type a search term into iTunes (try 'Notcast' since thats probably unique to this instance)

All being well you should be greeted with the smiley faces of two ex Whistle Test presenters thus:

Thank you Doctor

for such a well laid out and plain speaking reply. I have followed your instructions to the letter and said grinning fizzogs are leering out at me from my itunes library. Now if you could just persuade everyone else involved in technology to be so helpful the world will be a better place.

Not notcast

If you want to move the Notcast from music into podcasts on iTunes:

- find the Notcast in your library
- right click
- select 'Choose info'
- click on the 'Options' tab
- click on the arrows to the right of where it says 'Music' next to 'Media kind'
- click on 'Podcast'
- click 'OK'

The Notcast will now reside happily in the same part of your iTunes library as all the other Wordcasts.

I did not know that

Always wondered how you persuade it to recognise a file as a podcast. I thought it used the genre field.

:)

Happy to have helped Dr.

I have an iTunes 'Smart Playlist' set up to show me only

those tracks added to my library in the last 24 hours - makes finding the latest imports SO easy.

0
stimpy | 15 May 2011 - 5:15pm

I forgot to check

and downloaded the tracks on to my itunes and not the notcast.
I put the CD in the recycling then remembered I needed to listen to the notcast, went to the recycling bag and found the CD again along with £1.20.
Double bonus.
