Movie stars and musical bars

So Scarlett Johansson is singing Tom Waits, heh? Why can't these actors stick to the day job? It's been proven that musicians, for the most part make crap thespians (yes, that's you Sting, and you Mr Bowie, and you Madge) and, by the same token the reverse is true. One-off novelty songs aside ('If" by Telly Savalas, 'Common People' William Shatner), who's going to really take Ms Johanson seriousy? Or Minnie Driver for that matter, and didn't Kate Winslet try out a mic for size a few years back? Stick to the red carpet, I say.

I have both CDs

by Ms Driver and, whilst [to use a hoary old rock n roll cliche] "unlikely to set the world on fire" I rather like them. Saw her in concert twice, supporting the Finn Brothers and solo. She can actually carry a tune, better than some so called "professional musicians"

I've not heard Scarlett's effort nor am I a Tom Waits fan so I can't judge it but from the reviews I've read so far, she seems to have escaped the critical mauling I was expecting.

Ms Driver

I remember reading that she made an appearance at a radio station to promote her first album. She left a box of her CDs behind for people to take for free. No one took one. I get the impression she was low in melody and the music was just too bland and boring to be enjoyable.

Minnie

I was under the impression Minnie Driver was signed up as a singer before her acting career took off. So really she's a singer who's trying to act..a la Bowie, Madonna or Sting, rather in reverse like Scarlett or Kylie.

Three negatives

Scores three negatives on the Purchase Twangometer - tribute album, actor singing, and David effing Bowie. Anyone remember "Absolute beginners"? That typewriter scene? Say no more.

Scarlett's effort

I've heard some of it and it really is an effort to listen through it. I don't know how she escaped a critical mauling. Surely the Great Escape. It is absolutely appalling. For starters, she can't sing. Even with all the technology in the world her voice still comes out sounding out of tune. Then she has put it all to a horrible 80's sounding synth based backing. Sounds like Tom Waits Karaoke (done by a really crap singer). I hope this is the end of her recording career.

Does anyone like Juliette Lewis and the Licks?

Thought not.
(Stop looking at the pictures, then!)
Milla Jovanovich sings as well as she acts.
Exactly!

Wonder also if...

.. Carla Bruni (model-turned-songstress) serenades her French President beau before bedtime?
