More Silliness, Please!
Posted by Mike_H on 14 June 2011 - 1:49pm.
As I think I've mentioned before, I like silly music. Here's some from Thurston Harris with featured vocalist Rufus Hunter. It's called "Purple Stew".
There was a brief trend, probably initiated by The Big Bopper with his "Purple People Eater" for silly songs featuring the word Purple in their titles. Also for songs featuring The Jungle.
Anyway. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

The original 1958 Purple People Eater song was written and recorded by Sheb Wooley.
Shortly after The Big Bopper recorded a different song called The Purple People Eater Meets The Witch Doctor, which was a novelty spoof on several then-current pop songs including, of course, The Purple People Eater.
Thank "Deity-If-Exists"
for pedants. We'd stumble around here bumping into the furnishings and spouting the most -outrageous- tosh if it wasn't for their steadying influence.
I mean that, in an entirely appreciative, though "You bastard, you knew something I didn't!", way by the way.
Sheb Wooley is a name I'm more familiar with than I currently know, if you get my drift.

Barry Cryer AKA H&DH* had a No.1 hit in Finland with 'Purple People Eater'

Now that is
verging on the painful. Perhaps it's the shrill recording quality.
Finally on YouTube!
I have this song as a single. A favourite track on Beanytapes in the 1980's. Barry Cryer connection too.

Here's Bill Oddie's version of "On Ilkla Moor Baht'at" in the style of Joe Cocker. It's been a while:
To be found in John Peel's record box, his specially selected 45's to be saved in the event of a fire.
I love silly songs too
That's verging on the peculiar
...in a very silly kind of way.
I like Michael Nesmith but I'm not familiar with most of his solo output, which is probably very remiss of me.
Is this silly enough for you?
