More '80s Not All Rubbish' stuff

Graham Johns's picture

This is very rare clip of The Big Heat singing Watch Me Catch Fire on OGWT in 1984. Written by Elvis Costello in his ridiculously fecund mid-80s period, it was, as Brother Kershaw says, a big airplay hit , but came out just before the Bradford stadium fire and was immediately dropped from all playlists thereafter. It's a great piece of blue-eyed soul & I think it's safe to say it's unavailable anywhere else but here. Enjoy.

It's a belting record...

My external hard drive is called "Big Heat" in its honour - and because it's big...

I remember buying the record when it came out on 7". I've got an MP3 of it if anybody wants it - let me know.

Big Heat

I went to see them the week before this was due for release (at Dingwalls, maybe?) and it was a mesmerising show. I had it as a 12" but that's long gone. I've been looking for ages for a replacement copy and I even spoke to Bill Hurley trying to track a copy down and he didn't have any so I was pretty surprised and very delighted to see it turn up on You Tube earlier this year. So Stephen, if you have a MP3, I'd love one!

Here you go:

Click on this link, then click on "free user".

You'll perhaps have to wait for 30 secs or so, then it'll come down.

(Wonder if we're allowed to do this...?)

You're a god amongst men

I've been trying to get this in one format or other for 20 years. Thank you.

Can I show my ignorance

and say I never heard that track before today. Or the band.

I was more of a Graham Parker fan. And Sandy McLelland.

Ignorance

is nothing to be scared of... (Unless, on an 80s theme, you die of it.)

Sandy McLelland & The Backline!

I'd forgotten all about him (them?). Thanks Beany. He did the best version of Can We Still Be Friends? Pardon my cheek but you wouldn't have an mp3 of that, would you?

Er...

Not yet (winks). When I find the LP I have I will have to commit it to MP3. I also have a promo copy of tracks not commercially available. As far as I am aware he never made it onto CD.

I also like what he did to Like A Hurricane.

I'm not a stalker but I did a search on t'interweb to find out what he was doing. I knew he did backing vocals with Tears For Fears in the past but now he is doing film soundtracks.
