Miranda Hart and Jon Holmes, evenings on Radio 2 - NOT Radcliffe and Maconie

Ricardo's picture

With a gaping hole in my midweek evening radio entertainment due to Mark and Stuart relocating to Radio 6, I thought I'd give their replacements Hart and Holmes a go. I know it's early days, but I suspect I won't be a regular listener

What was great about Radcliffe and Maconie was their obvious love and knowledge of music, plus their sharp warm wit. For 2 stand-ups, Hart and Holmes are less than chucklesome as radio broadcasters. Miranda Hart doesn't seem to have much knowledge about music (but that's OK, because neither do Radio 2 jocks like Graham Norton and Paul O'Grady, right?) Jon Holmes has slightly better taste in the records he plays, but has the most annoying smug IRONIC voice which makes him sound like everything he says is in inverted commas, and is a difficult person to warm to

Someone at Radio 2 obviously thought throwing a successful sitcom star and a Radio 6 DJ/comedian together would be the perfect radio show dreamteam to replace Radcliffe and Maconie. Maybe it looked better on paper

yes...

sorry for the typo - was recently re-reading both Pies And Predjudice and Heavens Knows I'm Miserable now, so obviously The Other One was still in my thoughts

Wish people like her would stick

to what they're good at. I love her TV show but this is awful. Plus, I like listening to R & M in the evening. I really don't like what's happened to Radio 2. 6 Music is too much like 'Radio Music Industry' for my liking. Too cool for school.

and don't forget after this...

...we've got Jo Whiley to endure ..amazing , fab , brilliant . Once again Radio 2 screw it up .

Not for much longer

It's a temporary arrangment - just this week - until Jo Wiley starts on Monday. Heard last night purely for the Stephen Fry interview but wasn't overly impressed with the rest. 9 year old daughter flicked to 6Music tonight before I could say anything. She's been brought up properly!

and whist awaiting Janice Long's decent R2 show to come on

...Bob Harris has just played Layla by Derek And The Dominoes, followed by Zep's Stairway To Heaven on his A-Z OF AOR show. Because none of us have heard those songs anywhere near enough, right? Oh dear. Apart from Mike Harding's folk show, I think me and Radio 2 will be avoiding each other from now on

There was some blurring of the lines

between 6 Music and R2. I presume in order to justify the existence of 6Music, R2 is shifting back toward 'The Organist Entertains' and it's more traditional role as the station for toe-tapping AOR/MOR and Personality Jocks, and shifting it's 'serious music' content onto BBC 6 Music.

2 Hard

Holmes is generally okay on his own 6 music show, but last night felt like they were both trying too hard. Apart from presenters such as Simon Mayo, Bob Harris and Johnnie Walker, I don't like the way 2 is going either. It's 6 Music, Five Live or Radio 4 for me these days.

I don't get it

at all. Not one bit.

Why is Miranda Hart held in such high esteem. Her acting is uniformly awful, her comic timing is terrible. Now they want her to be a DJ.

Try and improve what you are supposed to be good at I would suggest. I do hope this is a fad that passes very soon.

I listened very very briefly

last night and it was like listening to hospital radio. Hopeless.

Jo Wiley it seems..

..probably beginning with an " amazing fab brilliant " live set from the likes of Scouting With Girls, or one of their Landfill Indie ilk
