Mingle CDs on Spotify

Mike_H's picture

I now have a small heap of CDs compiled by various of The Massive for the recent Thames Valley and London mingles. Thank you one and all.

It occurred to me that Spotify playlists from them could be of interest to those who haven't got copies, if the original compilers didn't object.

Plain text versions could also be made available for the perusal of the non-Spotified.

Any interest / objections?

Mally Page (artist not found)
Ivor Cutler (not this song)
They Might Be Giants (not this song)
Little Hands Of Concrete etc. (artist not found)

|Oops

sorry Mike, 'Little Hands Of Concrete' is a pseudonym that Elvis C used on the King Of America album. I used that name so it wouldn't look like I was obsessed with Costello - a foolish thing!

The Paul n George is from The 'Romanian Angel Appeal' LP.
Norah's cover is from a boot collection of Bsides and unreleased bits called 'Stay With Me'

Is the EC song actually the fab

London's Brilliant Parade? Might that explain why it's not turning up in the search?

0
STD | 19 June 2011 - 4:45pm

Nope 'London's Brilliant'

is one of the tracks he wrote for Wendy James' 'Now Ain't the Time For Your Tears' LP

Elvis' version was on on '13 Steps Lead Down' CD single

0
DogFacedBoy | 19 June 2011 - 5:32pm

Ooh that's me taught!

My real blunder, of course, was an implication that you could have made an error in posting your playlist DFB (and ta for posting it).
Never heard that one before. Nice homage...

0
STD | 19 June 2011 - 6:26pm

oh must add that the Mally Page track

comes from a brilliant box set called 'Girl Group Sounds Lost & Found' which is stuffed full of great girl singles.

"The Friday the 13th Thames Valley Massive Mingle Memorial Rotten Records Club Part II"

http://open.spotify.com/user/m1khar/playlist/45kWWuxgfPlf2gzQgFdkmm

Missing from this one are:

Kate Bush (song not found)
Pink Floyd (not found - along with almost their entire catalogue)
White Stripes (not this short version, anyway)
Bill Bailey (artist not found - didn't think he would be)
Elvis Costello (not this song)

"The Big Light" from "King Of America" has now been added to the "There and Back Again" list.

0
Mike_H | 19 June 2011 - 2:19pm

Yeah

La Bush n Floyd are unreleased, White Stripes is from London Forum 2001 FM tape. 'The Psycho song' was a B side.

Nice work Mike

Thanks!

...but wot about "Desert Island Discs"?

Could do it from mine if you're busy.

Bob's Desert Island Discs on Spotify

http://open.spotify.com/user/m1khar/playlist/5FQwgS5KoAUufHFQIfajpJ

1) Allegri: Misere Mei, Deus - Choir of Keble College, Cambridge
2) Reckless Life - Guns 'n' Roses
3) Just Like Heaven - The Cure
4) Mouth For War - Pantera
5) Fretless - R.E.M.
6) River Euphrates - Pixies
7) Spank Thru (live Rome) - Nirvana
8) Elgar: Cello Concerto in E minor Op.85 - 1. Adagio, moderato - Royal Philharmonic Orchestra / Maria Kliegel soloist
9) How Can You Be Sure - Radiohead
10) Pills - Bo Diddley
11) BBoy Breakdown (You Got the Job Mix) - Steinski
12) Snookered - Dan Deacon
13) Constructive Summer - The Hold Steady
14) Hang With Me - Robyn

All present on Spotify but as no performing artists were given for Allegri's "Misere Mei, Deus" I've chosen a recording by The Choir of Keble College Cambridge.
Likewise, no performing artists were given for the Elgar Cello Concerto movement, so I chose the RPO with Maria Kliegel as cello soloist.

Mike_H | 30 June 2011 - 11:54pm

Thanks, Mike!

I'd forgotten about that.

That is the right version of the Elgar. I'd wanted to put the du Pré one on, but couldn't find the CD. The version of the Allegri is actually The Sixteen conducted by Harry Christophers, but I'm sure yours is lovely too!

0
Bob | 1 July 2011 - 8:13am

The Sixteen - Allegri

That's the version I have at home. Sadly not available on Spotify.

0
Mike_H | 2 July 2011 - 9:26pm

Cryin For The Queen

Never heard of it or Little Jackie prior to taking my copy home.

One of the best things I've heard this year.

The Sound Is In You

The 1998 album by The Grip Weeds.

That's all mine was, in all it's 19 track magnificence.

0
Beezer | 19 June 2011 - 10:57pm

That album gets

four and a half stars on Allmusic.

Obviously HJHM - influenced (in their name and somewhat in their music, nearly all original), the early Who and Byrds are heavily referenced in a very good way. They use a mellotron, though sparingly, and I think I heard a sitar there at one point too. Backwards guitars, phasing effects. Far Out and Yes Indeed!!

I like it a -lot-, so thanks.

It's available on Spotify. Just put "artist:grip weeds" into the search wotsit and click on the album link for "The Sound Is In You" and away ye go.

Mike_H | 20 June 2011 - 5:05pm

Great, pleased you liked it

I'd recommend absolutely everything else by them. 'The Sound...' is the strongest album but each of the others has more than a few wonderful examples of the genre.

They're tight. Check that drummer.

And you're right, they are very much HJH influenced. They take their name from Lennon's character in 'How I Won the War', Private Gripweed.

0
Beezer | 20 June 2011 - 9:36pm

I got the Lennon connection

as soon as I saw the band's name. "How I Won The War" is an old favourite which I saw in the Watford Odeon when it first came out.

That, "The Bed-Sitting Room", "O Lucky Man" and "I'll Never Forget Whatsisname" are among the weird old movies in my personal favourites.
Along with "The Loved One" and "Harold and Maude".

Getting back to the matter in hand, there are some lovely, lovely "Beatle Chords" used in some of that album's songs.

I highly commend it to The Massive. My best new discovery in ages.

1
Mike_H | 20 June 2011 - 11:06pm

*pleased face*

Quite obviously you don't me to tell you that their catalogue is on Spotify and iTunes.

Favourite tracks of mine not on 'The Sound...' are:

Embraces
Haunted
Changed
She Surrounds Me
Strange Change Machine
Out of Today
Salad Days

All thrillingly good.

Whose CD is This One?

A "recession-sized" CD entitled "Friday 13th: Bad Luck & Trouble Is Your Middle Name". Uncredited.

http://open.spotify.com/user/m1khar/playlist/0WuVJLW7peDMHkzARi0fjb

1) Pickin' the Blues (intro) - Grinderswitch
2) Devil In Her Heart - HJHMs
3) Wall Of Death - Richard & Linda Thompson
4) From the Devil Himself - Viva Voce
5) Murder In My Mind - Holly Golightly & the Brokeoffs
6) I'd Rather Be Burned As a Witch - Eartha Kitt
7) Supreme Evil - E.L.O. vs. Diana Ross & the Supremes vs. Michael Jackson
8) Maniacal Laughter - ?

5 tracks available on Spotify.

Only the first well-known 21 seconds of track 1 are on the CD, but the rest of it's good too so I've put the entire thing on the playlist. No HJHMs product on Spotify yet, so track 2 is missing.
Track 7 appears to be some sort of mashup, so that won't be available there either. The Maniacal laughter of track 8 is everywhere except in Spotify's offices, where some sort of a profit needs to be made and pretty soon. Hence the increasing restrictions on "Spotify Free", pop fans.
