Mind the gap

Cobweb Steve's picture

I've just been listening to The Damned's 'Machine Gun Etiquette' on Spotify. Off kicks 'Love Song' and as it nears the end I sit grinning expectantly at my computer waiting for the 'GO!' that brilliantly seperates/joins it from/to the title track. Instead I get Arthur Smith telling me about British Gas.

Understand me - I'm not complaining (free music? Yes please!) but it got me thinking about those little moments in between tracks that add so much. The 'Thankyou!' at the beginning of 'Don't Believe a Word' on Live and Dangerous is another that springs to mind (I've heard that the album was practically re-recorded in the studio but hey - who cares?).

I was wondering if other readers, etc, etc...

Machine Gun Etiquette

is possibly my favourite album of that era, love it, not a duffer on it. There are quite a few of those moments between songs on that album, the sound of a female walking along, ending with a sound of mild shock on, presumably, meeting someone, springs to mind.

It took me AGES

to work out what the chap was saying at the end of the album. I'm now convinced that it's 'nibbled to death by an okapi'.

Live and Dangerous

As I understand it the amount of re-recording of Live & Dangerous is nowhere near as much as the albums producer, Tony Visconti, makes out. Apart from fixing the odd 'bum note' most of the re-recording was on the backing vocals. The album 'Still Dangerous' released last year and recorded in the same era as L&D has no re-recording / overdubs and sounds just as good - apart from the backing vocals which don't exactly contribute much to the Lizzy sound!
It would appear that Mr Visconti likes to perpetuate the myth to prove what a clever producer he is and take credit for the great sound on the album.

I know I said

'who cares' about how live the recording really is but I must admit I feel better for hearing your version. Cheers!
