Mildly refreshed? What tune do you turn to?
Returning home on the tube a couple of nights ago, after an entertaining evening with some old mates and having imbibed several alcoholic beverages, I wrestled my ipod from the bottom of my bag.
Having untangled my rather splendid Bose in-ear 'phones and located the pesky replacement buds that always seem to fall off when you need them most, I located the tune that always seems to be on default in my head when mildly refreshed and wacked it up to 11.
Said tune is 'Metal Mickey' by Suede.
I then spent the next thirty minutes or so of my journey blissing out to this glorious slice of preening alternative rock. I must have played it ten times consecutively.
Updating my itunes library the other day I noticed that 'Metal Mickey' is poised at number 1 in the top 25 most played list, some way ahead of second placed 'Whose Authority' by Nada Surf.
My point after all this prevaricating is that my brain always seems to tune into Metal Mickey after a few beers. Does anyone else have a tune that seems to be in default in their brain when they've had a few?

I don't know about mildly refreshed...
but when I was absolutely obliterated I always used to play Wings Greatest. My poor flatmate Dave had the patience of a saint.
Country Girl by Primal Scream
*sticks out tongue*
Great for air mandolin on the tube whilst 3 sheets to the wind
Especially the bit
where he howls 'when you - got the riot city blues'.
It helps that it's all about being in a right old state
I'm impressed
that your inebriated favourite and your most played are one and the same.
I have a "take me home"
playlist on my phone especially for the last train/bus slightly refreshed revere . goes like this
Wilco - California Stars
Bettye Swann – Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye
John Cale – All My Friends (John Cale's Version)
Elbow – Running To Stand Still
The Byrds – She Don't Care About Time (single version)
Groove Armada – Come Back Home
Richard Hawley – I'm on Nights
Rodd Stewart – Tomorrow Is A Long Time
Bryan Ferry – Carrickfergus
Damien Jurado – Everything Trying
Efterklang – Modern Drift
Dolly Parton – My Blue Tears
The End
I recall a fun evening years ago when my friend and I put on The Doors 'The End' whilst in a state of advanced inebriation and sang along/shouted along to the whole thing. All together now -'He took a face from the ancient gallery and he...he walked on down the hall'. That's the great thing about rock music. You can see and mock it's preposterousness and absurdity whilst thoroughly enjoying it, all at the same time. I wouldn't really recommend this track when alone though. The Pixies 'Monkey Gone To Heaven' is good - you can really shout it out - 'and God is seven and God is seven! 'I suppose I am thinking being a bit more than mildly refreshed and being at home rather than en route. Hendrix 'All Along The Watchtower' would be my choice for a milder state whilst in transit.
this.
every time.
In My Cups..
It has to be Such a Night by Doctor John every time.
Led Zeppelin
- Rock and Roll,
or if I'm really pissed, Foghat - Slowride.
Blame guitar hero.
Mawkish, Sentimental, Bombastic...
...but then so am I when the wine's been drunk, the malt has been poured and the headphones are on in the early hours.
Which means that the song on repeat when I finally wake up at 4am, slumped in my chair with a thin line of drool leading from my mouth to my shoulder, is inevitably...
"Heart as Big as Liverpool" by The Mighty Wah!
I know it's really bad when I start singing along, headphones still in place, in the early hours...and Mrs W appears in the den doorway with that look on her face...that's when the spare room beckons...
usually...
I don't have a favourite song per se, but if I've consumed a few beverages, I tend to head for Nat King Cole, Julie London, or The Prodigy. Go figure.
Drunk Island disks
Still think this is a funny essay, see Robert Crampton's piece at http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/men/article6937491.ece
The usual
tends to be The Bends but just lately I've noticed a predilection for Saxophone Collossus by Sonny Rollins and I'm buggered if I know why the sudden change of direction.
Bottle or two of red and
it's The YCAGWYW hitmakers, with 'Loving Cup'
I concur
A vatful of red wine and then it's Exile On Main Street all the way home with a bang of the head and an air guitar.
I know I'm not allowed U2 round these parts
but Angel Of Harlem is one I like to belt out when under the influence.
Or, you can't beat a bit of Elvis - oldies like Hound Dog, Teddy Bear or if at the maudlin stage of drunk, Just can't Help Believing and In The Ghetto
In preparation
for a night of achieving refreshment I tend towards The Pogues and especially 'Hells Ditch' - the whole album - it takes a while to prepare myself these days. On returning from said expedition I do like a good blast of Lynyrd Skynyrd - most likely the live album 'One From The Road'.
My typing skills have diminished, or emusic has got quicker, just downloaded new Wire album whilst posting this
Usually Ian McGeachie features at some point
All from his(and mine come to think of it...) handsome phase. "Solid Air", "Bless the Weather", "Grace and Danger" etc
Neil Diamond
obviously.
Sweet Caroline with the added brass sections.
Jimmy Reed
He's got that fabulous sloppy drunk feel. Got to be on vinyl.
Swordfishtrombones is also a late night favourite when I've been getting fu' and unco happy.
Oooh
Consideration by Reef
Stay by Bernard Butler
Sugar Kane by Sonic Youth
or stuff by Hole since my drunken yodelling sounds not unlike the vocal stylings of Ms Love
It's pretty much
always All Around the World by Oasis
"All AROUND the WOO UHHH RRRLLLDDDD
You gotta SPREAD the WURRRRRRRHHHHD
TELL 'EM WHAT YOU HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRDD
IT's GONNA BE OK
My version goes on even longer than the album version.
It's usually
Shack for me.
Comedy or Undecided.
shocking duplication
OK so scanning through people's lists, when I saw the heading three things popped into my head:
1) Most things by Suede, particularly Heroine, Another No-one and Metal Mickey - what are the odds?
2) The Bends (particularly that song)
3) Okkervil River, the stand ins.
4) anything by Ryan Adams
There must be something scientific going on here then about 1) and 2).
