Midnight Tango

plumb1909's picture

I've just purchased tickets for Vincent Simone & Flavia Cacace's Midnight Tango tour in late may.
I already own a couple of Gotan Project's albums, but do any of the massive know of any other decent tango related discs, that Mrs P and I can play to get us in the mood...

Look no further than...

... Astor Piazzolla, who did for the tango what "The Sound Of Music" did for hills.

He released dozens of albums in his lifetime (hundreds if you include compilations), but to an extent you can't go wrong with any "Best of" you can find as an entry point... and you may already be aware of his music by accident, as it was used to soundtrack Terry Gilliam's movie "12 Monkeys".

crikey..

just looked on spotify and he's done more albums than the grateful dead!
many thanks for that - always loved the music on 12 monkeys and never realised who it was.

"Zero Hour" is the best entry point for Astor Piazzolla.

It's one of his last albums, and he'd finally perfected the "nuevo tango" he'd been playing for several decades. Any of the albums from that later period are great, another one is "The Rough Dancer and the Cyclical Night". Here's one of his most beautiful compositions "Milonga del Angel"

The 'house' band...

...for Midnight Tango are Tango Siempre. They're a UK band but who play in the post-Piazzolla idiom. To really get set for the show, give them a whirl, they are on Spotify.

Next month we're going to see the show in London for my birthday. Really looking forward to it!

Tango Siempre : Nocturno

been playing this one on spotify, which is really good and then decided to purchase, but infuriatingly it looks discontinued and is a small fortune on amazon.
many thanks though, Gavin for the information.

Well, we went to the show and...

...it was brilliant! I've posted a review in the Nights In section. They are about to embark on a nationwide tour - http://www.midnighttango.co.uk/ - catch it if you can, if only for the amazing Tango Siempre.

Peggy Lee's Tango off Mirrors is magnificent.

written and produced by Lieber and Stoller. Not on YouTube, sadly.
