Micky Jones 1946-2010

Allan Heron's picture

I don't know if it's been shared on here but Micky Jones, guitarist extraordinaire with Man died peacefully yesterday.

He had to retire from the road a few years ago as a result of a brain tumour and had spent the past couple of years in a nursing home.

Until his retirment Micky was the only continuing member of Man from their formation in 1968 when they changed their name from The Bystanders when Deke Leonard joined.

A truly inspirational guitarist (and whose absence from lists of the good and the great has long been a mystery)and blessed with a wonderful soulful voice, he will be missed by his family and many friends.

It's often said you shouldn't meet your heroes - Micky was a giant exception to that rule.

Saddened

I am genuinely saddened, though I knew Micky was ill. He was indeed a fabulously inventive guitarist, and funnily enough this catches me mid- a big rediscovery of Man. Those who don't know them have a listen to this and bask in the great solo from Micky at 3.08.

RIP Micky why is it always the good ones?

Genuinely saddened

Absolutely right, Twang - always the good ones. Micky gave me so many great nights in the 70's. I've been rediscovering my collection of Man albums just recently and they never cease to bring a smile to my face. Long, meandering solos, always tuneful and, as Deke and Martin said recently 'never played the same thing twice.' I shall raise a glass to Micky tonight.
So many tracks to choose from but this version of Bananas will do nicely. Micky establishes his credentials at 2'45"
God bless you son.
Good day to you.

RIP

Sorry to hear of the passing of Micky Jones. Man + offshoots were regulars at the Torrington pub in North London in the 1970s. Many a happy Sunday night was spent listening to them. The Man tracks on Greasy Truckers made a big impression on me (and their extended songs probably go someway to explain my liking of the Grateful Dead). Currently listening to the Keep On Crinting anthology to remind myself of a great band and what a great guitarist Micky Jones was.

Forget Ziggy. Mickey really played guitar...

Short and sweet clip from the Oswaldtwistle Test

An inspirational guitarist...

...literally, in my case - Micky was the reason that I learned guitar (and my excuse for the sad fact that I still can't play a decent solo without a Bigsby to hand...).

Rest in Peace, Micky.

A bit of a late post

... but very sad news. I had the pleasure of playing in a band with Micky for a couple of years in the late 80's - a truly great guitar player and a lovely man
