All this news coverage

Does anyone else have an inexplicable urge to go buy some stationery?

0
Rob Pook | 7 July 2009 - 5:14pm

It's...

not going too well, is it?

Nothing happening, and Gambo sounds like he's underwater. Hey, that's an idea.

I smell car crash...

0
Captain Underpants | 7 July 2009 - 5:17pm

Heeere's Mariah!

She's doing that annoying "wavy hand to control my voice volume" thing.
I predict a lot of this near-histrionic stuff tonight!

0
Grant | 7 July 2009 - 5:42pm

It's not that she can't sing

It's just that she shouldn't.

0
Captain Underpants | 8 July 2009 - 8:38am

It's all about her

never the song

0
spinoza013 | 8 July 2009 - 8:40am

Very...

well put.

0
Patrick Crowther | 8 July 2009 - 8:46am

Is it true...

...that the 12 year old from "Britain's Got Talent" has been flown over to perform? I heard that Jacko saw him on YouTube and was blown away.

Given incidents in his past that strikes me as just a little inappropriate. Am I growing cynical in my late youth?

0
Paul Hewston | 7 July 2009 - 5:49pm

I should probably know this

but why are there five brothers in the front row? Did they have a spare?

0
Captain Underpants | 7 July 2009 - 5:58pm

It's

Randy.

0
Mikhail | 7 July 2009 - 11:31pm

new

We were wondering the same.Does anybody keep expecting the man himself to pop up behind the screen and do his moonwalk?

0
paintyface | 7 July 2009 - 6:05pm

If only

Richard Dimbleby were still with us.

0
Tim McGuire | 7 July 2009 - 6:06pm

I'm not watching it

following it on this thread is enough for me

It was probably the best way to watch Glasto too

0
Sheev | 7 July 2009 - 6:08pm

Lionel Richie - excellent gospel song.

Berry Gordy - great speech.
Stevie Wonder - fantastic, alone at the piano.

0
dannyboy3000 | 7 July 2009 - 6:17pm

Stevie Wonder's grandad

is singing now, Sheev.

0
Captain Underpants | 7 July 2009 - 6:12pm

from Eamon

Forde's twitter feed "Spotted: Elton John trying to hastily write tribute and only coming up with 'Crocodile Rock With You'"

0
Sheev | 7 July 2009 - 6:18pm

We're Still Branding

would sum up the cash side of stuff.

0
dannyboy3000 | 7 July 2009 - 6:25pm

"Don't let your son go..."

- that's enough Sheev thanks

0
Sheev | 7 July 2009 - 6:29pm

And it seems to me

That you lived your life
Like a candle with no wick
Even though your face had melted
And you got loads of stick...

0
Adman | 7 July 2009 - 7:42pm

Magic Johnson

Can finding out that Michael Jackson ate Kentucky Fried Chicken really have been the greatest moment of his life?

0
Paul Hewston | 7 July 2009 - 6:20pm

new

It looks like Magic has been making a few chicken drumsticks dissapear himself

0
paintyface | 7 July 2009 - 6:37pm

What with this

and the live coverage of the Plinth goings on - I'm practically dizzy with excitement

0
Sheev | 7 July 2009 - 6:27pm

Forgive me

but I'm having much better fun watching Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads on G.O.L.D.

"24hrs from Peebles.." brilliant.

0
billyous | 7 July 2009 - 6:30pm

The best ever programme on British TV ever

as I think I've said before

0
Sheev | 7 July 2009 - 6:32pm

No argument

from me, sheevster.

0
billyous | 7 July 2009 - 6:35pm

"Political hockum

and irreligious revivalism" from Al Sharpton, according to Gambo.

"He got a few facts wrong but what does that matter?" Ouch.

0
Captain Underpants | 7 July 2009 - 6:33pm

This little lad from

This little lad from Britain's Got Talent can play a bit of gui... oh.. wait.. no..

0
Rob Pook | 7 July 2009 - 6:35pm

John Mayer

he was in Buzzcocks, you know.

0
Captain Underpants | 7 July 2009 - 6:37pm

And

The Cribs.

0
Edleaf | 7 July 2009 - 6:39pm

How does Brooke Shields know him, Paul?

"They were seen together."

Great commentary.

0
Rob Pook | 7 July 2009 - 6:39pm

Brooke Shields...

...is ageing well. Jacko should have taken the name of her surgeon.

0
Paul Hewston | 7 July 2009 - 6:40pm

"I was 13 when we met..."

hmmm.

0
Captain Underpants | 7 July 2009 - 6:41pm

it's ok

she isn't his type.

0
inky miss | 7 July 2009 - 6:43pm

Great Quote

"Here's Brooke Shields. We've no idea what she's going to do".Thanks Gambo.

0
Grant | 7 July 2009 - 6:42pm

She's going to give a speech

She's going to give a speech of unintentionally hilarious one-liners..

0
Rob Pook | 7 July 2009 - 6:44pm

wrong gender

.

0
billyous | 7 July 2009 - 6:43pm

Has he

gone yet?

0
eddie g | 7 July 2009 - 6:44pm

What a quotation..

"And to his children - Prince, Paris, Blanket...."! Priceless.

0
Paul Hewston | 7 July 2009 - 6:47pm

thanks for that Paul

The sky plus box acting up and couldn't rewind. I spluttered and wondered 'Did she just say Blanket?'

0
ivan | 7 July 2009 - 6:48pm

Blanket

no really, Blanket.

0
inky miss | 7 July 2009 - 6:52pm

I heard Clay Davis might put in for an adoption

and rename him/her (?) "Sheeeet"

0
Hooters | 7 July 2009 - 8:08pm

Wait a minute..

Did Trevor Nelson and Gambo just settle a bet live on air?

0
Rob Pook | 7 July 2009 - 6:47pm

As a licence payer...

...oh bollocks what's the point? I've given up on the BBC. What is the point of showing some US entertainers memorial service on British national tv?

Cut to Lord Reith's grave showing signs of movement....

0
Lee Rimmer | 7 July 2009 - 6:54pm

Sorry but

I quite like it. Jermaine singing Charlie Chaplin's Smile was very moving, as was Brooke Sheilds' speech.

0
dannyboy3000 | 7 July 2009 - 6:57pm

Yes I agree with that

0
Uncle Wheaty | 7 July 2009 - 6:59pm

...seriously?!

Let's just all watch British TV and listen to British music and only care about British events...

0
TIAL | 7 July 2009 - 7:00pm

Yeah, sod the rest of the world eh?

????

0
Uncle Wheaty | 7 July 2009 - 7:04pm

Yes, seriously.

Leave the blanket coverage memorial services to national treasures. If you really want to watch it, get the DVD that will be out next week.

0
Lee Rimmer | 7 July 2009 - 7:52pm

But this memorial service

But this memorial service had -some- blanket coverage..

0
Rob Pook | 7 July 2009 - 7:59pm

Boom

and, indeed, tish.

0
Lee Rimmer | 7 July 2009 - 8:11pm

Don't you think people might want to watch it?

OK he's not a British national treasure, but the audience is there to ensure a massive ratings winner.

Or should it be taken off the screens because *you* don't want to watch it? ;)

0
TIAL | 7 July 2009 - 8:21pm

Well apart from the fact that it was on BBC2 and Channel 5

at the same time (and no doubt other channels carried coverage) so the BBC's coverage was hardly necessary, my point is that memorial services of pop stars have not been covered on BBC tv before and I don't see why they should start now. And the BBC probably should have a bias to reflecting British life so if they were going to start a trend on pop stars memorial services, start with a British one. My take? Don't start at all. I believe I am able to have an opinion on this (albeit a personal one).

And it was a self important, publicity seeking product promoting load of old bollocks. But I'm fine with the licence fee being used for this if you enjoyed it.

0
Lee Rimmer | 7 July 2009 - 8:44pm

Of course you're entitled to your opinion.

Mine is probably a bit simpler: Arguably the most famous person in the world dies. People want to see the funeral. TV stations show it. Regardless of whether other stations are or not it's still a massive ratings winner.

People would complain in droves if there was no available coverage. That's not a risk worth taking just for the dubious belief that it should be a Brit who 'starts the trend'.

And I didn't particularly enjoy it as such, I just thought it was a big event that was worth watching. It was hideously over-blown and didn't focus on his influence on dance music.

0
TIAL | 7 July 2009 - 8:57pm

Less overblown than

I thought it would be. The Motown stars, Brooke Sheilds and Jermaine gave it some surprising gravitas.

0
dannyboy3000 | 7 July 2009 - 9:00pm

True

I suppose it was the bit at the end that got me. They shouldn't have put his kids on stage.

0
TIAL | 7 July 2009 - 9:08pm

True.

School assembly and rock and roll don't really mix.

0
dannyboy3000 | 7 July 2009 - 9:10pm

A first

"Brooke Shields" and "gravitas" in the same sentence. Props.

0
Archie Valparaiso | 7 July 2009 - 11:09pm

Some imbibement had been taken

at the time. By *ahem* myself, not Brooke I should add.

0
dannyboy3000 | 8 July 2009 - 7:59pm

His influence on dance music

For God's sake don't open that can of worms again!

Apparently he had none - Albert Edward (aka Flappy Mong) proved it.

0
nigelthebald | 7 July 2009 - 9:10pm

Haha, OK

He had a heavy influence on my love of dance music. ;)

0
TIAL | 7 July 2009 - 9:18pm

BBC and massive ratings winners

Not convinced chasing massive ratings winners fulfils the public service broadcaster remit. And it wasn't a funeral. That will be the next slab of media coverage.

Sorry to sound a little off on it. The bit that did it for me was the poor daughter saying something about her dad and the family making sure that the mike was positioned to pick it up. The whole conceit of the event is that one person is worth this much coverage.

0
Lee Rimmer | 7 July 2009 - 10:11pm

We both agree that was a bit off, then.

But I think that the BBC are just trying to meet demand and provide the majority of the public with what they want. For every person who complains there was coverage of the 'event', there would have probably been 10 complaining if there wasn't.

Regardless of the content, they are going to show what is wanted, especially with the current instability in license fee payers. :D

0
TIAL | 8 July 2009 - 12:30am

and I'm deliberately ignoring

the massive (but young) elephant in the room that all of the coverage is also ignoring.

0
Lee Rimmer | 7 July 2009 - 8:45pm

An obscenity

he's a complete and utter irrelevance and it should not have commandeered the blanket coverage that it did. It's ALL about ratings. If paint drying got the viewers, they'd show it.

0
billyous | 7 July 2009 - 9:09pm

Just wait

til they make the film of Joe Whiley's autobiography!

0
dannyboy3000 | 7 July 2009 - 9:11pm

Isn't paint drying basically

Nick Knowles in a nutshell (is that good alliteration?)

0
Lee Rimmer | 7 July 2009 - 9:12pm

'Blanket' coverage,

I like it.

0
eddie g | 8 July 2009 - 6:30am

Did u miss

Danny La Rue's funeral simulcast on ABC\Fox and NBC with an extra sweary version on HBO? Babs Windsor's song was great

0
DogFacedBoy | 7 July 2009 - 7:09pm

For another scabrous POV

Go to www.wwtdd.com from an unconvinced American..
11:36am - Why are the Jackson brothers all dressed alike? Just once it would be nice if this family did something that wasn't completely fuckin weird and creepy.

0
Grant | 7 July 2009 - 6:58pm

Is it finished yet?

Can we get on with our lives now?

Anyway I think the most apt song if a bit obvious would be 'Crazy man Michael'

0
Steve Turner | 7 July 2009 - 6:58pm

Thnks for that.

I have a playlist to compile.

0
skirky | 8 July 2009 - 6:06am

What is it with Americans and having 3-4 generations with identical names?

0
Uncle Wheaty | 7 July 2009 - 6:58pm

The promised land

clearly had a lot of pies

0
Sheev | 7 July 2009 - 7:01pm

Are you watching now then?

0
Uncle Wheaty | 7 July 2009 - 7:02pm

yes

I've been drawn inexorably into its event horizon

Who is this dreadful woman?

Again - from Forde twitter - she looks like the mother-in-law in a sitcom that didn't make it beyond the pilot

0
Sheev | 7 July 2009 - 7:07pm

Double

post.

0
TIAL | 7 July 2009 - 7:00pm

Oi ! BBC ! We're missing The Culture Show !

And of course until they show it then it won't be on iPlayer either.

0
Doods | 7 July 2009 - 7:05pm

D'Oh !

Wrong day...I'll get me coat.

0
Doods | 7 July 2009 - 7:32pm

Point of Order

Does the US Senate have the power to elect someone as a 'World Idol'?

0
Captain Underpants | 7 July 2009 - 7:08pm

Seeing as he was known for

amazing dance tracks someone should do an uptempo number. Would it be so inappropriate?

0
dannyboy3000 | 7 July 2009 - 7:14pm

Exactly

None of this is representative of Michael Jackson's best stuff (in my opinion).

What they need is a good knees-up. :D

0
TIAL | 7 July 2009 - 7:16pm
spinoza013 | 7 July 2009 - 7:56pm

at least not a petition for biatification...

0

Hardly appropriate?

Maybe he got enough?

The Smokey man's still got grace

and style.

Is that the talent show kid?

0
DogFacedBoy | 7 July 2009 - 7:20pm

Smokey's in the room

and they get the karaoke kid to sing his song.

"A proud moment for Wales" says Trevor.

0
Captain Underpants | 7 July 2009 - 7:22pm

Oh please oh please oh please

Let Jarvis be there for this.

I think I just spotted Ray Cooper...

Paul Gambacini

you are an absolute arse of the first rank

0
Sheev | 7 July 2009 - 7:34pm

0
Sheev | 7 July 2009 - 7:41pm

'Gambo: that was her public debut....' oh, do fuck off.

0

His son ( f*ck knows his name )

0
spinoza013 | 7 July 2009 - 7:59pm

Will the TV channels

be given over to similar memorial services for Gary Glitter and Jonathan King, one wonders

0

The girl is MINE!!!!!

0
tkdmart | 7 July 2009 - 10:28pm

do you think...

the DVD will have a coffin cam option ? Maybe the blu ray will have the option to blow up John Mayer?
Just a thought!

0
Steve Cadman | 8 July 2009 - 6:29am

How has he sold

millions of records? And why is he Rachel's boyfriend? :(

0
dannyboy3000 | 8 July 2009 - 8:00pm

I would sincerely like to hope that Jackson's children...

will grow up to be happy, healthy and well-balanced individuals. But somehow the fact that their family saw no problem in allowing them to air their grief in front of a crowd of 17,000 people in a Basketball arena makes me think that the chances of that happening are slim.

0
Patrick Crowther | 8 July 2009 - 8:59am

A healthy diet of prescription drugs...

...should iron out any trauma or neuroses...sorted.

0
spinoza013 | 8 July 2009 - 8:59am

I heard Paris Jackson on the car radio...

...I found it very touching and had to stop myself from blubbing. Poor thing.
