Michael Stipe watching R.E.M. tribute band Stipe on 'The One Show'

A great TV moment, even if somewhat brief... I think he was gobsmacked by how good they were... the singer had him down to a tee!

indeed

Saw it, a great moment, but would the Michael Stipe who used to sell records ever turn up on a show where he had to talk with some old dear who made him smell flowers and discuss butterflies?

That gardener

I've been moved to comment about her before in these pages.

I still think she's enacting some hideous masterplan.

it was the look of abject horror on his face

as Gyles Brandreth prattled along that left me feeling deeply unsettled. I know you gotta do things to try and sell the last of the Twickenham tickets, but this is too much...

Oh come on!

Stipe's always done some UK TV - chatshows (Frank Skinner - all the very British not too funny carry on he got up to) and the like. You can't expect him to know quite what was going to happen on this show. He seemed to be finding much of it quite amusing as far as I could tell. Robert Plant's been on 'The One Show'. It's no big deal really.

Fair enough

If Percy was on it then that's good enough for me

Pat Carty | 26 August 2008 - 7:54pm

Well

I don't mean it's a cool show 'cos he was on it, if that's what you are getting at - or is that just a straight out non-ironic comment, in which case apologies, it's not always easy to tell. I just mean other practitioners of fine music and other good people also appear there sometimes, it's not some horrendous all time low, desperate act.

Sven | 26 August 2008 - 8:03pm

no Sven - you're missing my point

i've no problem with Stipe appearing on the One show; frankly I'd be happy to fight him to the death to get within the shadow of the lovely ms Blakely...

er...bloody court orders...

anyhoo - my point wasn't so much disgust that he was on the show really - it was that *nobody* should be subjected to having Giles Brandreth unleashed upon them. Even if the upside is the eye-candy totty (hey Eddie G!!!) on your right! I only caught a few minutes of the Brandreth going on about philantropy and instead of addressing the hosts, he seemed to turn to Stipe to involve him in the conversation, telling him that he simply *loved* his records...

Hey, look, it was entertaining telly, and i reckon the license payers got good value for money!

ivan | 26 August 2008 - 9:08pm

OK then

I see. Sorry to miss the point. Yes well I sympathise with anyone who has to spend time in the company of that buffoon. It seemed like the thread was going in the direction of why would Stipe humiliate himself and be so desperate etc. A similar response occurred when Plant was on that show.

Sven | 26 August 2008 - 9:16pm

the only snobbery i do

is 'inverse snobbery'. I'd be the one getting the hump if i got wind of Stipe turning *down* the chance to appear!

ivan | 26 August 2008 - 9:28pm

Well

it certainly was a highly amusing and bizzare juxtaposition of american rock star and typical 'eccentric' UK TV types.

Sven | 26 August 2008 - 10:11pm

Spooky

I thought I was dreaming, or eaten some bad cheese.

Stipey & Tuffers together, during a feature on interesting motorways. He looked pleasantly shocked when they showed a 28 year-old clip of REM and seemed to enjoy the tribute band altering the song to "It's The End Of The Show".

Watch it on the BBC iPlayer. Not available at this very minute but should be up by tomorrow at least. Classic TV, very much in short supply.

Stop press: watching yesterday's show with Rick Wakeman plugging his Grumpy Rock Star book

iPlayer

It's online now. I wasn't sure whether Stipey was enjoying the band at the end, or if he was just trying to look as if he were enjoying it. Either way, it's all very odd.

And they guy playing Peter Buck really should make more of an effort, get a wig or something.

Thanks for the link

I couldn't believe he agreed to stick around all show and was a good sport on all topics I thought. And what an eclectic bunch: Brandreth, Tufnell and that butterfly woman - blimey! And yes, 'Buck' should have done better; even the Ken Stringfellow played his part. The singer looked more like the drummer from James than Stipe.
