Mi Cyann Believe It
Posted by jimmyshoes01 on 5 January 2012 - 12:47pm.
In my Desert Island Discs marathon rather presciently, given the big news story of the day this week, it was Ben Zephaniah's turn to open Sue Lawley's eyes to other cultures and music.
Among his fine choices was this slice of dub poetry from Mikey Smith.
Well, I had to get off the treadmill and compose myself. In just the snippet that rights reasons allowed I was floored by the man's prose and flow.
I am now on the look out for the album that was released just prior to his death by stoning in Jamaica following an argument at a political rally.
I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

great album, although...
...sadly long deleted. produced by linton kwesi johnson, featuring members of aswad but, as far as i know, island records have no plans to re-issue it.
i have a copy on vinyl and an *ahem* electronic copy on my PC but i'm pretty sure it's never been released on cd.
*cough*

Thank you
After a cursory trudge round a showery London and trying Sounds of the Universe and Sister Ray, I will *cough* this on to my computer when I get home.
This will probably start me off on another obsession that will eat into my never growing pay packet.
What else do you recommend in the genre?
What else do you recommend in the genre?
start with:
Linton Kwesi Johnson - any/all of Bass Culture, Dread Beat An Blood, Making History
*ahem*
I too have electronic copy on my mac - god knows where i got it now but i was glad when one of the massive pointed this gem out a while back!
Arena
There was also a fantastic Arena programme about him where he "did" (not the right word I know) the best ever reading of Shelley's Mask of Anarchy along with his own brilliant work. Come on Island/hip-o-select, deluxe edition with the cd and dvd of the Arena prog. You know it makes sense.
The problem may just be with the amount of
recorded audio material that's available. The Island LP is only about 34 minutes long all told, and there may not be enough in the way of additional material to justify a CD release.
The DVD option is possibly a better bet - there must be enough video footage to do at least one disc; and if you stick the LP on there in lossless form as well, you might have a package that's marketable. The question would be how big the market is for it?
Having said that, Bristol Archive Records are doing a sterling job with Bristol's punk and reggae legacy, so maybe they could suggest a way of making Michael's work available again in the digital age?
PS Happy New Year, sarge!
If any of you would like a copy,
drop me a line; I did a CD format needle-drop from my vinyl copy a year or two back, and still have the iso file to replicate copies as required. I can also email you the artwork if you like.
