Metheny at the Barbican
Posted by peterafifer on 9 July 2010 - 6:53pm.
I'm just heading off to catch my flight from Scotland to see Pat at the Barbican. If anyone else from the massive is there, have a look up to the balcony and see a spekky Fifer floating blissfully to Pat's greatest hits. 25 years since Heppo stuck him on the Whistle Test and still my hero. Pat, obviously.

How
did I not know this was on?! Doh!
I saw the PMG at Hammersmith in 1987 (I think) and they were just great. I hope he plays James for you, probably my iPod's most played track.
Another admirer
I saw them in the early 90s, I think, at the RFH. Absolutely wonderful gig. When the intro to Last Train Home struck up, I was Very Happy.
I too saw Pat
Manchester Apollo around about 1984/5?
I was there!!
And it was most excellent. Also saw him in Birmingham with Brad Mehldau more recently.
Me Too...
One of the few artists I have seen live more than once. Both at the Hammersmith Odeon/Apollo, the first time was on the Still Life Talking tour in 1987, touring one of PMG's best albums. The second was on The Way Up Tour, in 2005, when the entire album was played, before a 90 minute run through old favourites. Both concerts were about 3 hours long. He certainly gives his fans great value for money.
At both gigs, 18 years apart but in the same venue, he seemed to be wearing exactly the same clothes:

Do enjoy the concert!
For me he's the one I've seen most often (4)
in a tie with Suzanne Vega. I'm sure you'll find your travels well worth while.
I was at a London PMG one in spring '85 (Hammersmith I think); a London PMG one in May 92 I think, for my 30th birthday--we did indeed have to leave before the last train home ...[but that's because he doesn't stint, as well as the railways]; one in Boston, MA in 99 or so, which was the Trio 99/00 and finally with Michael Brecker in Cambridge, looks like it must have been Jan 2000. I wish I'd be more in the mood for that one, looking at what that particular pairing could do:
I see he's trying out the black Steve Jobs look as an alternative to the stripy one here:

though to modify what my Mum once said to me about Bowie, you know you are getting on a bit when Pat Metheny starts to look older ...
Enjoy it for us all, cheers.
