Merry Xmas And Goodbye

RobertC's picture

I've been giving this a lot of thought and I think it may be time for me to move on. I stopped posting for a while due to that notorious thread, and the arrows mallarkey and the anti-Bargepole campaign. That aside, I really feel that the site has changed quite a lot,(and I am not saying for the worst), since my time as a regular reader, and the past six months as a contributor. It's just of a different character. Please do not mistake this as being a criticism, it is not. It has always been a broad church, and all the better for it, and long may it continue as such, but I cannot really contribute anymore. This is not meant as a criticism at all, and it is entirely down to me.
My views on the X Factor, Cowell, Famous Friends etc are entirely negative and not worth posting really as I have nothing to say etc.

Thanks to the Fraser and the team, and everyone that has and does contribute. Have a wonderful Christmas and a great New Year.

1

That's a shame.

Allow me to raise the tone with this question. There's a copy of Enya's Womble menstruation song, Orinoco Flow, to whoever gets it right.

Which religious leader pleaded: "Let me be full dead ere I be dismembered?" and what was his fate?

1
Albert Edward | 22 December 2009 - 4:56pm

Thomas a Becket?

Anywhere near?

0
badger_king | 22 December 2009 - 7:38pm

It's good

It's very good.

But it's not right.

This particular chap made a catastrophic error in asking to be spared one type of execution, only to be given another.

0
Albert Edward | 22 December 2009 - 7:57pm

Savonarola?

I know he was burnt to death - was it to avoid the rack? (By the way, even by this website's standards, this must be one of the quickest digressions from the original post. It's the kind of thing that keeps me for one to keep coming back.)

0
Melville | 22 December 2009 - 8:32pm

Was it Cardinal Wolsey........?

Thought he'd got "one up" on Henry VIII only to be hung drawn and quartered later when beardy boy found the extent of his deception and Popeism?

0
Six Dog | 22 December 2009 - 10:08pm

Mr Waite

You're so close. Out by a matter of years. Wolsey died of natural causes, though.

0
Albert Edward | 22 December 2009 - 10:46pm

Sir Thomas Cromwell 1540?

The axeman had somewhere between three and five attempts before a successful beheading.

0
Steven C | 22 December 2009 - 11:04pm

Again, so close.

I believe Thomas Cromwell's plea was, "Mercy, mercy, mercy."

But you're so close. Put it this way, the guy we're talking about would have been smiling down from heaven the day Cromwell was beheaded, for sure.

0
Albert Edward | 22 December 2009 - 11:08pm

Thomas More

?

0
soapdodger | 23 December 2009 - 8:39am

Burning hot

but no.

If you want a clue, you might think about spending warm summer days indoors, writing frightening verse to a buck-toothed girl in Luxembourg.

Alternatively, you could cast your eyes upwards to the name of the thread starter.

0
Albert Edward | 23 December 2009 - 8:59am

Worse than being hanged in chains?

The poor bugger also got portrayed by Sean Bean in a TV series about Henry VIII. Now that's a fate you wouldn't wish on anyone.

0
Richard Lowe | 23 December 2009 - 9:56am

Well done, Richard

You are correct.

Aske pleaded not to be hung drawn and quartered so Henry devised an even worse punishment -- that he be hung in chains from the side of York castle. It took him three weeks to die.

0
Albert Edward | 23 December 2009 - 10:12am

Good man, “Bob“ Aske

Country's been going to the dogs since the Dissolution of the Monasteries. That's when the rot set in.

1
Richard Lowe | 23 December 2009 - 12:02pm

Cake...

...or death?

0
Pax Romana | 15 January 2010 - 3:20am

Did he die by Mau Mau?

1
Uncle Wheaty | 22 December 2009 - 8:34pm

They come, they go

Just cos you've got nothing good to say, doesn't mean you can't post.

As the late Blanche Hunt said to son-in-law Ken Barlow, if you're not going to enjoy the misfortunes of others, you're going to have a very long and unhappy old age.

2
Five-Centres | 22 December 2009 - 5:01pm

Door's always open mate..

I'm not quite sure which notorious thread you were referring to but, like I said to Adman, who has similarly left the parish of late, I always really liked reading your posts and like I wish I'd said to Adman, please remember that should you ever reconsider, the broad church doors will be flung open for you. A very Merry Christmas to you.

4
Vorgongod | 22 December 2009 - 5:12pm

...

I joined a month or so ago, and whilst only being a newcomer, I do always enjoy your posts. A broad church needs perspectives, dissension and variety - there's no worth in everyone standing round carrying signs that mostly say 'hooray to our side'!
To echo Vorgongod, a Merry Christmas to you.

2
Slotbadger | 22 December 2009 - 5:57pm

And Newcomers are the lifeblood

I'm no veteran here either slot, bu, for what it's worth, you're very welcome, I liked your postings about Rod Liddle and Miss Jenkins over by the organ will tell you about the upcoming bring and buy sale..

0
Vorgongod | 22 December 2009 - 6:15pm

Thanks!

Much appreciated, vorgon and I avidly await the b'n'b sale

0
Slotbadger | 22 December 2009 - 6:54pm

Given that he is not here anymore...

...I guess I ask this of people who are still around: Do you think anyone would actually notice if you left this site? I wouldn't expect anyone would notice me gone.

I have seen a few postings lately referring to comers and goers (Archie Whatsit I think left?), does it really matter so long as there is a quorum and the spirit/style of the site is maintained?

4
kb | 22 December 2009 - 5:58pm

For what it's worth

I do miss Archie's surreal excursions, more often than not in the company a like minded poster. I refer you to http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/come-name-the-band - one of my favourite tangents, even though I wasn't allowed to play! Where is Backwards 7 by the way - I miss him too. Oh it's all changed round here ...

0
Steven C | 22 December 2009 - 11:55pm

Did Archie leave?

Why? Anyway, I think kb's question is a good one and I'd like to broaden it: is there an archetypal Word blogger? I've mentioned before that this is the only place I blog because I love the general tone of the place and the fact that there are always some nice people around who want to tell you about things you might be interested in, or debate a point with you. I also love the way the most innocent of questions can unleash a cascade of insightful, often poignant contributions (the recent 'What would you tell your 16 yr old self' being a case in point). Perhaps all will be revealed in The Lamb in January!

0
Vorgongod | 22 December 2009 - 6:22pm

...and a Merry Christmas to you

Jamsodonnell. For it was he. A quick check reveals many posts started and some with hundreds of replies. I had to check because RobertC is not a name that stands out to me but Jams was much more, well, original.

Everyone is here today gone tomorrow but there is no need to go away. Take a vacation, come back refreshed but don't be a stranger. As for that Archie feller...I'm sure he's bloody itching to corect sum speling misstakes.

0
Beany | 22 December 2009 - 6:31pm

The jig is up

for Jamsodonnell.

0
Lando Cakes | 22 December 2009 - 7:07pm

Thankyou Beany

and everyone else. Jams will return in a different guise. Have a great craic and all the best.

0
RobertC | 22 December 2009 - 7:26pm

Is this Eastenders ?

What's with the dramatic announcements and grand exits ?

It only takes a couple of minutes to scan the latest blog posts, and if there's nothing of interest I get on with some other non-work

More often than not I will read things but not post anything at all

3
latenitetellyvision | 22 December 2009 - 7:16pm

The blog

is itself bigger than any individual blogger. Or something like that.

5
Bruised Mike | 22 December 2009 - 7:33pm

Oi - Bob C! - over here!

" Jams will return in a different guise." - ooh you big tease you!
Seriously - don't go - take everyone's advice and have a break. This is a broad church, we can't all agree on everything, and people do seem to get rather snippy at times, but don't go and do an Archie on us. We need a man of your consummate taste on this blog. Stuff the bloody X-Factor, lets talk about important things, like Joe Boyd's Witchseason roster, or Kate Bush's Babooshka video!

0
soapdodger | 22 December 2009 - 8:36pm

Babooshka video ?

I'm off to YouTube right now! ( purely for research reasons, obviously). I've still not recovered from being 10 years old and seeing a whispy mist swirling Kate enticing me like an erotic Banshee. These things mark you for life.

0
RobertC | 22 December 2009 - 8:59pm

Just because you got told off by Fraser..

Isn't really reason enough to do a Valparaiso..

1
Lenny Law | 22 December 2009 - 8:57pm

Merry Xmas and Hello

again. Sorry. Got the loin nettles.

0
RobertC | 22 December 2009 - 9:05pm

what are?

The loin nettles?

0
Lunaman | 22 December 2009 - 10:08pm

indie landfill act

3
badartdog | 22 December 2009 - 10:23pm

Bid for attention?

I'm not quite sure why you, and others recently, feel the need to make these dramatic grand gestures and bid an emotional farewell. I'd really like to know.
The truth is most people who come here will probably not notice, and I don't mean that unkindly.
I used to post here some years ago before the site got its first all-singing all-dancing make over, and I'm sure there are others from that time who still around, the only one I remember is James Blast - and that's because his name stuck in my mind and because he's Scottish, as is Mrs P.
I'd be surprised if he remembered me from that time, it's only the internet after all.
I post every now and then, and currently have one going on the seven days hot topics, but would I be missed if I move on tomorrow? Not a hope.

14
IanP | 22 December 2009 - 9:13pm

Agreed

But I've seen these kind of grand exits on other sites too. I don't know why people do it either. It's bizarre.

3
Johan | 22 December 2009 - 10:04pm

Enough melodramatic exits already!

Like the Sugababes, this forum will go on long after all the original members have left.

2
Dr Volume | 23 December 2009 - 1:58am

I couldn't agree more

I'm on the Joni Mitchell Discussion List, and have been for over decade. In that time a number of people have flounced off, and I've never really found it very dignified.

0
Theo Zoffrok | 23 December 2009 - 4:59pm

Well

There's a myth around here about what a nice place it is. It isn't always. It's sometimes like a jostling prep school common room. Girls Aloud ?

Final post.

3
RobertC | 23 December 2009 - 7:43pm

It is one of the friendliest

It is one of the friendliest places on the internet that I'm aware of. Though like anywhere online, or in life, you might often find your views challenged, particularly if they are objectionable.

Toodle-pip!

1
Spartacus Mills | 24 December 2009 - 11:24am

I Rest My Case !

God,that was easy. Friendly indeed ! You have just validated my theory on humourless bullying. Eat a peach dude. Love and Peace.

0
RobertC | 24 December 2009 - 3:55pm

you still here?

;D

0
James Blast | 24 December 2009 - 4:30pm

Only because I'm trying

to settle something in my mind for the last time. A couple of weeks ago I joined a couple of other blog sites, and there is nothing like the same level of bad mannered and unpleaseantness that there seems to be in certain quarters here. There's a distinct po-faced and humourless judgemental up your own fundament-ness that's relatively recent. I used to read this blog for many months before I plucked up the courage to contribute, in the days when light hearted tongue in cheek conversation was the norm. I've been doing some archive blog reading, and this place really has drastically changed it's character in many areas. I'm not referring solely to blog theme, that doesn't matter, but the level of good natured wit and acceptance of differing opinion has altered. The good natured cosy pub chat with friendly animated opinion vibe now comes complete with a kicking in the car park if you're unlucky. The sad thing is, seeing how many good people have gone. I can't be arsed justifying myself to small minded trendy cultural chip on the shoulder types who couldn't spot humour if it was in bed with them. It's a waste of brain cells, but I'm sad and it's kind of one last look over the shoulder before I go. I know that I may receive some 'witty' replies, or not, and I really couldn't give a fuck now, but it's a shame and it just seems to re-confirm my conclusion.

Anyway, as someone rightly said, the blog is bigger.

Have a good one, James.

4
RobertC | 24 December 2009 - 5:01pm

"trendy cultural chip on the shoulder types"

Does anyone here admit to being 'trendy'? Anyone live in Hoxton? Wear odd square spectacles? Drive an Audi TT?

0
stimpy | 24 December 2009 - 5:15pm

@ RC

I have absolutely no gripe with you Robert and I was hoping to inject a bit of "non po-faced" humour into the situ. Yet another of my epic FAIL!s

ah well, have a very pleasant and peaceful season with you and yours

2
James Blast | 24 December 2009 - 6:48pm

Two days ago

you were saying the site had changed but not necessarily for the worse. It certainly sounds as if you now believe it has changed very much for the worse.

I don't agree with that at all. If you want to get a flavour of somewhere which frequently turns nasty try the Guardian blogs. You'll soon come crawling back here!

0
Johan | 25 December 2009 - 12:31am

Are you still here?**

There are a fair few c***s on here and no mistake - I actually look out for their posts as I form a picture of the sort of people I think they are, that's part of the fun. Most posts on here are positively Reithian.

But I stand by what I said earlier - no-one misses anyone. Even 'celebrity' posters aren't missed (Andrew Collins seems to have left, Mark Ellen is rarer than an Ian Bell century).

** This is a rhetorical question, as I suspect you are still here.

0
kb | 29 December 2009 - 2:02pm

Bullying?

Do me a favour.

I made a humourous remark about you claiming not to know who Cheryl Cole is and have since been subject to several unpleasant onslaughts from yourself. In fairness I responded in kind, but I have since apologised publically to you, yet rather than accept my apology you've continued to whinge and slag me off at every available opportunity.

Merry Christmas Robert. No prizes for guessing what the C stands for, eh?

3
Spartacus Mills | 26 December 2009 - 11:46am

Archie?

I've never heard of him, but he sounds a dodgy sort to me.

0
SirTerence | 22 December 2009 - 9:52pm

Mmmmmm

Sir Terence can you tell me your views on Lady Gaga?

0
Dave Amitri | 22 December 2009 - 10:07pm

I'd just like to say

I loved Bibendum, but I thought you overstretched yourself with Quaglinos. And no one can, ahem, hold a candle to your ashtrays.

0
DougieJ | 22 December 2009 - 10:41pm

and I still have my original Habitat chicken brick

from the early 70s.

0
stimpy | 24 December 2009 - 4:11pm

In my more passive-aggressive moods…

… say, after another of my postings has suffered the onanistic fate of falling on stony ground, I've considered such a valedictory gesture - rather in the manner in which, as a teenager, one would fantasise about dying tragically and then imagine the reactions of various friends/enemies/family members ('What if I DIED? That'd show them…'). The great thing here, of course, is that you might get to enjoy the subsequent wailing/gnashing of teeth etc. Never did it though - always seemed a bit pointless. And something always brings you back… back… back…

3
David Rothon | 22 December 2009 - 11:43pm

...and it's farewell from me

Adieu. Sayonara. Be seeing you.

Until we meet again.

In the morning light

Goodnight. Don't let the bedbugs bite.

ZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

1
Beany | 22 December 2009 - 11:30pm

This one is slightly easier.

Of whom did Henry VIII say, "I like her not."

0
Albert Edward | 23 December 2009 - 10:40am

Vanessa Feltz

No?

1
Iainso | 23 December 2009 - 11:07am
Glenbervie | 23 December 2009 - 12:07pm

Ann of Cleves?

She was reputed (perhaps unfairly?) not to have been a great beauty, certainly in H8's eyes. (Didn't he supposedly liken her to a 'Flanders mare'?)

0
David Rothon | 23 December 2009 - 12:12pm

One of his...

FPOs?

0
Patrick Crowther | 23 December 2009 - 12:12pm

Wild guess..

Catherine of Aragon?

0
Declan | 23 December 2009 - 10:59am

It's close

but not right. This was his early impression of the person concerned.

0
Albert Edward | 23 December 2009 - 11:10am

Elizabeth 1?

the fruit of his own royal loins?

0
Vorgongod | 23 December 2009 - 12:11pm

Mr Rothon is correct

It's the reputedly ugly Ann of Cleves, as played by Joss Stone in The Tudors.

OK, another triv question, not Tudor related. Of all Saint Etienne's single releases why might Sarah Cracknell be less well disposed to Only Love Can Break Your Heart? The answer is not, 'Because it's a cover,' it's something else. But what?

0
Albert Edward | 23 December 2009 - 12:31pm
el hombre malo | 23 December 2009 - 12:36pm

In one!

She doesn't sing on it.

I have to go out now, perhaps as the correct answerer of the last you could set the next?

0
Albert Edward | 23 December 2009 - 12:40pm

I'll put my thinking cap on

and do my best

0
el hombre malo | 23 December 2009 - 12:51pm

They were all

presents from Santa! What do I win?

0

It's good, but it's not what I have on the card

So, this one is still open.

0
el hombre malo | 23 December 2009 - 1:49pm

Nicked from classical music?

Bach, Beethoven and someone else?

0
Richie B | 23 December 2009 - 2:03pm

correct!

Rachmaninoff was the other one.

I now pass the quiz-master's hat on to Richie B.

0
el hombre malo | 23 December 2009 - 2:14pm

Right then...

What creature connects the following people in song: Paul McCartney, Burl Ives, Neil Hannon, Jim Morrison and Bob Dylan?

0
Richie B | 23 December 2009 - 2:25pm

Could it be

Frogs? Sheepdogs? (You can tell I only know the Paul McCartney songs well-ish)

Or Winnie the Pooh?

0
Susie Baby | 23 December 2009 - 2:27pm

No, I've got it

It's Rupert the Bear, isn't it? Tell me, tell me, tell me...

0
Susie Baby | 23 December 2009 - 2:38pm

It's Frogs

Frog Chorus, Froggie went a courting (twice-Dylan and Ives) Frog Princess and Peace Frog.

Your turn Susie!

0
Richie B | 23 December 2009 - 3:05pm

Oh no...

I'm rubbish at questions. I'll have to bow out gracefully. Anyone else?

0
Susie Baby | 23 December 2009 - 5:45pm

Oh, okay then.

The cover of Echoes by Pink Floyd is a close up of an ear underwater, but what did the members of Floyd originally want shown on the cover?

0
Albert Edward | 23 December 2009 - 6:28pm

I know! I know!

Something preposterous and cod-symbolic.

0
Patrick Crowther | 23 December 2009 - 6:31pm

"You should have seen the cover they wanted to do. It wasn't a glove, believe me"

2

0

Crikey, yes.

And thanks for pointing that out, Mr M, it was indeed Meddle.

Do I

I'll get me coat.

0

What was the anti-Bargepole campaign? Was Bargepole the annoying pillock who wrote everything in the third person?

3
JQW | 23 December 2009 - 7:50pm

You can't say that

it's bullying. Apparently.

3
ChaosandMorphine | 23 December 2009 - 8:47pm

Annoying Pillock

or just a decent enough bloke writing in a style that you don't like ?
Why the petty insult ? It's not humour. It's un-called for.

3
RobertC | 24 December 2009 - 4:33pm

I would just like to say...

Merry Christmas and goodbye

0
Glenbervie | 24 December 2009 - 5:28pm

Oh

Have you fallen out with Ann Goodbye then?

0
Beany | 24 December 2009 - 10:06pm

I've just read this thread

I agree grand gestures of departure seem odd. these sites are like like TV if you don't like the show just turn it off =- no need to go public.

Having said that I have noticed that topics of recent months have been very Britain focussed.Fair cop- its a British mag and most contributors to the site are Brits but being Australian I have little to add to most threads.

What keeps me on the site is the wit,the articulate expression of views and some pretty deep knowledge on topics I am interested in ....on occasion.

i happen to agree with Robert C on some of the nastiness. For example - "you still here then?" and this bit from JQW "What was the anti-Bargepole campaign? Was Bargepole the annoying pillock who wrote everything in the third person?" This was quite rightly criticised by Robert C. As he said, it is just plain nasty.

0
Junior Wells | 29 December 2009 - 11:14am

The biggest problem Tony, as I see it..

.. is that like emails things posted on a forum have no tone of voice, no eye contact and are said in the emotional mindset of the reader not the writer.

I'm glad this forum doesn't have those bloody annoying emoticons that many other do, but sometimes they can help to emphasise a point or lighten the mood. The only differentiation that can really be made on here is if SOMEONE IS SHOUTING but even then they may be in a hurry and not realise their CapsLock key is down or they may be unaware of the forum protocol. The pillocks.

Bickering, I think

0

Awww...

0
Guitarbug | 29 December 2009 - 12:40pm

perhaps

as with email, when you are wound up, it is better to wait a while before sending and even then reread before sending to assess nuance - a policy, I might add, that I have repeatedly ignored in my corporate life, and at some cost!

I only contributed because , as i read that chain I thought " ooh this is not nice" ,espcially when the heading was Merry Xmas.

Anyway it's going to be 35 celsius today so its off to the beach for me with the summer music festival season imminent.
