Meridian 1970
Anyone else been turned on by this? It's taken me forever to get around to ripping compilation albums for the i-Thingy and this morning I dusted down this album of 'Protest, Sorrow, Hobos, Folk and Blues' compiled by Jon Savage in 2005.
God it's good. Everything released in 1970, hence some truly great stoner/mellow classics. I was familiar with some of the songs (Free's Mouthful of Grass, Rod Stewart's Man of Constant Sorrow, Loudon Wainwright III's Black Uncle Remus, Nick Drake's Three Hours, Skip Spence's Cripple Creek), some are from periods in the artists' careers I've always avoided (early Steve Miller, James Gang, late-ish Donovan, late The Move, Dave Mason post Traffic) and some from artists I'd never heard of, but will Spotify later on (Leo Kottke, Tommy Flanders, Danny O'Keefe). It also contains only the second Meic Stevens song I've ever heard - both excellent. I must try an album of his.
If you haven't come across this compilation, it's definitely worth checking out. Song of the day for me is Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave by Dave Mason. Now where's my afghan coat...

It's one of my Top Five comps
of all time!
Every track a winner.
Great, great
album.
Looks Brill....
So much so that I've just ordered off Amazon for under a fiver !! Thanks for the suggestion !
Agree
I love it. In similar vein there's a comp based on the mag Zig Zag if slightly quirky early 70s acts I love too.
Thanks Hanwellboy
Made my day that has!
As an addendum, I've been listening to Meic Stevens' Outlander on Spotify since - what a great album/artist/lost classic. I wonder whether all the US copies for sale on Amazon are the enhanced 20 track versions.
Leo Kottke
Well worth a look......although primarily a guitarist his voice won't half make your bass speakers rumble in a very satisfying manner.
It is an absolutely terrific compilation
Somewhere I've got a CD Jon burned for me of the stuff he wanted to incorporate but couldn't clear.
Damn!
I'd always hoped for a sequel.
And Meridian 1971, 1972, etc., would be most welcome too.
An enticing prospect
I'd love to see the track listing. As I recall, the disc was preceded by a Home Taping (those were the days) feature in Mojo. Greater HJH content, perhaps even bookending the mix with Lennon and Harrison tracks.
Home Taping tracklist...
...here.
Can I ask
If you remember any of the tracks he couldn't clear DH? Maybe we could put together a Spotify list.
Guess what?
Brilliant
Thanks David.
So the tracks that aren't on the released record are:
Ry Cooder Available Space
The American Dream - Big Brother
Neil Young - Here We Are in The Years
Blind Faith - Can't Find My Way Home
Led Zeppelin - Tangerine
Sutherland Brothers - Sunny Street W14
Michael Hurley - The Werewolf
Cat Stevens - Mona Bone Jakon
I'll see if I can get the Spotify thing to help out...

There you go. Two tracks not on Spotify - replaced by (in my view) suitable substitutes - see if you can spot.
Crikey
Number five wrongfooted me.
Yes,
It's a bit out there isn't it, but pretty good space rock, with one of the best jazz guitar solos I've heard.
Meic Stevens drinks/sings in
Meic Stevens drinks/sings in my local. Lovely bloke.
Tell him from me...
he's got a new fan!
Does he live in Solva still?
He is a genius. Some of his Welsh language stuff is lovely, and Outlander should be in all decent record collections.
My maternal family are all from the Pembrokeshire coast, Square and Compass and Trefin mainly, but my late Grandfather was born in Solva.
Blind Faith....
....was from '69. Or am I missing the point???
I have the cd, picked it up for a few quid when MVC went bust bout 5 years back. Great album!!
Here's the released album playlist
With one or two hopefully appropriate substitutions where Spotify falls short:

I've got that somewhere
You've inspired me to dig it out and made me smile. Many thanks
Danny O'Keefe
Danny is still around and doing brilliant work. I've heard some of the demos of what he's working on now and they are stunning.
If you want to learn more about him, http://www.dannyokeefe.com/
The Airplane
Really good remind Occram. I listened to it again last night an this morning. That Airplane track is brilliant - anyone want to recommend other Airplane tracks / albums to find - not a band I know much about I realise, much as I generally love West Coast stuff.
Jon Savage's follow up 'Meridian 1970 Vol2'
is now available to download for a short while from the Heavenly records website: http://heavenlyrecordings.com/news/2010/03/08/merdian-1970-vol-ii/
Personally I'd love to
But I can't make it work for me.
Same here
Despite being a member of the Heavenly site. Shame.
Timed out..
...every time.
This link works for me

the link is dead
That link is dead now. Any chance of reposting/re-uploading? Thanks
I've managed to download the zipped folder, 103mb
but the songs won't load into iTunes. Anyone else have this problem?
I couldn't open the zip
I'm giving up
Re-Up?
Would you be able to make it available for others?
Meridian 1970 vol 2
I read DH's comment in his Home Service column (May 2010), and would love to hear volume 2 of the Meridian compilation, as volume 1 was rather good. Anyone got a link, tracklist or anything? I missed the Heavenly download slot.
Re-up request
Loved the first Meridian comp and then saw DH's mention of a download for Vol2. Any chance anyone could re-up a link as I've missed the Heavenly download slot. Thanks in advance
Or..
Even just a tracklist. Cheers
Anyone?
Help please!
Cheers
