Memories of the way we wore
A Nigel Shirt from Boy's 1981 Black Mail catalogue
Were you ever a 'Nigel' wearer (desperately trendy until they became A Flock of Seagulls signature shirt)? Or perhaps fitted yourself out in some other futurist finery: a Zoot Suit with key chain and armbands, shortly replaced by Tukka boots and stretch jeans, or some Kung Fu slippers and a Japanese flag T-shirt..
In the seventies it may have been Orange Tab Levis, Lois or Brutus jeans, cheesecloth shirts, Lord Anthony childrenswear or crepes, spoons or stacks for footwear
I'm guilty of all of the above - but what were your favourite fads and forgotten fashions, did you order clothing advertised in the backs of music mags (Bowie Pleated Trousers, Jam Shoes)? Forget the shorthand and stereotypes (80s = Shoulder pads and mullets, 70s = Glam-Disco-Punk), it's the Devil in the detail we want..

God, that...
takes me back! I used to pore over the clothes adverts in the music mags trying to convince my parents to buy me stuff. I had the 'Nigel' shirt, fake leather trousers, 'Duran Duran' boots, and headband! A year later (1983) I wanted the Bowie 'Let's Dance' suit but couldn't afford it. And in 1984 I was a Goth! I spent a lot of my time running away from people that wanted to beat me up!
stretch jeans, kung fu slippers / cuban heel boots
sisters of mercy combat shirt, oh yes. i bought a pair of PVC trousers from an ad once. Wore them to a Cardiacs gig and they disintegrated on me. Pleasant journey home that was, I can assure you.
Split Knee Loons 35/6
maaaaan...
Shades of Grey
The black double-breasted shirt (didn't know they were "Nigel shirts"), the grey flannel baggies from Sutton market and the grey fake suede "points" shoes. Always wanted a proper brown worn leather flying jacket to go with it, but never managed it until I bought my brother's off him - long after the rest of the ensemble was history.
Goth but not forgotten
I was never a Goth, but my mates were. Usually kitted out in a set-piece wardrobe of : motorbike jacket, high buttoned Paisley shirt, crimped bouffant and buckle boots.
Yes, I didn't know
they were called a nigel shirt. Used to wear grey peg trousers, with black winkle pickers and a fetching piece of curtain cord tied round the waste. Then whilst into TG/Whitehouse used to wear a rather grand leather german army coat with various other ex army surplus wear.
No me neither
Until I re-read it in my BOY brochure (sold now on Ebay) - we called them Cavalry Shirts. Similar to what you've mentioned, I remember thinking how trendy Stuart Adamson looked on this cover. As the peg/waffles trousers and mohair v-neck look had literally just started to appear on the streets at exactly the same time.
I started wearing black Levis and Converse boots
in the mid 70s when doing studio work in the US. Never saw any reason to stop wearing them since.
Denim jacket, tour t-shirts, jeans, Converse...
I wasn't overly concerned with fashion in my teenage years - *blinding light of self-revelation* - so that's why I didn't have a girlfriend.
anyone else
ever suffer the indignity of trying to run for a bus in a pair of X-clothes bondage trousers with tiger skin bum flap?
everyones seems to have been conservative dressers !
What i remember is around 78/79 going into the town centre on a saturday wearing the folowing...a sparkly blue mini dress, black stockings and suspender belt,a biker boot with buckles on one foot,a white stiletto on the other,a long white doctors coat,a dog collar round my neck, black and red spiky hair, various chains, black rubber plunbers gloves, blue childrens plastic sun glasses 2 studded belts round my waist, eye make up.
What i regret is ,that unlike now,no one took photographs as a rule.
As for nigel or cavalry shirts and pleated bowie trousers ive spent weeks searching the internet trying to buy these again. We called them bowie trousers but thats also the name for womens trousers so that all the results are throwing back.I also had shirts which buttoned along one shoulder, burroned diagonally from shoulder to waist and several variations.
I then got into things like tubeway army, berlin blondes and all sorts of electronic stuff so ended up dressed like a mad robot for a few years, then gothic punk came along and now at the age of 46 im still into the music but tend to dress the way i did when i was 20.
I really cant understand why none of the vintage clothes shops sell the trs or shirts....millions of each must have been sold.
i remember one shop in greenock,a sort of boutique that sold bowie suits etc but no one can remember the name of it.
if anyone knows where i could pick up bowie trs or these shirts let me know please?
Sad, but
it was loon pants, tiedye granda vest, stackheel boots AND a budgie jacket.....cool as fuck.
Oh yeah... velvet loons of course
I rocked the scoop neck embroidered cheesecloth shirt look for a few years as well.
