The story is here.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/sep/15/simon-mayo-chris-evans

The good news is that Mayo and Kermode will continue doing films on a Friday on 5Live but will now get two hours to do them in.

Mark Radcliffe is being talked up as the replacement for the rest of the week.

Thoughts?

Hello to Jason Issacs

well it was clear that they weren't going to let a gold Sony winning gem like the wittertaining Kermode\Mayo friday afternoon slot just waltz off into the sunset.

Now if we can only make sure that they won't be interrupted by dull sport and political guff from the House then it will be perfect.

Radcliffe would be a good replacement, as long at it isn't Murray or Bacon that's fine. Phil Williams has sat in more for Mayo than anyone but I just never warmed to the lad.

pithy reviews gone?

simon confirmed at the beginning of today's show that he is replacing chris evans but he and mark kermode are staying put on to present the film reviews on friday afternoons on 5live(he was'nt clear if it was the full 1-4 slot or just 3-4) personally love friday afternoon's on 5live

i will miss simon yesterday's show when he interviewed michael palin and iain banks was very good

i'd listen to mark radcliffe on 5live but please don't get williams/murray or that idiot alan partridge impersonator richard bacon to replace simon

It's 2pm - 4pm

According to the Guardian article:

"Mayo said... His Friday Radio 5 Live film programme with Kermode will continue to run from 2pm to 4pm... He said the film show would be "big and sparkly and bigger than ever"."

I thought this was announced on the day of the Wogan news

He's taking over from Chris Evans.

It wasn't announced...

... but everyone assumed he was.

Personally as long as him and Kermode remain together I'm happy. Thank the god of radio that Richard Bacon ain't doing it. Phil Williams was fine, but he never grabbed me.

Radcliffe could be good. He possesses a bit of "hinterland" as the saying goes.

The BBC sort of said it would happen

The BBC News article after Wogan made his announcement (dated 7th of this month) said that "Simon Mayo is expected to take over from Evans as Radio 2's drivetime show host."

Still it should be good, and I'm glad the film reviews aren't going anywhere.

Now, if only Steve Wright would find something else to do...

I can't imagine The Good Doctor doing it.

At the first sign of a guest having an opinion which is in some way divergent to his own, he'd go off on one. Or flounce off.

Seriously, I don't think he'd do it. The sport side of R5L is vital and Kermode has said often enough that he has absolutely no interest in matters sporting.

I'd like Colin Murray. Phil Williams is a bit anodyne. And Dicky Bacon? No chance. How about them poaching Christian O'Connell from Absolute? He's already started doing a new show on R5L.. He'd be great.

Late Night Radio

I will be sad if Radcliffe leaves Radio Two as I enjoy his show with Stuart, but can understand him wanting a daytime slot.I'll be at work, so will miss his new afternoon show on Five most days. Radio Two really needs another regular late night show from 10pm (the slot Radcliffe used to have) although Gideon Coe's show on 6music at 10pm is very good indeed.

Mark Radcliffe without music?

Hard to imagine.

renkadima | 15 September 2009 - 6:45pm

He's done without music

He's stood in for Mayo on more than one occasion in the past.

0
PaddyH | 15 September 2009 - 6:48pm

True...

....but on a permanent basis? The pertinent question is can *he* manage without music (for ever)?

0
renkadima | 15 September 2009 - 6:55pm

Hmm... can't see it being a

Hmm... can't see it being a long term solution though. It's part of Radcliffe's character to present and whitter on (entertainingly) about music.

bargepole is unsure

how well mayo will suit the drivetime slot - gives the impression he feels he moved onto bigger and better things when he went to 5live .
