Matthew Jay Tribute
Eight and a half years ago I wrote the following words: "Whether Matthew Jay will be as massive as he deserves to be - and believe me, he deserves a string of top 10 hits and undying critical adulation - isn't what's really important. What is important though, is that at just 21, he has the wonderful songs, the sumptuous voice and the gently sussed poise to become very precious indeed to those people willing to listen. You should be one of them..."
This Friday should have been his 30th birthday, but, shockingly, in September 2003, Matthew died after falling from a 7th storey window in central London. The reasons for his death remain unsolved.
I spoke to Matthew two or three times during his short career and was lucky enough to see him play live once or twice too. He was an excellent songwriter with a great voice and a desire to make music that actually meant something to people. A tribute concert - Further Than Tomorrow - is being held on Friday October 10 at the Shepherds Bush Empire in aid of Unicef and Amnesty. Chris Difford, James Walsh from Starsailor, Kathryn Williams and Neill MacColl will all appear.

I remember your review very clearly
and as a result bought Matthew Jay's album. It was - and is - staggeringly good. He was far above the raft of other singer songwriters of the time with whom was, in my opinion, unfairly categorised. I still listen to it on a fairly regular basis, and you're spot on when you say he clearly wanted to make music that mattered. I never had the opportunity to see him live, but it's good to know that he is remembered.
Too soon
You're Always Going Too Soon was written about a friend who had died tragically, at a young age. With Matthew's passing his best song also became his epitaph.
It's somewhat bitter-sweet that when Draw and the EPs that preceded it were released, his music was out of step with what was popular at the time. We've seen the resurgence of folk over the last few years. Had he lived, he would have been at the vanguard of the new folk movement.
Not heard this guys music
Not heard this guys music before...on the basis of that clip I want to hear lots more; all that there is.

StevenC: It is a great record - really pleased it's brought you such pleasure. I've been playing it myself quite a bit recently.
B7: You're right - he was something of an oddity at the time. The fact that he'd even heard of Nick Drake surprised me (he would only have been twenty when I first spoke to him) - I remember that very well.
Mat: This is worth a bid. So's this and this...
Ebay bid out in...damn you!!
Ebay bid out in...damn you!! More money I haven't got...
Still, it's all worth it.
Excellent album
Draw is an excellent album, I too was saddened to hear he had died. It was around the same time as Elliot Smith I recall.
