Entertainment For Lively Minds
Massivista-in-waiting
I popped into WH Smith to buy the new Word today (sadly my subscription has lapsed as I'm somewhat brassic at present), and was perusing the proximate periodicals when a hand reached past me to pick up the latest copy of "Guitarist". The hand belonged to a schoolgirl, about 15 years old at a guess, who informed her friend "I'll be getting this at the weekend". She went on to explain how she could only buy the magazine when her mum had money to give her, meaning she'd had to pass up recent issues with Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck on the cover, but "Come Saturday this'll be mine! The SG guitar on the cover - isn't it beautiful?"
My mind was already boggling at the concept of a teenage black girl on the fringes of east London wanting to know the details of Jeff Beck's favourite plectrum, when she uttered the Massive-tastic clincher: "Most of what's on my ipod came from reading this".
Forget my subscription, if I see her again I think I'll buy one for her. The future is safe.

A similar thought struck me
at the recent Record Store Day...I was up at Rough Trade East - and was expecting Brick Lane to be full of balding old beardies like me. However it was teeming with youngsters talking about vinyl and decent music, it brought a lump to my throat!
Hell...
I think we should club together and buy her the SG.
Tonight..
...I'm heading to Liverpool as niece and nephew's band have picked up a gig - they're travelling down from the North East for it. Piled in the van the oldest 18 - she's 16. They're doing what they love which is rocking out and when not doing band gigs she's doing solo gigs. When asked if she didn't get into college what her plan was - head to Europe with my guitar - she's very influenced by Frank Turner at the moment.
Thank You For The Up Arrows..
...gig went well and they made some new friends - but typical teenagers - have you got any CD's "no we forgot them." In stark contrast to some friends who played London this week - woman asks for a CD leaves gig buzzing then promptly plays a track on her Radio Two show saying how good they are live - Band = Man Get Out Woman = Janice Long
That has made me very happy.
... that is all.
It was a proud moment...
...when my 16 year old son played his first live gig (he's a drummer). Yes it was derivative, but it was full of energy and it was almost like being 16 again myself.
Black girls with SGs...
...absolutely nothing unusual in that :-)
Then the girls went back to hiding behind the card rack..
"Hehehe.. That was fun. Look! There's a posh woman! Let's go and pretend we want to buy a copy of The Lady! It'll be as good as that posh girl and the Tatler we did earlier.."
