Yep
Mine's a pint...
How are you all going to recognise each other ?
Why don't you all carry a copy of the word ?
That's what we're doing.
Well done Mr Radio. Carl has volunteered to bring a copy which will be on a table for all to see.
Identifier
I'll be there and I'll have a shop bought copy of Word (I'm pleased to say that my subscription copy arrived the other day).
We are assuming I'll be able to get a table. I'll have it in my jacket pocket with the logo visible if I can't get one.
I should be there for 6.
I'd be tempted to join you, but...
...I'm in Dublin.
Pint of the black stuff
Make sure you buy my good friend Smiley Bolger a pint when you see him then....
Me too.
But I'll be in Cornwall. Next time maybe.
Aargh!
I had forgotten about this and will now be away. I'm awfully sorry folks, next time I'll diary it...
I'd be tempted, but I've got the bloody flu.
And no cash!
Have a nice time people!!
Post a photo or something....?
We're not all in London!!
!
We didn't start the fire.....
Hi masked tortilla. The thread was started by robram who doesn't live in London either. Some of us massive from the smog just joined in and decided to try and meet up. There's nothing to stop other meet ups going on or you getting on a train! Here's the original thread - http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/word-massive-meet-anyone-intereste...
Don't blame us for 2012 Olympics either!
That you can blame me for
without meaning to be too cryptic, part of my job has involved planning for the Olympics. Admittedly, a pretty minor part of it but still...
There
...with bells on
You'll be the
morris dancer then? Easy to spot at least.
Wentworth
I am at Wentworth of all places, at a Golf Dinner of all things. I would love to be in Islington but family demands mean not. Have fun,
If it wasn't for
The Unthanks gig in Reading that nite I would be there. But they are so I can't.
Have fun, chaps n chapesses!
Hey, I'm on a list!
For the next one.
Hope the first one goes off like a frog in a sock.
If I'm back from work in
If I'm back from work in good time I'll jump on the 73 and see you there. Will the gathering go on for a while?
And completely off topic, but I've just had my copy of White Man signed by Topper. I had to share with someone, and most of the people in the office weren't even born when it came out and have been looking at me rather strangely
Yes - lets hope so...
I nearly formed a band with Terry Chimes & Tony James so let's have a chinwag!
Hope to make it
My other half has a possible first dibs at an evening out, but if that doesn't happen I will trundle down, it's only 10 minutes on the bike.
So, we met...........
Azeem, Lunaman, Carl, Hannah, along with Andrew H, Mark Ellen lui meme, 70s Mike, Mikes's mate, Eamonn, Fraser....the beer (this is true) was called "Fairport" in authentic folky font.....splendid time had by all. A Christmas "do" was discussed.........hic. Everyone every bit as great as you imagine. Splendid.
Splendid indeed...
Sorry I couldn't stay longer - I hope the rest of the evening was as enjoyable as the first three pints were.
No-one looking like I imagined
of course.
Sorry I had to bail out earlier than I would have wanted, but I felt my voice crack and my sore throat was raging. I trust everyone got home safely.
It was fun. Apolgies to those whose calls I missed, from those that made them, but I didn't hear it ring. I hope you can make it next time.
The scented Madonna album is Like A Prayer, and I can confirm 25 or so years on from purchase there is still a vestige detectable.
My night with.....the massive!
Hi all,
Cheers for a great evening. It was very much like the blog - but live! I enjoyed it and as usual at these events the time went too fast. Some of the topics were - 'When was the last time you listened to an album all the way through?'. 'When was the last time you had friends round to listen to music?'.'How many CD's do you buy in a year?'
I would love to tell you the real nitty gritty but I'd have to......you know.
Thing is you'll have to make it to the next one!
Cheers for the pint Mark my shout next time.
Hello!
Well, I've finally got broadband at the new place, so I'm back back back on the board.
I had a splendid time too. Lovely to meet everyone, thoroughly marvellous bunch of chaps (as you'd expect!).
Christmas drinks anyone?
Hannah xx
I'm up for it
My throat is back in full working order so I won't have to leave early.
There aren't many Fridays left before Xmas, although it wouldn't necesarily have to be a Friday. I can't make the 4th December.
Here's an idea
we could always do the "Christmas" one in the first couple of weeks of January. I'd imagine between now and 2010 a lot of people are going to be busy most Fridays and I doubt you'll get a decent turn-out on a school night...
I'm there
I like the idea of a january come down type pint. Not the 15th - Mrs.T's birthday. Friday 22nd Jan anyone?
Thirded
January sounds like a much better bet. And the 22nd is good for me too.
Can we stick with Islington? Seemed to work well for everyone. Although somewhere other than that fighty pub...
EDIT: righty ho, here we go, let's get this organised!
http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/fancy-a-pint-word-bloggers-christm...
Sounds great
Sorry I couldn't be there. A real tale of woe from Joe R via Twitter who so very nearly made it.
Be great if another do could be squeezed in this side of crimbo.
All the Best
Crimbo meet........
Yes Sheev it would have been good to see you. I was expecting to see Joe R. I have tried to see his twitter page but I'm not linked to his twitter as yet. Sorry to hear if he had tried to make it and it had gone Pete Tong. I'll get a thread going on a Crimbo meet and hopefully we can do it all again. I predict sorting out a date may be an issue.
Woe is Joe
After catching three separate tubes, I got to the pub at around 6.30pm. I circled the floor several times but could find no hint of a magazine on any table and phone calls went straight to voicemail. I went to HMV for quarter of an hour and tried again. The same thing happened, I circled the pub with no luck and couldn't get through on the phone. The only people who I thought may be the Massive left as I walked past them.
It was at that point I gave up and begun the journey back to the station. Imagine my surprise when the moment I got on the train, a voicemail came through on my phone telling me not only was I missing out on meeting the upstanding citizens of this site, but Messrs Harrison, Lewry and 70s Johnson too! Dejected, I logged onto Twitter, only to see a message from Eamonn Forde saying he too was on his way to the pub.
There I was, sitting in the dark on a train, somewhere South of Clapham, knowing I was missing out on the fun and merriment and it was all my own fault. I still don't know how I missed it - does the pub have a secret room that can only be access by recalling the tracklisting of Liege and Lief?
So, if there's a second one, definitely count me in. In fact, I'll arrive two hours early and carry a giant banner that says "I'm From The Massive".
Now I've got over my initial disappointment (read: devastation) though, I hope everyone had a lovely time. I also think it's fantastic that half the editorial team turned up too; it just goes to show what a top bunch you are and why you have the kind of customer loyalty you do.
So, just for future reference, I'm 5'11", short dark hair, I normally wear a suit for work, I have a shoulder bag, and a pint of Pride, if you're asking.
We were hard to miss
Sorry you didn't catch sight of us. As you walked in we were straight ahead, standing in a group at the bar. After a while we got a table right by where we had been standing and I put the latest copy of Word on the table (which somehow got nicked). I'd had it in my jacket pocket with the masthead visible while we were standing. Even though I had my phone in my shirt pocket I'm afraid I just didn't hear it ring.
Next time we'll have to sort out carnations for everyone, or something like that.
What a fool I am
In that case, I did see you. I don't know what I was expecting, but for some reason I seemed to rule out the possibility that the group at the bar were the people I was looking for. I was so fixated on looking for a copy of the mag that I must have missed the familiar faces amongst the crowd.
Don't worry about missing the calls though; if there's any background noise at all I never hear my phone ring, I'm well known for it.
I do feel like a complete prize idiot now though :-(((
What a shame.......
Sorry to hear your story Joe. We must make sure that next time it will be impossible to miss us. Look forward to catching up next time....
No-one but myself to blame really
From the comments above, it seems like it was pretty clear where you were - observation never was my strong point.
But yes, I'll come to the next one and look forward to seeing everyone then
Sounded wonderful
Hope I can get to the next one.
Great once I found the place...
I failed that intelligence test, to the tune of twenty minutes wandering around aimlessly. It was a splendid do, and I think it says a lot that several of the Word core team turned up to socialise with their readers, at an event that they hadn't organised - I'm only sorry I arrived too late to meet Fraser and Mark. Thanks to Andrew H for the warning that the first pub gets a bit "fighty" on a Friday evening! We moved on shortly afterwards.
What larks
count me in next time - I´d have joined you for this one but I´m in Barçelona and it´s a nightmare commute from here.
(I don´t think the ´ç´ is correct but I just wanted to use that key ¡¿)
The Faust Tapes
We wandered into a Krautrock discussion. We were trying to identify the 10" see through vinyl album with an X-ray of a hand printed on. It came in a polythene sleeve and retailed for a massive 49p.
This is The Faust Tapes. My first thought last night was Neu! but I can't find the image.
The Faust Tapes was suggested. I don't know if I'm conflating 2 memories here. I'm sure Faust went for 49p, but did the see through one? However Faust didn't do the album I was thinking of:
Any ideas?
Faust
The Faust Tapes was their third album. The one you were thinking of was the debut.
Oops I put this on the wrong thread
Lovely to see you all last night! It was really nice to put some faces to the log-ins, and to be bought pints of Fairport (!) by our own dear readers. Seventies, Fraser, Mark and I were genuinely touched. It makes the whole thing worthwhile - not that it's not worthwhile in the first place, but it makes it MORE worthwhile. Please let's do it again some time (and apologies to Twango for not saying goodbye but you had disappeared somewhere).
But the main question is... how are they managing to do a £1.69 pint in London? Wonders will never cease.
Devastated of course
;-) excellent night. Feeling slightly shaky this morning but the Fairport was marvellous as was the chat. Looking forward to the next one - Christmas do with the Love Trousers performing live?
Now that might get me to leave my Monnow Valley fastness ;-)
Who ate all the pies?
Thanks for the tip about Dunn's pies Andrew. I had one for lunch today. Just shows how something can be under your nose for years and you never see it.
late as usual
Unfortunately, I'm 5000 miles away, it didn't help that I didn't see the thread until this morning, still... I can't think of anything more alluring than a London pub on a Friday night, wish I could have been there. Hope it was great.
