Massive Festivals
What festivals are members of the massive attending this year?
I’ve never travelled away to a festival before, but next month I’m attending the “Indie Tracks” festival in the midlands, which combines music and steam trains! As well as watching various bands, you can travel about on trains to see different bands, some of whom, will play on the trains! I haven’t heard of many of the bands on the bill, apart from The Hidden Cameras, but expect it will be a great laugh!
In September, subject to good tent erection skills, I will be attending The Bingley Musical Festival , which will be preceded by a few pints of different Timothy Taylor beers in the local pub. Both are smallish festivals, but I’m looking forward to both and the opportunity to see new acts. Where are you heading?

One day in your life
I'm a day festival man now. See you at Wireless (Chemical Brothers day) and SW4 (Pendulum day).
Glastonbury 1997 ruined the whole camping thing for me. Don't ask.
Carry On Camping
I've never camped before, so best not know your horror story!
I was there.
I don't need to ask.
So was I.
Still got a rash and trench foot.
Glastonbury and Latitude
Looking forward to the latter rather more than the former this year, although the Massive's 'things to see' at Glastonbury (see threads passim) has reawakened my appetite!
If the Management are looking for an unpaid festival correspondent, in return for a backstage pass or two, I'm yer man... #shamelessfreeloadery
Steaming Free Reviews
Yes, I was thinking along the same lines (no pun intended) for the Indie Tracks festival. I’ll steam on ahead whilst I’m there no doubt and no doubt send a small review in, if I’m not too puffed out. If he doesn’t go off the rails on vodka and coke, my mate, should get on track and make a short film about the whole event.
I'll also be at Latitude
Only on the Sunday though. I'll be the one at the front screaming at Suede.
Other than that, Saturday at Wireless (Chemical Brothers et al) and I've been roped into 2000 Trees somewhere in Gloucestershire.
Latitude
where the music line-up is looking much better than last year.
Latitude
though I disagree about the lineup.
I might be at Bingley too, given that it is all of 2 miles down the road. Literally down my street. (No relation to David incidentally)
Problem with both is work that requires me to be in different countries either side of the festival. Which is a) tricky, and b) annoys the GLW (who quite reasonably points out that it reduces the fun if I can only arrive on Friday night and have to leave on Sunday night - but the bank manager insists).
Nick Drake
Does the annual Nick Drake gathering in Tanworth-in-Arden count? If so I'll be there 22/23rd July.
Drakefest?
Ooooh. Drakefest! You been before? Is it any good?
I have been to TiA off-season and always thought it would be a nice place to camp (in a tent).
Not been before
but people I know who have all said it's really good. Very low key and loose, but full of like minded people.
I only live 10 minutes away so I really have no excuse for not going to previous ones, but better late than never eh?
You are right about T IN A. It is a lovely village. On one of the evenings the acts perform in the church in which the Drake family plot is located. The village pub is great too!
Tent Erection Skills
TMFTL
Tent Performance
Let's hope I can get it up on the day!
Festivals = inner city apartments
The number of festivals this year seem greater than ever, dontcha think? Looks like a buy-to-let, pre-bust boom to me.
some of whom will play on the trains
Anyone else intrigued by how this will work.
Do they wander from carriage to carriage like a band of strolling minstrals, or are they just setting up in coach C and you can join them there. Has anyone told the people in the quiet coach about this?
There Is One In Keigthly this weekend

Training Coach
Not quite sure how it will work. I’ll guess they will have one coach
dedicated for bands, where they’ll play Ticket To Ride, Downtown Train,Last Train To Clarksville etc etc !
It should be the guard's van really
Glastonbury and Green Man
This year will be my 5th Glastonbury. I love it, there's so much there and (regardless of the regular criticism to the line-up I see) there's always something to see or do. I don't like the way most large festivals separate the camping from the stages, with security frisking you every time you want to pass between the two areas, but you don't get that with Glastonbury, which is why it will always be better than Leeds, V, T etc.
Green Man is my "small" festival of choice, though it's more than doubled in capacity since I've been going (every year since 2006, so this will be my 6th GM). A lovely setting Wales and generally the line up is to my taste.
I might go to a couple of day ones too if I get the chance, I went to a day of Bingley Music Live last year which was very nice.
Cropredy ahoy
I've skipped a couple of years, however this is my quality solo leisure time gift to myself this year. I shall be casting a weather eye over Fairport Convention, UB40, Seasick Steve, The Blockheads, The Home Service, Charlie Dore, Badly Drawn Boy, Horslips and The Coral. You can also park next to your tent, which saves all that tedious transferring half a hundredweight of camping gear two thirds of the way across the county. By dint of performing, I'll also be at a number of smaller, boutique festivals including Lazy Bishops in Farnham this weekend, Maverick (Melanie, Otis Lee Crenshaw) in July and Acorn Fayre in Yelden in September whwere some of Stackridge are supposed to be chipping in.
Womad
Never been. Really looking forward to a different festival experience.
One day at...
both Sonisphere and T in the Park (same weekend), and then Green Man and End Of The Road towards the end of the festival season.
The Electric Picnic
I never miss it
end of the road
taking the kids to their first festival and though it best to start smallish - and the line-up is cracking.
Midlake, John Grant, Joanna Newsome, Brakes, the Unthanks, Okkervil River and a shouty man in a bus stop will do nicely
You picked a good 'un
My 4th End Of The Road this year. This years headliners are probably the 3 I'm least interested in seeing, but there's some great other stuff on . As a location, and for the general vibe , it takes some beating.
End of the road
for me too, also my fourth visit. Not only taking senior daughter this year but also the rest of the tribe. I note M Ward has just been added to the line-up.
The Eden Sessions are great
Saw Supergrass and The Beta Band a few years back. It's a great venue - outdoors but intimate, relaxed, easy to get decent food and drinks and ideal as part of a holiday in Cornwall.
Going again this year for Fleet Foxes, The Bees and Villagers and we're taking our 5 month old daughter for her first gig (with baby ear defenders and standing at the back health and safety fans).
Supersonic
Went last year, loved it. Birmingham's Custard Factory, October, a bit nippy. Clanging noisiness, avant-rockness, Scorn, Secret Chiefs 3, Zombi, Zu93. Staying in a hotel. Definite plus.
This will be my first Supersonic
after years of saying, 'I must go', so really looking forward to it all. Just hoping they add Cut Hands to the line up. Might see you there? And yes the hotel is a definite plus
Cut Hands
is an IMMENSE piece of work. Fantastic stuff. Would love to meet up over a pint and a bit of Zombi.
Absolutely Grant,
was actually quite shocked at how damn good it is, after hearing that Bennett had been tinkering around with this for the last few years, I feared the worst. Needn't have worried, it is possibly the most original and exciting piece or work i've heard for many a year.
Would definitely be up for a pint, we'll arrange something nearer the time.
Regards
My stag weekend is taking place at a festival.
This is either a really great idea for a stag weekend or a really terrible way of ruining a festival.
Also trying out Aeon in Devon and very very tempted by The Big Chill but probably won't be able to afford it / get tickets in time.
Volunteering
I'm not currently working, so I've volunteered to work at both Latitude & Big Chill. You have to agree to work 3 eight hour shifts over the working weekend, which runs from the Thursday until the Monday.
In return you get a ticket to the festival, with camping etc in the staff area. Not quite sure how it's gonna work out, or even exactly what I'll be doing, but thought it was worth a pop.
If I survive the weekends, I'll report back.
I did the same
at the short-lived Phoenix festival in 1993? I remember guarding two gates and directing people near some toilets for my 8 hr shifts.
Advice? Know who you want to see on each day and try to work out your shifts around that. If you can, get the early, but you'll probably have to do one evening session.
Good luck!
I am doing this too
First time steward at Port Eliot Festival. Have loved it more each year I've been and wanted to give something back.
Please do.
Would love to hear how that works out.
It's Belladrum for me
This will be my third time. I swore last year would be my last as I hate camping, and we go with a big bunch of friends, who I love, but who NEVER FECKING SLEEP. But this year we have a camper van so we can go and join the party at their bit, then sleep in comfort very, very far away. Result. At least I hope so. I will report back.
