He played guitar on this.

A Great Man

Not only did he play beautifully on that, he got a writing credit too.

Another of the many he played on and helped to write was this one:

(Marvin Gaye - One More Heartache)

Smokey owes him a great deal

For me this song eclipses even Tracks Of My Tears. It was co written by Tarplin and the guitar intro is one of the finest things known to man

The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage

A Brilliant Moment on a Lovely Night

A few years ago, Mrs Mind bought tickets to see Smokey Robinson in Vancouver as a birthday present. As I grew up with little opportunities to see the greats, I often go with as much a sense of obligation as any musical expectations. After all, people like Smokey have brought a great deal of joy to my life, and if this is my first opportunity to offer (at the very least) a bit of applause, so be it.

Still, there was a collective hush when Robinson shuffled onstage; we seemed withered and frail. If you were to be unkind, you might have recalled Redd Foxx's Fred Sanford character. Still, when he sang - I can quite say I heard violins, but he was in surprisingly fine form and clearly energised by what he does.

The evening was overabundant with hits, but I was still impressed when he stop to speak about the experience of writing and recording the material, all while the guitarist was quietly chiming the intro to Tracks of My Tears. Robinson then introduced his writing partner, Marv Tarplin, to a grateful round of applause. Really, it couldn't have been better.
