Martyn Joseph

When:
14th October 2010
Where:
Errigle Inn, Belfast
Comments:
Martyn still doesn't get the recognition his music deserves, which is a pity since he has more than atoned for the over-produced major label years of the early nineties with a series of gritty yet warm acoustic albums. His newest "Under Lemonade Skies" was heavily previewed tonight during a much mellower solo set which, given the economic times we are in, surprised me a bit. Some of the new songs, such as "Lonely like America" are the widest of widescreen in their literary scope and political punch. I've known many first-timers come to a Joseph fans and become converts through songs like that one.
The Audience:
Whooping at the beginning of songs in an acoustic setting always p***es me off, and why do some people think intimate venues give you more of an opportunity to treat the artist like a personal jukebox. Martyn's so obliging that he gave in as well.
Food & Drink:
Standard range of beers and ales. Good sausage and mash downstairs according to Martyn.
It Made Me Think...:
Despite the obvious artistic freedom..how tiring it must be to have to do everything yourself as a solo performing artist with your own label. Spotted Martyn reading Pro Tools for dummies just after the soundcheck.
