Martin Clunes - respect!
Posted by mojoworking on 20 September 2011 - 12:57pm.
Martin Clunes was on Desert Island Discs recently and not only did he pick a Frank Zappa record (Doreen from the album You Are What You Is), but he also said he’d gladly swap the Complete Works of Shakespeare (a given on DID) for the Complete Works of Zappa.
Whadda guy!

Well, who'd have thought it!
...the new series of 'Doc Martin' is two episodes in on UK TV at the mo - fantastic stuff. I'm a huge fan of the show, but thought Clunes took his character's persona perhaps a tad too far in the last series. But with this one the balance is back on track - nothing makes me laugh out loud as much as the Doc!
Clunes
seems like a decent bloke. Plus, he's rather more nimble and gifted as an actor than he's given credit for. The fact he's a Zappa fan is a bonus!
Agreed, I'm not normally a fan of 'nice' comedy drama
but Doc Martin is wonderful. There's something ever so slightly 'skewed' about it - it's not 'dark' comedy by any means but I always sense an underlying unease about it, like everyone is on the edge of breaking down.
Impressed that Clunes is a Zappa fan though. Good man!
Like Mick Karn and Pino Palladino...
Martin Clunes has played bass for Gary Numan
That sounds like a euphemism...
...is it?
No, statement of fact
September 1998... Martin Clunes was filming "Hunting Venus" which Mr Numan also appeared in. Gary was playing at Shepherds Bush Empire... Martin joined him on stage and played bass on "Cars"
And he does a lot of good work for "charidee"...
He is adored by local's down in Dorset where he has open fetes in his back garden during the summer with all proceeds going to the local children's hospice Julia's House.
My old mum has been a couple of times. Says he's a lovely man.
Work of art
Going back three or four years I saw the Gilbert & George exhibition at Tate Modern. Pretentious tat, but I was sure that among a portrait of a bunch of young men Martin Clunes' face was quite prominent.
Is this a grisly secret from his past, or had something been slipped into my tea?
