The Tote is a classic sticky carpet , grungy rock n roll pub in Melbourne. Its foreshadowed demise is due to new licensing laws that require security to be hired due to violence at nightclubs. Of course the nightclubs are not rock venues and there has been minimal evidence of problems at live music venues.
But the point of this blog entry is to highlight that the responsible minister has been called backed from holidays to discuss what can be done to save this local institution.

Has the half moon died?
I heard that it had managed to stay open as there had been some kind of buy out by a group. Maybe someone can confirm this?
It's been saved
Or it had been according to a newsletter I receive from a band who play there regularly.
I tacked it on to the end of that thread a few days ago.
I'll do so again here, mate.
'Firstly, the wonderful news is that the Half Moon in Putney has been saved! It
took a tremendous effort from the owners, staff, bands and fans to persuade
the brewery where their best interests are, so enormous thanks to all of you
who bombarded Young's Brewey with indignant emails! For once, we've been
listened to - if only the government would do the same.... The Moon will make
some changes, have a revamp, and will soon be back to its former glory as one
of the UK's best live music venues'
I'm nothing to do with the Half Moon or anyone that plays there so things may have changed again since for whatever reason.
I hope not anyway.
Richie at The Tote
I met Richie who used to run the Tote once at a Soundtrack of Our Lives gig in Sweden, great guy - covered in tattoos of his favourite album covers...!
I always kept an eye-out on the venue and swore that I would visit one day if I ever went to Australia. I hope it survives.
As for the Half Moon - didn't Harry Hill play a benefit gig for the venue there recently with his band accompanying the actor Tom Courtney...? Or was that some strange fevered dream I had...?
