Maradona - genius or villain?

rocker43's picture

that recent post about Cruyff got me reminiscing about 1986 and the infamous Maradona goals - one born out of bare faced cheating, the other a result of the man's sheer speed and dribbling genius. Never has a player provoked so much hatred and admiration in equal measure. What are the Word Massive's memories of this match? I watched it on telly with my Dad and we couldn't believe our eyes - both goals. Here is the second one.

Peter Reid

choosing to play in concrete boots didn't help.

Mixed feelings

Maradona was one of only a few players who could be called a genius, and he provided us with many moments of brilliance.

The linesman in the '86 game however wasn't, and didn't.

A footballing genius..

but rubbish at everything else.

That was real genius

And it was something he could do again and again. Shame about the cheating and the marching powder.

This, on the other hand, is also a work of genius.

Roberto Carlos could never hope to repeat that in a month of sundays. So he did this instead:

Anyway. This is my favourite goal EVER and it brings a massive swell of joy everytime I see it.

None of which really answers the original question, which I think is probably genius, but fatally flawed.

his hand of god goal was

his hand of god goal was brilliant - i laughed out loud and almost got glassed in the alehouse by us - a riot of wild west proportions then ensued at the final whistle and five of my mates got stuck down - the next best england losers game was the germany semi in italia 90 - funny as fuck! grown men crying and the worst football/pop tune ever

can't wait for this summer's jngofest - the media still haven't got over that bob sled woman from 'team GB' so imagine how unbearable lineker and co will be in south africa

As any fule kno

*This* is the greatest world cup goal ever

Sorry, what was the question again?

I do love that goal

but I think the legend is helped enormously by the camera angle there. Sure, it's a fantastic run from defence, but the camera is in such a position that it appears that he flies in from nowhere. If you zoomed out a bit, the goal wouldn't be quite as good.

As a kid it was all about Pele and Cruyff

Looking back now...

Maradona.

For his ability and his 'narrative'. From nearly drowning in a cesspool in the slums where he grew up to becoming a deity in Argentina and winning the World Cup on his own. A nose full of gak and left knee pumped full of cortisone.

Can't find the

Cruyff thread you mention. Could you post a link?

Just stick Johan Cruyff in the search bar above right

Its an excellent thread. Started by one of the most erudite, witty etc

Cheating

ALL footballers cheat. The difference is that in England we try to claim that our footballers don't and in Argentina a good piece of cheating (of which Maradona's handball is at the pinnacle) is celebrated as much as a good piece of skill.

I think the latter is the more healthy.

I believe it seen as 'picking the pocket'

The dynamic being 'football belongs to the poor and disposessed, and it is a symbolic act of defiance of the bourgoisie/dominant powers'

Or summat.

Maradona

as said before genius and villain one of the best three of all time IMO with Pele and Zidane. Zidane was the best of all time IMO what do the rest of you think ?

D.Green | 2 March 2010 - 12:15pm

who really was the Best?

Easy. George.

Well along with Pele, Puskas, Cruyff, Maradona, Zidane and Eric Cantona.

then below that you could throw in Platini, Zico, Gullit, Paolo Rossi, Dalglish, Greavsie, de Stefano, Jackie Milburn, Tom Finney, Kempes, Law, Brady, Rush and Gazza.

and below that everyone else who ever put on a pair of boots, including Becks and Rooney.

I never rated Maradona as one of the greatest

OK he scored a decent goal or two, but he's certainly not in the same league as George Best or Jimmy Johnstone for dribbling or speed. And he's absolutely nowhere near Pele, or Bobby Charlton for goal scoring talent.

And Madonna's got better legs!

Maradona - Genius.

The best player ever by a country mile. Singlehandedly took a poor Argentina side to the World Cup and dragged the whole of the poverty ridden south of Italy to two scudetto's and UEFA Cups with Napoli.

Maradona, Platini, Best, Pele, Cruyff.
