Mali - music heart of the "World"?
Posted by badger_king on 13 September 2009 - 1:44pm.
Ok, so we all know that music from Mali is amazing right now. World-class, so to speak.
There are the obvious heroes (Ali Farka Toure, Toumani Diabate, Oumou Sangare, Tinariwen-ish). There are the lesser known people.
I just thought people might want to discover some new music. So I will give this song a massive thumbs up from me, and is available on the "Rough Guide to the music of Mali" which is a superb compilation, well worth investing in.
Sort of a world music version of "Summertime".
Also I strongly recommend checking out Ali Farka Toure. The man was a legend.
That is all. Any other favourites?

This is a *superb* compilation...
It doesn't exclusively feature musicians from Mali, but is an essential purchase.
Sahara: Blues of the Desert
Tinariwen
are not from Mali although they are very good.
vaguely
Aren't they sort of vaguely nomadic from around the borders of Mali?? They were on the rough guide, and their wikipedia page lists it as one of their birthplaces.

Rokia Traore
Her album released last year was pretty damn good.
Salif Keita
I can heartily recommend 'Moffou'
Seconded
And even more so, "Soro", one of the greatest albums of all.
Djelimady Tounkara is wonderful
Djelimady was a guitarist with the Super Rail Band whose members also included the magnificent Salif Keita and Mory Kante.
I've seen him in concert a couple of times - with the American Bill Frissell and on his own.
He's had a couple of solo cd's out but can also be heard on the Super Rail Band stuff and also the Mandekalou records that came out over the past few years. The Mandekalou stuff is essentially a Malian supergroup formed as part of a cultural movement to recognise the history of the Mande peoples (I think).
Mamadou Barry: "Niyo"
If you don't mind hopping over the southern border from Mali into Guinea, I can heartily recommend "Niyo", the new album by Mamadou Barry. It's quite splendiforous in a rather marvellous sort of way. Anyone who likes Orchestra Baobab would go for it, I reckon.
Are there a Malian equivalents of
Paul Young
Laurence from Denim
Chas and Dave
