Madness on BBC4 tonight

Gauntlet's picture

Just a quick public service announcement - noticed BBC4 are showing the Glastonbury set at 9pm, then more Madness related stuff including the film of their latest album. Might be of interest to some here...

Good

Australia will have beaten us by then in the one dayer as I remember the Glasto set was something of a storming greatest hits set

Liberty of Norton Folgate

watched a bit of this. Quite entertaining. Some vaudevillian grotesqueries added a nice atmosphere to the music, although I switched off after the first 3 songs. I got a bit bored. Shame really. I wanted to like it, as loads of people on here had recommended it, but it just didn't click with me.

Oh well. I tried.

Yes

tend to agree.

Always have a soft spot for the Nutty Seven but - like so many acts - they have a particular moment.

The run of singles in the late 70s/early 80s is as strong as The Kinks or The Who.

However, I have tried to like "Norton Felgate" on the recommendation of many - but find it all a little uninspired.

Not quite as bad as the similarly lauded "Duckworth Lewis Bollocks"

Yes, I did the same

I think I had probably reached my Madness tipping point after really enjoying the Glastonbury and Young Guns programme. I did think the new/unfamiliar songs (from Norton Felgate?) assimilated well within the Glastonbury set.

Conceptual Madness

People usually get overexcited about concept albums these days, especially if the theme is relatively unrepresented in music, e.g. cricket.

The better songs on "Norton Folgate" are towards the end - it's a very good album, and an interesting approach, but I'm not yet sure it's as quite as good as it's cracked up to be. The song "We Are London" just sounds like it was commissioned by Boris.

I love the early Madness footage from "Take It Or Leave It" - a bunch of ragamuffins and street urchins who happened to click musically.
