Madge mimes

fortuneight's picture

The much hyped half time show at the Superbowl seemed to be heavy on auto tune and lip synch and light on entertainment unless Madge hoofing around on a variety of OTT sets floats your boat. It sank mine.

Sounds fab......

Madonna on stage at the Superbowl.

All bets are off, get on the blower to Frank Skinner immediately.
I've got contribution for 'Room 101'.

Madonna in miming shock

That's her act isn't it? Since when was she known as a great live singer? certainly the last place I'd look for an authentic, raw live vocal.

1
Dr Volume | 6 February 2012 - 10:38am

It's also the superbowl

The E Street Band mimed when they did it. It's what the event requires.

4
Fraser Lewry | 6 February 2012 - 10:39am

Yup

the Boss mimed. Didn't stop it being damned entertaining.

I'm not familiar with sports but isn't the Superbowl all about snacks, beer, million dollaradverts and Bristish Bulldog? Its one big party with the musical act there to play their hits and get an I-tunes bonus. Hey its cynical but this is showbiz people! Tits n teeth

Didn't see Madge as I wanted to watch 'The Cricklewood Greats' on BBC4. That was bloody marvellous

American Sports coverage

It's so OTT it's actually impressive. I always watch the Daytona 500, and the brouhaha is unreal. Military fly-pasts, fireworks, prayers to God, country & western superstars belting out the national anthem whilst the drivers hold their children, thank yous to the police and miltary....etc

If they tried it at an English event, we'd all just sit sneering. "What the f*ck's this? Get the footy on."

I agree

I've only been to a couple of US college footbal games and I love the razzamatazz. The one we went to last year had the home team (I lost count of how many there actually were of them!) charging out onto the pitch in a huge cloud of dry ice. On it's own that's not much cop but they were chasing out a cavalier on horseback. There are the cheerleaders throughout the game, the fireworks when the home side scores and the large marching band fills a section of the stand and plays little stings when something significant happens. The band also entertains at half time (I was particularly impressed by the fact that they have a Bass guitarist that has to have his amp on a trolley that gets wheeled around the pitch as the band march into different configurations).
Is it just football that they do this for? I've been to several MLB games and there's nothing that even comes close.

College Sports?

Well, the top schools will get 70,000+ to their games. It's an industry that simply defies any kind of belief. Successful coaches are deified in a quite ridiculous way (see: Paterno, Joe)

Baseball is America's civilized sport - I see it treated the same way that cricket is venerated in England.

I refereed a rugby game once at West Point. Honor Guard. Anthems. All superbly well organized. But no game ball. Where's the game ball? Look up. Being delivered by the Parachute team from a Blackhawk.
This was rugby. Not even an NCAA sport.

Personally? There's a fine line, and it's probably somewhere between the overwrought American way and the 'understatement' in Britain. I'm at the far end of the British spectrum. I want to turn up, see the game, and go. If I wanted to go see cheerleaders, I'd go see cheerleading competitions.

What's wrong

with a good old fashioned college marching band playing traditional American tunes?

Carolina Crown 2011 Encore - Karn Evil 9

1
Beany | 6 February 2012 - 3:58pm

Nope, sorry Beany

Had to Google "Karn Evil 9" to get the point of that post. I'm increasingly certain that I'm not in the demographic group to be a Word reader. I'd never even heard of the Mahivishtu Whatsit Orchestra until a couple of weeks ago. I've still not *heard* them yet...

1
Red Umpire | 6 February 2012 - 4:07pm

Wow

wish I'd seen that. Of course one should expect no less from West Point. They have got the choppers after all.

On the deification of JoePa well, he did coach for 46 years, had more wins than any coach and only died like a couple of weeks ago. So I can see why he's on your mind right now. For further information, see 'Knute Rockne, All American'. It's probably playing on Turner Classic right now.

MyAmericanMate | 6 February 2012 - 4:03pm

Or Bobby Knight

Or Mike the Duke coach.

All part of the same malaise.

College sports is not college sports. It's semi pro

sitheref2409 | 6 February 2012 - 6:47pm

Not everyone mimes

(The Who - Superbowl 2010 Halftime Show)

Although you could argue it may have been better if they did

0
fortuneight | 6 February 2012 - 4:53pm

phoney

Popular music is showbiz and artifice, but I really wish Madge would give up now. She tries so hard to remain a star, but totally lives on her past (See Stones, Rolling; Who, The; Clapton, Eric, etc). She fakes being artistic, being concerned, being rock (HAH!), being sexy. Once she was these things - but after the tour that led to "In Bed with Madonna" movie she lost it to me; "Ray of Light" was a great William orbit album with ehr as guest singer. I saw a clip of David Bowie doign "Lust for Life" in the style of Nine Inch nails on a 1996 tour, and it was similarly forced. I am delighted to see that Mr Bowie has retired with some dignity.

Vincent | 6 February 2012 - 10:51am

Madonna is like the Germans...

... never discount her. Round about "Erotica" everyone thought she'd lost the plot and before you knew it tunes like "Ray Of Light" and "Beautiful Stranger" started to appear. She'll have some good stuff out soon I'm sure.

ganglesprocket | 6 February 2012 - 11:44am

That'll be a first...

Relax Massive

Next year they're going to have CJ Stoneking playing a tea-chest.

6
Spartacus Mills | 6 February 2012 - 11:46am

Yeah!

Yeah, Madonna, you're not authentic AND you're old. Fuck off, witch.

(Is this right?)

10
JoLean | 6 February 2012 - 12:11pm

Almost.....

......actually, she's not old enough.
But the rest of it - spot on.

Miming? The biggest gig in the world

and they mime? That's of a bit of a con from an artist. Shocking. Anyhoo, while British viewers were watching a parade of Americans skipping up and down and bumping into each other over on BBC 301 the British women's hockey team played in their first major final. We lost 1-0 to the Argies.

0
MrTaylor | 6 February 2012 - 1:09pm

Indeed we did

I was gutted for Beth Storry (the GK) as she played well throughout the tournament and made several fantastic saves in the final, but her one error led to the Argentinian goal. Who'd be a goalie?

Ah well. First ever silver for GB women and plenty of time to build on the obvious positives from Champions' Trophy before the Olympics.

Red Umpire | 6 February 2012 - 1:17pm

Superbowl

Not a proper sports event, is it? I went to a baseball game once at the camden yards in Baltimore; it was more about snacks, animated graphics and watching the game (and i use the term advisedly) on the screens. The last football match i went to (a second division play-off at Wembley) involved avoidign a 20-foot wide puddle of urine from the gents that had poured out into the main corridor), £3 dogfood pies, and a lot of drunks who couldn't have been more homosocial if they had been in pink trouser suits.

0
Vincent | 6 February 2012 - 1:39pm

Meatloaf

didn't mime at the Aussie equivalent.
He was sh*te,sure, but he was live sh*te.

What's not to love?

Not being a football fan, I skipped the game and the only thing I watched was the half-time show. When those Egyptian guys came stomping across the field to the beat of Vogue, I for one was laughing my ass off. The Superbowl+ Madonna = Over the Top. Whether she was lip synching is sort of beside the point.

The weak point, unfortunately, was her new song. I felt a bit sorry for Nicky Minaj and MIA who were just glorified cheerleaders waving their pom pons for Madonna. No wonder MIA flipped off the home audience. She was trying to regain a shred of self-respect. :) But the closer -- Like a Prayer -- was excellent. Great song and I loved the "wicked witch" disappearing at the end.

It all made no sense and was faintly ridiculous but for 20 minutes, I was entertained.

1
Lott | 6 February 2012 - 2:29pm

What's not to love?

The phrase, 'What's not to love?"

I HATE IT!

I liked the No1 hit, Vogue though. Her finest moment.

0
Zanti Misfit | 6 February 2012 - 2:48pm

'What's Not to Love' got to do with it?

Well just like Madonna, I can't please everyone with my schtick. (insert wink icon here)

0
Lott | 6 February 2012 - 3:20pm

Sorry I wasn't having a pop, Lott.

I just can't stand that phrase. Gives me hives. Like when people used to say NOT! at the end of sentences in 1990.

I'd 'get a life' but I detest that twenty two year old phrase too.

Complaining about miming is missing the point by a mile

You're judging the show by the criteria of rock n roll --
it's a spectacle, more akin to seeing Starlight Express than seeing The Fall at the Lesser Free Trade Hall.

The lights are way more inportant than the music.
This is not a criticism. I thought it was pretty good. Loved the bloke on the slackline. Didn't love LFMAO. Loved Nicky Minaj a lot, as usual.

The thing that struck me was that the halftime show of a beer drinkin' pickup drivin' macho testoterone fest was so informed by the gay aesthetic.

0
Runcible | 6 February 2012 - 4:49pm

just seen the video

never mind Madge, the trumpeters were miming! scandal!

0
Glenbervie | 13 February 2012 - 8:28pm

You're missing the bigger picture

It was nothing less than Illuminati Satanism in America's living rooms.

0
Brookster | 13 February 2012 - 8:41pm

Well...

...if i remember back to a central theme of the Like A Virgin video, back in 1984/85, it was 'Jesus was black and I shagged him.' Your squeaky voice dude up there may have her bang to rights.

Hurrah
