Mac OSX Lion

Slotbadger's picture

Has been released today. Around 20 quid for an AppStore download. Lengthy review, favourable, in the Grauniad.

I'm always wary of diving into the first edition of a major upgrade. I know I am a complete klutz when it comes to this kind of thing, but the promise of blazing-fast new system and lovely new icons soon vanishes into a hell of forgotten passwords, reluctant applications and lost files.

Has anyone upgraded to Lion yet and if so - how are you finding it?

I have no idea

but Bob says to tell you he likes it. I think he means the software.

Hand aloft

I upgraded yesterday and, aside from a little annoyance of the iMac forgetting I had wifi (fixed after some frantic Googling and a reboot), it's promising.

It's not a huge departure from Snow Leopard but some of the new iPhone/iPad-like features are good (being able to swipe between screens/open apps; Autosave and Versions; Mission Control).

A tip though. If you have more than one Mac to update, you can bypass having to download Lion each time for each computer by burning a disc from your first download. However, you must make this disc BEFORE you install Lion. I didn't, so now I have to download the 4GB bugger all over again for the laptop!

More on that here: http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9218547/How_to_make_a_bootable_Li...

Did it last night

Seemed to go fine. Had a tiny play this morning an email is good and the launchpad and apps screen are neat as well.

Took a while to download and takes about 35 mins to update but other than that, it looks good.

Many thanks chaps

Anyone experienced issues with Snow Leopard-compatible MS Office applications running in Lion?

Not yet

Did mine last night

A couple of minor niggles, mostly connected to the fact that I'm running XCode for the IOS5 beta and version I had for Snow Leopard doesn't work on Lon. That will be remedied tonight when I do the Lion-compatible installs.

Otherwise, fine. Not that struck on Launchpad but I don't mind Mission Control's rejig of space, for example.

Yep....

I updated last night. All seemed to run very smoothly and using on my work notebook today had no issues apart from the RSA secureID software won't run (I don't actually use that often and can bypass by using the app on the iPhone anyway).

MS Office et al run smoothly although have not yet been updated to the new full screen mode.

As stated above, if you have multiple Macs you don't need to re download for each. You don't even need to burn a disc, just copy the installer to a flash drive - its downloaded to your applications folder. You have to do before you install though as the install deletes.

Like the general appearance and some of the new features - not too fussed on launchpad, but it may be a grower. Only thing that confused me was the scrolling - its per an iPhone / iPad where if you pull your finger down you go to the top of the document / web page (i.e. you pull the document down) rather than the traditional way of scroll wheels. You can change this though.

Rosetta / FreeHand

Hurrah! Another FreeHand user! I'm not alone.

Might be a long wait, according to FreeFreehand.org, unless Apple release Rosetta, or someone else creates something similar.

Parchey Bridge | 21 July 2011 - 7:34pm

You've got a long wait.

There will be no Rosetta support in Lion.

Rosetta doesn't just comprise of the PPC to Intel conversion software. There's also PPC versions of all Frameworks and library components that PPC based applications could need. Lion has removed all of the legacy PPC code, so you're stuck.

The Sonos Controller

is currently non functional for Lion but apart from that it looks fine so far.

Volume Logic plugin

Had to happen at some point but either Lion or the update in iTunes (probably the iTunes update) 'broke' the Volume Logic plugin. Now I remember how poor the built in equaliser is :(

I'd love to but

Pro Tools won't be compatible until 2015.
OK that may be a slight exaggeration but it'll take a while.

Why do I need snow leopard

Before I buy the lion download upgrade? Probably a stupid question but I am no Mac expert.
