Love, lip-service...can’t stand

eddie g's picture

What are the musical genres that generally fall into the above categories for you I wonder. For what it’s worth, here’s mine-

LOVE- Beatles ( well, it’s a genre all of its own really isn’t it? ), Bubblegum, Punk, Powerpop, Old Country, Groove-orientated jazz ( i.e. the type which adheres strictly to the mathematical formula tune/doodle/ back to tune ), Blues ( 1940s through to late 60s pre-dominantly ), Psychedelia, Comedy/Novelty, C86 indie, Prog ( especially Canterbury prog ), 70s funk, Motown, Rockabilly.

LIP-SERVICE- Ska, Two-Tone, Reggae.

CAN’T STAND- Musical theatre, tuneless jazz ( doodle/doodle/more fucking doodle ), ‘Alt’ Country, Electronica, Disco, Dance ( that goes boom boom boom and has a middle eight of boom boom boom followed by three days of boom boom boom ).

OK...

I'm a bit suspicious of genres, since any one is likely to contain a hodload of shite (and even some genres I generally hate will contain some gems), but still. Fun times.

LOVE: Pop; electro pop; baroque pop; hard rock; grunge (for the want of a better word); heavy metal; groove metal; thrash metal; old-skool hip hop; conscious hip hop; early gangsta rap; dub; dubstep; 80s and 90s house.

(also, within "classical" music: early choral, renaissance and baroque, plus plenty of early 20th century stuff).

LIP-SERVICE: punk. I like some of the bands, but hate all the year-zero bollocks and all the obsession with class that came with it.

CAN'T STAND: Prog.

I share your suspicions

of genres and there are blind spots for me too even within my trusted zones. To be honest if someone planted an AK47 to my head and told me to differentiate between hip-hop, dubstep and garage I'd be an Osama-shaped heap on the divan before you could say 'gangsta'.

Well....

...it's like this. Hip hop in its truest sense is MCing (rapping) over a DJd accompaniment. Garage is a forerunner of dubstep, featuring a sort of syncopated, skipping electronic beat and often stretched/distorted vocals. Dubstep is like a much more stoned version of 2-step garage, and is more soundtracky and dark sounding - less aimed at the dancefloor.

Not that you care. ;-)

Quite right.

But thanks anyway Bob. Anytime you need help with the finer points of Prog let me know sir.

SHIT.

Forgot Motown/Stax/Chess and US pre-punk in the LOVE column. Idiot me.

I apologize to you unreservedly for my year zero/class bollocks

on the "1976 punk" thread Bob.

Things got said, feelings got hurt, lampshades got (metaphorically) tossed against sturdy doorframes.

In the spirit of the fluffy, recipesharing Massive oligarchy I can only beg your forgiveness.

I feel clean again....

And by the way...

I love a bit of everything.

Generally pay lip service to Indie and formless, doodly jazz.

Physically bridle at hip-hop, opera and what passes for soul music these days.

Oh bloody hell!

Apology absolutely not needed! We're all grown-ups, and if I was still upset about that more than 5 minutes after it happened, I'd need some life lessons.

Let's have a moratorium on any apology more than 24 hours after the original spat, shall we?

Appreciate the thought, nonetheless, but it's long forgotten. :-)
