Lost now found - one great rock guitarist

I'm no guitar expert, but I went to see the heroic Edwyn Collins gig last night (which was a great show) & was absolutely blown away by Roddy Frame's guitar playing.

He sensitively added what seemed like every conceivable style of guitar playing to the songs - from picking, to wah wah funk to rock out - without ever becoming over conspicuous. He even managed a fabulous copy of James Kirk's terrible playing on early Orange Juice singles.

What's more he did so whilst dancing in a very 80's way as he played. Which was worth the admission price alone.

Can somebody please add him to the pantheon.

Oh - and Edwyn was brave and funny and surprisingly great throughout the show during which he was forced to sit and sing. He clearly still finds speaking difficult but his singing was almost back to normal. And when he got stuck into Blue Boy and Rip It Up he did so with real power. Over a couple of sneaky halves later, both my brother and I later admitted to a tear in our eyes - not from feeling sorry for him, but out of admiration for the triumph of human spirit and guts over adversity.

For me...

Roddy Frame and Johnny Marr were the most interesting guitar players to emerge in the 1980s. I suppose I should also include The Edge, but U2 piss me off these days, so I'm not going to.

No question about it,

Roddy has always impressed me. The solo in the middle of this is just perfect:

Agree

Roddy has always been a top player - I remember seeing him in The Tube and being amazed that one of the new fey foppish pop bands had such a great player since most of them seemed to have started by perfecting the pose and the haircut and worrying about the music later. Then on a little show highlighting songwriters, he played with (I think) Neil Finn and Graham Gouldman and again contributed fantastically inventive and controlled guitar parts and solos. His solo albums are excellent too - "Surf" and "Western skys".

Edwyn In The Observer Magazine

Edwyn was featured in The Observer magazine Sunday just gone. Ally at DustySevens blog (in the blogroll to the right) has the page featured. There are some moments in there that brought a tear to the eye.

And Roddy Frame....one of my all time above all else favourite singles is Walk Out To Winter. It's different to the album version and features some of the best guitar playing I think Roddy has ever done. But it's also not available anywhere these days. It's a crime, I tell you, a crime!

:)
