Lookalikes and Nepotism - a hybrid blog!
Posted by Richard Raftery on 22 October 2008 - 2:10pm.
Is it just me or does Carol Thatcher now bear a striking resemblance to Sir Jimmy Saville? She often crops up on 'The One Show' speaking in a very peculiar voice and managing to make every item she presents as turgid as, well, a very, very, turgid thing indeed.
And, on a related topic, how exactly did she get that gig? Natural talent combined with beauty, experience and intellect you may well respond but, could there be another reason to do with......?
Are there any others on telly who seem to have washed up there by way of being well-connected? I think I know the answer but go on anyway - let's name a few names!

Mark Durden-Smith. Nuff said.
The future's bright...
... the future's Judith Chalmers.
I rather liked that .....
....jolly double barreled MTV jock, son of an MP. Eddie Something. Not Lockjaw-Davis.
Where he now?
Eddy Temple-Morris

I believe this is the one you mean.
BoJo's pater...
... Stanley Johnson, in a role-reversal sort of way. Helped Boris's sister get along, too.
Same for Harry Enfield's father.
it's not Jimmy it's Jurgen
In the news this morning
Richard Littlejohn's son works as a press officer for the Tories.
And didn't both Paul Morley's and Roger Alton's daughters write for the Observer Music Monthly in the recent past?
If this spreads I could shortly find myself the bursar of a Hampshire sixth form college without the relevant experience!
What about...
...Claudia Winkleman (but I like her, regardless)
Peaches Geldof
Giles Coren
Victoria Coren (but I like her, etc)
Kelly Osbourne
Jack Osbourne
Sharon Osbourne
Gabby Logan
Colleen McLoughlin
Winkleman
I presume she is Davina Macoll's daughter/sister? She apes her in every way, but is worse if that is possible.
She's...
...Eve Pollard's daughter - which I imagine wasn't a hindrance in her early career.
Shame...
Far more fun if she'd been Su Pollard's daughter
Hope your dad wasn't T G Nicholson esq?
A long time latterly of Eastbourne. Or was it GDN. Known by his initials. Geography.
Nope, not one of my lot
Now my Uncle jack over in Hollywood on the other hand...
I look like my father...
... (that came as a relief to the milk-man) and work with my father. Should I therefore be banned for criticisng others for benefiting from nepotism?
I think it's been said before
it's the frequency of the nepotism that may be increasing and also doubts about the quality of the people getting jobs on the basis of family ties.
Didn't I see the son of Edmonson & Saunders...
...on BBC's Glastonbury coverage?
Vine and Rantzen
Was shocked to recently learn that......Jeremy Vine is David Vine's son.
I was also p-ed off when on that Family Tree programme Esther Rantzon said her father was a senior suit at the BBC. When That's Life was on, she was promoted as a 'humble BBC secretary plucked from obscurity to front new TV show'. Bollocks was she. Who Does She Think She Is? We f-ing know who she was!
Er, actually, no
Jeremy Vine isn't David Vine's son, but I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered he was Tim Vine's brother, while accidentally watching Celebrity Fame Academy.
The dog sat on the remote control, I presume?
That happens to me on occasions - and I end up watching QVC...
Butchers sons become
Butchers sons become butchers, and journalists' offspring become journalists. Get used to it, people. There's nothing new about nepotism in the industry (Dimblebys, anyone?)
Speaking as a journalist (maths teacher's son from Hull, if you must know), I've worked alongside a number of people who had famous parents. The bad ones didn't last long, and the good ones would have made it anyway. They probably wouldn't have made it so quickly, but then, that's the nature of this imperfect world we live in. Life's too short to bear those sort of grudges.
PS if we're doing lookalikes, take a look at Ruth Lea of the Institute of Economic Affairs next time she's on News At Ten. She's a dead ringer for Simon Amstell.
And why not
I was googling Barry Norman's daughter. Was it Emma? She became a film critic (surprise, surprise) following in her father's footsteps. Whatever happened to her?
Instead I found something more fascinating. Barry Norman Pickled Onions. Yes that's right. Hot and spicy.
