London's Best Record Stores?

David Wright's picture

I'm heading down to London on Wednesday to catch some of the Ashes on Friday. Inbetween times, I'm hoping to have a browse and possibly make some purchases in some of the citys record/CD stores. Normally I just tend to end up at the record shops in Soho, are there an other shops worth exploring in the capital? I'm open to all areas, I don't mind heading out of the capital either, if a shop is worth a visit. Thanks in anticipation.

A personal favourite is

Minus Zero Records on Blenheim Palace Road, just off Portobello Road, down near the Ladbrooke Grove end. Small shop but knowledgeable staff and tasty rarities. The two guys who run it fell out over something (i've tried to find out what but to no avail) so they have halved the shop with their stock on either side. Particularly good on 60's garage n pop.

There a couple of others round there worth hitting too: Rough Trade, Honest Jons and Exotica etc.

While you're in the Notting Hill area the many Music and Video Exchange shops along Notting Hill Gate Road can be overpriced but there are juicy bits to be had.

Ta

Many thanks for that, think I'll try Minus Zero Records. Do you know what the nearest Tube station will be?
I ventured into Notting Hill last time and had a look round a few music shops.

Ladbrook Grove

is the nearest tube - its the Westway end of Portobello Road so will save you a long walk from the Notting Hill end.

Oh forgot in Camden - 'Out On the Floor' in Inverness Street has three small shops in one and some real nice bits

Dada in Chiswick

is excellent - Fopp reignited. Excellent pricing, range and vibe. Turnham Green tube station.

Seconded

I've only been once but I spent quite a lot of money there compared to visits I normally make to stores selling music these days.

Not sure if by Soho

you're including Hanway Street W1 (between Oxford St and Tott Ct Rd - behind the old Zavvi megastore) - but that has a couple of good little purveyors of vinyl - whose names for the life of me I can't remember - but it's only a tiny street so you'll find them.

On The Beat

The longest-standing record shop on Hanway Street. Must have been there a good 30 years. I've been in there countless times and never, as far as I can remember, bought a record there. But a good place to kill time until Bradley's Bar opens.

The slimmed-down Ray's Jazz in Foyles bookshop...

on Charing Cross Road is good for your jazzer needs if you should have any.

They may have a slap bass section but I'm not absolutely certain...

Slap happy

Always up for some jazz, but to discover a slap bass section would be the icing on the cake!

Bj's

is the other place in hanway st. Which is friendly and well laid out. Sdaly on the whole alot of records shops are shutting even in central London. Remember Fopps still going just up from cambridge circus towards seven dials.
If the cricket is at oval hedgehog records in camberwell is only 5 mins on the bus you could go at "lunch". Make sure you hold up any vinyl to the camera so we he can hear Boycott and Aggers discussing your lastest buys.

Where is hedgehog records in Camberwell?

I'd love to know about a records shop not far away from me.

In soho there are still a few on Berwick street worth your time (Sister Ray, Revival (good 2nd hand stuff), Record & Tape Exchange and the one next to it whose name escapes me), along with the excellent Sounds of the Universe on Broadwick Street. Phonica on Poland Street and Blackmarket are for dance music only.

Puregroove in Smithfields is more of a bar these days but still worth a look if you're in the area and has great lunchtime and evening instores.

Check Rough Trade's website for instores too - they have loads, especially in the Brick Lane branch. Duckworth Lewis method this evening.

at camberwell green the road that goes down to oval (on the southside of the road) about 3-6 shops along from the corner. I haven't been for 1-2 years but use to be good.
